I just started following you on Instagram. I was hoping to see your camera settings for the pictures you take? My husband bought me a new 90D for my birthday & I will have it next week. We live in the country on 5 acres with lots of tree's & have just recently had a Peacock move in, don't know where he came from & he's quite skittish. I can't get very close to him and I'm hoping to get some good pictures of him. I don't know if I will ever have a zoom lens like you use, so I'm sure I won't be able to get the amazing photos that you get. I ordered a Canon EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM Lens. I'm going to use the settings you shared in this video, so hopefully I will get some good pictures. We also have owls, vultures, rabbits & a multitude of other birds that live in our treelines. Thank you for all of the great & concise information!

Here I sit, watching your first-class video, while reflecting on the fact that somebody much younger than me can teach me something new. THANK YOU!!! The way you demonstrate and explain things is striking the famous chord in me. I have just changed from a Sony alpha to the superb EOS 90D and got a bit lost with the controls as they are ever so different. In fact, the 90D is an entirely different beast and demands a much deeper understanding of its handling. Hence, with your help, an array of lightbulbs began flashing when watching your video and admiring those stunning wildlife-stills. Again, many thanks, I bow my head in respect to you.

Hi Tomas, It is great to watch Your video. Good information. I am a wildlife enthusiast and I shoot a lot of wildlife, specially bird flight, pictures using my Canon 7D Mark II. I know it is good to shoot in the Manual mode, as You have suggested. But I mainly shoot in the AV ( Aperture Priority ) mode and get tack sharp images. The point I would like to make is that You can set the minimum shutter speed of the camera to whatever You want for any of the creative modes, so that the camera does not go below that shutter speed, for any of the creative modes. For example, I set my minimum camera speed to 1/1600 of a second for birds flight and set the ISO to AUTO in the AV mode. Then I adjust the Aperture as per the depth of field that I need for every shot, in the AV mode. I set the exposure compensation to +1/3 stop. In this way, any picture You take will not be shot below 1/1600 of a second and the ISO is automatically calculated and set by the camera as per the exposure compensation. -- Sorry for this long message.

I’m planning to purchase that exact setup. The 90D has great specs, and I like the versatility of the 100-400mm zoom. Also, I’m happy to see that such a skilled photographer (like yourself) pretty much uses the same settings I use. I’ve read many sources that insist on using shutter priority with flying birds. From my experience, if there is any sky or water in the frame, there’s always a chance the camera will grab the light reading from it and underexpose my bird by closing down the aperture. I like to make ALL the decisions. And contrary to what those articles say, I’ve never found myself in light conditions that change too rapidly for me to keep up with them. A couple clicks up or down…. no big deal! Love your videos, man!

Thank you for this video. I wrote it down and downloaded it for later reference. Can you go over how to shoot in a foggy/ overcast days with the 90d? It's early spring here in Duluth, MN. Could you perhaps focus on a wildlife seasons video series? Labeled correctly- foggy rain, early spring, spring, full sun,sun partial clouds, fall colors with/without sun, first snow fall, and lastly middle of the arctic tundra-err full winter. A lot to do think about understandable. It would take over a year to complete, but would be easier to follow for many. Now and for many years to come. Videos are the new books learning tools for the next generations to come (in my opinion). It would be a great series to learn from . Please use the 90d if you choose to 😁. Thank you again.

Great video. I'm in the Pros and Cons stage of comparing buying a new 90d vs used 7D mkii. Pros for 90d = 5y warranty, flip screen, lighter, more battery life, 4k video. Actually the more I type I am convincing myself that 90d is the way to go. Peace of mind of having warranty is always good. How weather sealed is the 90d in practical terms, because I know the 7D mkii is a beast in this area as well as in Autofocus, with preconfigured settings for AF scenarios for wildlife/sports.

Great video. Everything in it is applicable to the 80D as well. I would like to respond to your comment that Tv (shutter priority) is worse for wildlife than Av (Aperture priority). I agree that Manual mode/aperture wide open/auto ISO is the best way to go but I've used shutter priority for years with excellent results. You say "if I set the shutter speed way way low...." Well you would never do that in wildlife photography.... ever.... you wouldn't do that in manual mode either. You like to have control of the shutter speed in manual for the same reason I like to have control of it in shutter priority. Motionless subjects ~1/400 minimum but as high as light will allow. 1/1000 preferred especially if any movement possible. 1/2000 or up for birds in flight. I always keep my shutter speed as high as possible so that my ISO doesn't go above 1600, that means my aperture is almost always wide open. The benefit of Tv mode is if you happen to lower the shutter speed below the point where the ISO reaches 100, the aperture will stop down and expose the picture perfectly. If you do that in manual (without stopping down the aperture) you will blow out your highlights. But I have been experimenting with manual/wide open/auto ISO and think that it is a great choice.... awesome video.

Hi. I'm only 3 years into my photography journey and 1 month into wildlife. I've already been using auto ISO in manual on my 760D T6s. I'm finding a big issue is not having exposure compensation in manual on the T6s as black birds are under exposed and white parts of birds or white birds have parts blown out I cannot recover in the raw file. Do you know a way around this. I cannot set minimum shutter speed in AV mode like the 7Dii. Any hacks you know off? Magic lantern do not have a version for 760D. I just purchased a 150-600 so that's my budget gone for the year. Also, is a 90D still the best option since you posted. There is now the R7 to consider. I guess the used prices of the 90D will come down. I've seen comments about issues with the sigma 150-600 with R7. Appreciate any advice you can give, even if that's to get my wallet out and upgrade. Though I'd rather not.
