Canon 90D - Neutral Picture Style VS Cinestyle

In this video I try the Neutral default picture style and compare it to Technicolor Cinestyle. I didn't find much difference...just some more contrast in the Neutral...

Hi Dan, I use the Cinestyle for grading but i also like the neutral setting in camera; Either way it,s personal preference for me but both of your footage clips looked cool in both settings, I tend to go with neutral now because of the ease of use and generally try to avoid grading as im not a pro grader like yourself but im happy to make do and still have reasonably clean footage, Great video Dan and as usual keep up the great work as you have so many videos now...WOW...

I never liked Cinestyle... I do have it in my 90d but Neutral looks best for me... I can pull the color according to my liking... and for Cinestyle... it never brings that color that I want... it becomes noisy when I pull that color according to my liking... it can pull so much of color till the footage gets unusable.

I was actually really surprised when I color graded the Neutral parts...to achieve the same result with Cinestyle (without losing the skin tones) I had to work twice as hard.

@@DanFrullani excatly... the only problem neutral (with low contrast) is like you said... cant pull out the shadow details... but if you go with cinestyle you can do that but unfortunately you will loose the quality of the entire footage... cinestyle can never be a true clog... its just a setting to make you feel comfortable I guess :D ... for youtube vlogs it might be ok but for filmmaking I would suggest to go with neutral color with low contrast... and Dan can you create a video to show how to get a proper film look and not that "teal and orange" look... i hate that teal and orange look :D

I totally agree! and yes!! I can make a video about color grading without that teal and orange (that most of the times we see in bad tv shows)...it's not something we can achieve just with a loot...to look cinematic...legit...there's more work to be done and most of all...it's not just about teal and orange! :-)

@@DanFrullani oh thank you Dan... please make one and if possible please include how you did the color grading too... and for teal and orange I hate that color grading because I see videos with a filmmaking eye... sooooooo... hope you understand how our eyes work with the color chemistry :D ... I would go for blue, orange and natural white color as its practical and true color which we see everyday... will wait for that episode :)

I wouldn't do that: shooting using default picture styles implies shooting in jpg...I don't shoot jpg for professional shootings I shoot RAW...actually even for my personal photos I never use jpg..

Interesting topic. I'm new to photography and would like to purchase a few LUTs from different sellers. I'm told that shooting in Cinestyle allows for the LUT to reach its full potential when applied. Is it possible to reduce all of the picture style settings and arrive at a cinestyle in camera? How does cinestyle achieve such a flat picture profile? I'm having great difficulty downloading cinestyle and getting it on my camera. Thanks.

Ciao Dan! Question for you == I have just switched from Sony to Canon and got a Canon EOS 90D because in my opinion is really good and affordable. Now, I downloaded the Cynestile which is quite consistent with my old S-Log2 in Sony not that much but almost there. My question for you is: are you using any LUT's in the video demos or just color grading? I am using the included LUT with Cinestyle but....mmmm...it's not really what I am looking for. Do you have any suggestions?

I never use LUTs, unless I have to make a video where I show how to apply them etc. My advice, if you have time try to look for dedicated tutorials or specific LUTs that might make your life easier like some teal and orange etc (I made a few videos about LUTs)....alternatively, when you work the footage in post, in the software(Resolve, Final Cut, Premiere Pro etc) just play around with the settings as much as you can...and you'll figure it out.

Hello and thanks for your video, what are the settings of your neutral profile? Because i need to shoot a low light scene un studio with studio lights but I AM worried about noise in the shadows I Will use an ISO of 400 so i cannot decide which one Will ve better neutral or cinestyle

If you use neutral you may want to adjust the settings as I show in this video, reducing the contrast a lot, so that the shadows won't look totally black straight out of camera. In my experience for what concerns the ISO you'll be fine until ISO 1000. If you have to choose between neutral and cinestyle....it depends...with the neutral you can easily get to some good results in terms of colors....with cinestyle you can make it look a little better (or the same) but it takes some extra time depending on you experience coloring this profile. My advice...if the scene is dark...don't try to make it look brighter...for best results just embrace the darkness and there won't be any noticeable digital noise.
