I was thinking about getting this c100. I own exact Canon in Canon g30 camcorder. Atomos hooked in and wifi is same, the only thing this has is clog and lenses interchange. My lens is fixed with 1.2 wide apt. Lens 20x zoom but zoom is great. Full control of exposure. Added a 7 inch desview r7p monitor 1000nit just for wav form option and pinch zoom. I have 3 Canon lenses and 4k is a gimmick.

Thanks Caleb for taking the time to help out a fellow videographer. When it comes to videocameras, there's so much buzz ie 4k, ultra slow mo etc that is hard to put things in perspective. +verybloom Fantastic. It is a steal right now in my opinion with the $1,000 instant rebate, bringing it down to $4,500. Good idea for a shotgun mic tutorial too. The main thing is to have a shock mount for the shotgun mic, a short, 1 foot-ish XLR cable, and plug in right into the camera. Hope that helps!

After watching this video, I have decided to go with the EOS 100 MK ii. I am wondering though, for a decent lens, It will come with an EF 24-105mm. For filming inside breweries and street interviews, would you stick with just that lens or recommend anything different? I see there are a few lens's out there for this camera, IE 24mm, 50mm, 85mm prime lens as well as the EF 16-35mm, EF 24-70mm and EF 70-200mm. Im just wondering if the stock EF 24-105mm will be good.
@CalebWojcik2 жыл бұрын
24-105 is solid. I used that 80% of the time when this was my main camera. Pick up the cheap 10-18mm EF-S lens for ultrawides and you'll be able to capture pretty much anything.
@lb7144 Жыл бұрын
I also have the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 and it is amazing. I also picked up the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 which is excellent on the C-100 MKII. This is a faster lens and let’s in more light in dark conditions. If you are on a tripod filming an interview or a gimbal, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 rocks. It’s autofocus is noisy so you’ll want a boom mic with it.

Even in 2020 I still use this cinema camcorder! If you want to work quickly, with a crew or solo it only informs you more about making a scene or shooting a movie, it's the Swiss army knife camcorder, great quality and colour, makes you think creatively and effectively, it's got small file sizes and picture able to satisfy any client, not many desire or view at 2k let alone 4k++...Battery that lasts all day....cheap media that runs for hours, looks the part...It's the best budget film makers camcorder in my view and that's why I got one.

Hey Caleb. Great review. Your vid is still very relevant in 2019, as the C100 MkII still seems to be holding its own. Although discounted from years ago, the body is still going for $3,500, which is no small piece of change.. And while there are less expensive, more capable offerings, the $64,000 question is this: if you didn't need 4k workflow, would you still buy the Mark II today?
@CalebWojcik5 жыл бұрын
If I NEEDED 4K, the answer would have to be no, because it doesn't record in 4K. Although, the sensor is 4K downscaling to 1080p so for plenty of videos I have upscaled on export to 4K and I think it looks better than a lot of cameras that record in 4K on a tiny sensor.
@dh11635 жыл бұрын
@@CalebWojcik So, the answer is actually, YES, given you don't necessarily need to work in 4K. Personally, I love the camera. Another quick question: If you were going to go 4K, which camera would you lean toward? Would you stick with Canon?

Two questions Caleb please 1. The camera featured in your Amazon affiliate link for the Canon EOS C100 Mark II is NOT actually the Mark II or is it? 2. The other thing I am confused about is that you mentioned the two pixel autofocus upgrade? Is that an upgrade I have to buy in addition to the Canon EOS C100 Mark II or, are you saying that this upgrade is included in the Mark II but not in the Mark I? Thanks you for your help…..
@CalebWojcik8 жыл бұрын
1. Good catch, looks like that page must have updated or something. Just fixed the link. 2. The dual pixel autofocus comes as a default with the c100 Mark II, on the Mark I they have versions with and without DPAF, so you have to make sure to check on that when you're buying one. Hope that helps!

This looks like a great camera for my needs and budget. But I feel that the A7s can give me more bang for the buck. It has Slog2 and 422 on the HDMI, and if I want to go 4k I could buy an Atomos down the road. Not to mention the low light. Do you think these cameras are comparable in any way?
@CalebWojcik8 жыл бұрын
I'd say yes, you can get a better image quality with an a7 series camera and the proper accessories for recording 422 in 4K. And as I am most likely switching Sony, I completely see your point. Depending on what kind of filming you do though, the ergonomics of this camera and all of the physical buttons/features it has is great. So is an FS5.

Do you fill it is a really big issue having the 1.5x crop in the C100 compared to the fullframe sensor on the mkIII for filming? I am jumping from 70D/700D to C100 or maybe MKiii, but I honestly find to be a bit troublesome when you can't get a real wide view due to the crop. By the way, nice review, your channel deserve much more than just 4.7k subscribers :)

+Nicholas Rodriguez It has been annoying for a while, even with having a 20mm or a 24mm, but I just picked up the 10-18mm EF-S and it is wider than I ever need. And it is cheap too. Also, if you're coming from the 70D, it has basically the same crop factor that you're used too.

@Backstagesonoma7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great review. I've had the c-100 MKII for a week now, and the video was helpful. I'm disappointed, like you, that Canon didn't add more lenses that offer face recognition. I heard back from a Canon tech rep today who said, "To my knowledge there are no plans to incorporate the remainder of Canon's lenses into that particular feature, as STM is needed for that to occur. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you." It's a shame because the 80D does without any problem, AND it has a touch screen so you can rapidly point to the object you want the lens to focus - the 80D is also about a quarter of the price too. I do documentaries where subjects being interviewed often use hand gestures or move their heads/bodies... so it sounds like I need to invest in one of the STM lenses. You mentioned in the video that you were planning on adding another STM lens. Do you have a recommendation lens for interviews? I'm leaning toward the 18-135mm.
@CalebWojcik7 жыл бұрын
+Steven Roby Yeah, and the 70D does it too with any lens. Inconsistency between Canon camera features is a major annoyance. Especially when dropping $5,500 on a camera as I did to see $1,000 cameras of theirs do video features, like face autofocus, better. As for what lens, the only STM one I have is the 10-18mm. Not the best quality out there and can't get super shallow, but function or beauty is needed sometimes. I think the 18-55 goes shallower than the 18-135.
@Backstagesonoma7 жыл бұрын
Canon is notorius for dropping prices too. I bought a 5D III a few years ago, and after the holidays they lowered the price. The same has happened with this camera.I'm not wild about the tiny audio wheels on the handel... and on they're on the side too! It's a pleasure though not to worry about a DSLR splitting the video filesor limiting the time you can continously shoot.
@98JamesNixon4 жыл бұрын
A C100 MK3 with 4K 8 bit & or 10 bit would be perfect for me. We shoot all our interviews in 4K so we can crop in and out to help hide cuts and make it more interesting so it has become a necessity for us really for single camera interviews

Caleb- I have my C100mk2 for a week or so. I can not for the life of me understand if my camera is defective or not. I have noise even in 850 in well lit environments, indoors and out. I have tried over 20 plus profiles and tweaked some of my own. Any advise besides sending it back for another one? Also, what camera did u use for this video and what settings? and CP used? and what codec did you use to upload to YT. Thanks. -John
@CalebWojcik8 жыл бұрын
+John Massaria The first thing I would do is black balance your camera. (ABB in the menus.) Turn your camera on and put it in the ISO setting you shoot at normally (850 for me) and wait 10 minutes. Then with the body cap on, run the ABB. That helps a lot. I tend to see noise mostly in underexposed areas too, so filming in wide DR or Canon's cinema log helps with that a bit. Or overexpose a little bit then drop the black/shadow levels in post to almost crushed. Hope that helps! I just learned these things a few months ago and it helped improve the quality of the image a lot.

just my idea C100 MKii is cheaper and 4k is not main stream yet 5D MK iv when 4k the censor is crop and the codec is pretty bad...
@Photographicelements7 жыл бұрын
the c100, hands down, produces video quality far beyond the 5D mark 2,3,4. to get a 5D to attempt to get similar results (but still not close), you need giant rigging, with many accessories, which defeats the whole purpose of filming with a dslr. the 5d mark iv 4k recording records a small codec at a low bit rate AND it's motion jpeg, not h264, so file sizes are ginormous. there's no advantages of 5d over c100 mark1 or 2. now gh5 vs c100ii, is a quite a different conversation. also consider blackmagic micro cinema camera for raw footage or a7sii (but consider the a7sii's drawbacks).

Gonna end up shooting a lot of weddings and live stuff in the near future, so a solid run n gun camera and quick turnaround is gonna be a must. I'm basically sold on this one. For 5k, it comes with a 24-105 on B&H. Buuuuut then theres the fs5 for a bit more but then once I have an equivalent zoom I'm looking at >6k (i have mostly primes but they're not ideal for events) which is really pushing my budget. Granted i probably wouldn't be using many of the other features (4k) but it would be slightly more future proof. So, should I grab the C100mkii for its color and versatility now or wait a few more months (and potentially miss out on more gigs) to wait for the fs5? I personally like the image of the c100 more than the fs5, but I also don't want to miss out on gigs because I don't have that 4k bullet point on my list of stuff when clients ask for a gear list.
@CalebWojcik8 жыл бұрын
If you're really worried about 4K than go FS5. No one needs 4K for events/weddings right now. Pretty much no one can playback in 4K anyway. You could always rent something if you need more than what the c100 mk ii has to offer. I think it is one of the best cameras on the market.

hey question. you shot yourself using the canon c100 mark 2? super quality.. please confirm, i can't believe how clear everything is. I don't shot on this but I can't get close to this sharpness and detail with my GH3 lol but I am wondering if it's because the lack of dynamic range or my rendering settings! could you chime in. Subscribed btw, you're great.
@CalebWojcik8 жыл бұрын
+YO Q Yes, the talking head pieces of this were filmed on the C100 mk ii. The shots of the camera were filmed on a 5D mk iii. The "sharpness" of this camera comes from the fact that it is downsampling a 4k sensor to 1080p. That's the biggest factor. No extra sharpness or rendering is added.
@YOQishere6 жыл бұрын
man since i posted this message 2 years ago. I been through 2x c100 mark 1 and GH4 and GH5 sold them all for reason out of my control. Had an opportunity to get a gh5s but nope late 2018 today! I decided to get the c100 mark 2 brand new, yes it was costly but for what I want to use it for. it's worth it. I just missed the workflow and feeling, glad to see you are still a fan, even though there are "better options" for cheaper argument. This gets the job done for what I do.

I'm actually fine using DSLRs/Cinema cameras. It's just the price that makes it very difficult. Plus I don't have a lot of lenses to buy just to use this. It's a great cinema camera don't get me wrong, but I just think The XA30 is still consider my favorite Canon Camcorder despite the backlash on the quality.

Yeah, an XA30 is easier to use in general, I just don't ever feel like the footage is very cinematic and I want interchangeable lenses.

Solid review, thanks. Your saying "low light isn't the greatest". Most of the C100 II reviews out there reporting different experiences, just the opposite findings to yours. I've seen clips from the C100 II at ISO 102.400 with acceptable/usable noise. Which could be expected as the sensor has a pixel size of 6.4 micron, which is quite big.
@CalebWojcik8 жыл бұрын
+Wolfgang Ernst It depends on your expectations I guess. There is a lot of noise in the shadows even at the base ISO of 850. Usable, but no where need as clean as other cameras out there at base ISO. At high ISO I think it performs better than most though. I should have been more specific in the review. :)
@wolfgangernst13368 жыл бұрын
thanks, Caleb, yes my expectations are high, especially on the low light side of the C100 II. If ISO 850 is "usable" only I wouldn't consider this cam at all. So far I've been renting the C100 II twice for daylight operation only, I found no issues at ISO 200 - 400 (of course not). The whole camera concept fits well in my on-man-band production scheme. Please have a look on this Video: youtubePOINTcom (followed by) "/watch?v=DuVT9MJrBvM"What do you think? Is there any trick? Is ISO 102400 a fake? I'm more than confused, because I trust your solid review findings.
@CalebWojcik8 жыл бұрын
+Wolfgang Ernst using a low ISO like 200 will give you less noise in the shadows on the c100 ii because it gives you more latitude and dynamic range into the shadows. Whereas 850 and up are optimized to get you more latitude into saving the highlights from being blown out. By usable I mean it is solid and good. You're not going to get a noiseless image without a bigger sensor or more pixels packed in there.

Hello! We are wedding videographers and do a 3 camera shoot at the ceremony. We usually go two monopods up near bride and groom and one wide camera in the back. We also deal with a lot of low light or no light at all during the reception, relying on our LED lights on top of our cameras. Does anyone recommend either C100 mark 2 or Cannon 50d Mark 4?? Thanks!

I liked your review alot I have a bmpc 4k with accessories that also comes witht he orignial boxing and everything in itI spent at least $2,500 parts for this camera and thinking about selling everything for $4,000. I just can't seem to get jiggy with it. Should I keep it or and just buy a new camera or sell it and buy a new camera (perfer the a7sii or this camera even though it doesn't have the 4k feature). What concerns me about this camera is the blackhole affect when open wide when filming in the night or if a light is too bright for example the sun will appear with a blackhole. I recently filmed a scene with a car pulling off at night and all you see is these lights with blackholes throughout a roll of cars. I think ?I need bigger and better lighting to get this camera to expose but I don't think I have the time nor the extra money to spend on doing so anymore. Also I have to build powerful P.C. or buy a late IMac 5k or Mac pro just to get this thing going. I shoot in 1080 a lot however, I all the my clients is asking me to film in 4k since the bug is out there. what should I do? P.S. sorry for the rant lol

Hi Caleb, have any sense to buy a Canon C100 Mark II in 2017? I'm tired of using dsrl's for video, but I'm afraid the C100's could be old technology and Canon may launches a new model with 4K this year. As I usually use it for live events, I do not really need 4K, but I do not want to lose money investing in old equipment. Thanks!

Thanks Caleb, I think it's a good idea, only that I will travel in March to USA and I wanted to take the opportunity. if I understand correctly during my research, nearly none of my EF Canon lenses (most of them L glass) will operate in face detection, only standard AF? Nearly everybody is waiting for a major upgrade of the C100 in NAB, but I am currently more tempted by 1-inch cameras like the Sony NX100

Caleb, that's a wonderful review - quite tolerant and unbiased. I see you've spend some time to put things together. I do get tired from Canon-haters and would have been perfectly fine with downscaled 4k to 1080p, and think that would be enough "protection" for canon higher C Lines BUT couldn't cope with next things: - 8 Bit color. It's ridiculous. I understand that they are not putting it in Dslr to protect C-line, but why do C100 is crippled with absence of at least 10 bit 422 internal and 12 4444 external? "Cinema 8 bit Cmon, haven't really seen yet any clip with really cinematic grade from c100. What I'm seing is DSLR on steroids. Keying with 8bit is also not really easy. - 60 fps. Huge Bummer. 120 internal and 180\240 external is absolutely doable in 1080p. - No Clog 2 and Clog 3. If C300 is 4k and have it, C100 is downsampled 4K could have it. DR is really far from what you can pull out of FS5 or even A7s - New "richier" MXF codec, that is in XC and ProRES - Price in 2016 with all features mentioned above should be around 3-3,5K I think that would be ultimate "cinema" 1080p camera and implementing mentioned above features didn't really need any major hardware upgrade (aside at least one CF (not Cfast) or UHS-II slot) and probably better digic 5 prossesor (which is in 2K XC-series 1'' camcoder) Seriously considered it but went different direction. Colors is good (i woudn't fell on knees and shouting about "CANON COLOR SCIENCE") But it's definitely better that Sony. Due to 10 and 12 Bit, BM gives a home run to c100 though. Ergonomics is great. Reliability and service is miles ahead of sony and BM. And their lenses are great too. Off course Global shutter is a welcome feature but i understand that canon doesn't have technology at this price point currently. So I'm really gutted that I'ts just a bit of software work needed to deliver cinematic quality pictures and slo-mo. You review is very comprehensive though. Would love to see more.

I see a lot of you are torn because of the 4k not being an option. I have a question for you all, what are the broadcasting standards? If it's 4k, then yeah, I think we all should aim for 4k but 4k work spaces are still new and developing. Remember when the 24p came out? Anyway, as a filmmaker, the goal is to get my projects on online distribution platforms and broadcast television. Therefore, we all should be shooting in or close to it. If the television hasn't then should we? Thoughts...
