Nice review, Joseph. Thanks for taking the time to share. Best of luck going forward.

This was honestly really comprehensive and informative. I think the title sums it up perfectly, but if your commentary and b-roll are anything to go by, this camera overall definitely seems to provide an appreciable amount of versatility you can apply to many of your projects.

Great review! Going in circles with what a camera I should pair my c70 with. It’s always the c500 I flirt with or possibly waiting on the c200 mark II (if it ever comes out) Btw your footage is awesome- well done!

Great review. You were spot on about the ergonomics. We own the C200 & C70. I prefer the C70 image but I hate shooting handheld with the C70. Looking forward to a new RF Mount cinema camera with the more traditional form factor like the C200.

This was a thoughtful review of the camera from someone who obviously knows what they are talking about and uses the camera in different projects. And I agree the image quality from this camera is amazing!

Thanks for making this. I own a C70 + R5C, but am always tempted by C500M2. Beautiful footage, btw. Just subbed.

Thanks for the thoughtful video! It reminded me of lots of advantages of the C70 over the C500 ii! Like you said, the C70 is probably the better camera for most people... So, some advantages of C70 over C500 that your video touches on might include: -- cost ($6,500 vs $11,000, not including the difference in media cost, etc) -- battery life (200 minutes vs 45 minutes) -- 4Kp120 (big advantage for many people) -- audio controls in a better position -- raw much friendlier (128gb = 60 minutes on C70 vs 7 minutes on C500) -- for some people -- maybe those people who don't do handheld shooting -- the lighter weight and the more compact form factor of the C70 is an advantage! Interestingly, though the Canon marketing emphasises the dynamic range from this dual gain sensor on the C70 and C300 iii, CineD says the C70 has 12.3 stops and the C500 ii has 13.1 stops. So, the C500 wins there. It also wins in terms of colour depth (I think it's 14 bit in raw on the C500 vs 12 bit on C70).

C300mkiii, C70, and c500 all shoot 12bit RAW (no 14 bit). C300mkiii has 12.8 stops of dr with a signal to noise ratio of 2 (including the C70). To achieve 12.8 dr on the C70 you need to use the least compressed codecs via canon raw lite or xavc. The C500 mkii has a dr of 13.1 with a signal to noise ratio of 2. According to cine d. Canons current cine line up of cameras (c300 mkii, c70, c500 mkii) are grossly underrated in my opinion.

Canon has yo, and I mean HAS to, implemented dual native ISO. I'm currently a C200 owner, the lack of 10-bit CLog 2 is a major head ache. Happy for you though, your footage looks great!

I own both the C200 and C70 and I agree the C500 has the best ergos in comparison. The screen feels very cheap. Everything else was perfect. I can’t wait for the C500 Ii to get a little cheaper used and I’ll consider it in the next year.

Great review, I have definitely thought about this camera. The issue with CineD's rating is that it was for the 10 bit codec which is likely doing noise reduction. In comparison CineD did a rating for the C70 in raw getting 12.3 stops and in 10 bit 12.8. But all in all I think dynamic range can be a tad overrated.
@JosephMorris_ Жыл бұрын
Agreed, numbers themselves aren’t always everything. The Mini LF’s 13.5 rating was with ProRes not raw. It’s admittedly probably doing less noise reduction than the c500 but I’d like to see a rating for the C500’s raw codec

Great review. I feel like the C500ii is a tough sell in 2023 for a solo op. I used to rent one to shoot alongside my C70 for some jobs.. but stopped doing that when I got my R5C. In terms of what you get out of it.. unless you need SDI for larger productions.. it really feels like you're paying an extra $10K just for ergos over something like a C70 with the speedbooster.. and that's tough. Still.. I get it. It's easy to get caught up in the whole comparison game and lose the idea of just using and appreciating the gear for what it is. If you purchase and use a C500.. it's incredible. Full stop. Nobody uses a camera, and spends the whole time thinking about some other camera, you know? You use the camera, experience that camera, produce work with that camera.. and that's it. And when you look at the C500 experience like that.. yeah.. it's amazing. And that's what actually matters.

Solid points man. Ergonomics of the c200 are what made me love it and it was just too difficult to give that up. I ran the pocket 4K for about a year and the rigging process for that camera was awful and I was not looking to go back to that with a c70 setup. I’ll be curious to see what the C200mk2 ends up being. Same sensor and codecs as c300iii/c70 but different form factor.

I think, ultimately, it comes down to personal taste. I think the Canon C500 MK II shoots great images, but I think it's rather overpriced for what it is. I agree with what you're saying about the Super 35 image and shooting in that format. With those ideas in mind, I have to say the Black Magic Design 6K Pro (Both Full Frame and the older Super 35 sensor version) yield an image superior to the C500 MK II, and the 6K pro yields an image (Even in ProRes) which looks better to my eye than the C500 MK II at half the price. The RED Komodo is a giant step forward with its 16 Bit RAW RedCode RAW codec, and it's a difference you can plainly see when comparing it to the 12 Bit RAW of the Pocket 6K and the C500 MK II (But definitely NOT the URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF with its Super 35 RGB processing sensor). The URSA 12K yields flesh tones unbeatable to anything out there (Including the Komodo).

Have you used the C200 as a B camera and if so, did they match?
@JosephMorris_2 жыл бұрын
I sold the camera shortly after picking the c500 up so never had the chance to. When I rented it however I did some side by side tests. In RAW on both, The c500 is a little greener than the c200 at the same white balance and tint. Which was surprising, bc the c500 already leans magenta on its own. But some minor wb/tint adjustments on both puts them in the same ballpark.

@@JosephMorris_ Cool thanks, I decided to keep my C200 when I bought the C500 but I haven't shot them as an A B setup yet.
