Canon C70 - Change These Settings Before Shooting!

Thanks good video One thing to note, as far as I can tell is when you use MP4 vs XF-AVC is you only have 2 audio channels. When I shoot doco and am doing my own sound I use Ch1 for shotgun mic and 3&4 for the radio mic so usually use XF… I split the channels and have a high and low setting incase of peaks and lows.

I have the same issue with the MP4 audio channels. That said, it appears Damien has all 4 audio channels in this video when using MP4. Anyone know the secret here?

@@gb4639 Yep, you can enable 4 channel audio in H.265 MP4, the only difference is it is 16bit audio instead of 24bit in XF-AVC (but both 48khz). In order to get 4CH audio in H.265, you have change "Main Audio Format" (the last item in the codec setting window) from AAC 2CH to LPCM 4CH.

Pretty close to what I have for my settings, although I rarely use peaking in camera, since my ext monitor has better focus assist features. I will say, I have found, with canon specifically, if you are shooting in any of the CLOG profiles, you will get alot less noise/grain when you set your ISO to full stops rather than the 1/3 increments. For example, 1600 is cleaner than 1000 and 1250. And it is the same every stop you go up. Just something to keep in mind! Great info in this video!

@@seanhanley6465 Can't recall what video I found that talked about it, but after I saw it, I did some tests on my own, in a low light space, and it was definitely noticeable. I was surprised to see the results, but it seems as tho there is some sort of internal denoising happening at those settings. Whatever the case may be, based on my tests, it is true.

yeah, the peaking isn't great but I also can't stand to look at a screen where the focus assist also applies to the entire OSD. So I stuck with the internal one. As for the noise: I always had a feeling that this might be true. But I actually like the noise of the Canon sensor so it never bothered me. Shooting a project with the R5C the other da, I did notice A LOT more grain though

@@damiencooper yea, I did notice that the noise was worse in my R5 and R7 when I was testing. I'm guessing that is due to the DGO sensor in the C70. I rarely have noise issues with that one.

When using the MP4 setting I cant use all the options in the audio input selection, have you changed to xavc for Those occasions?

@@faithandfailures i believe you don’t have all audio options in all codecs. You need to be in xfavc to get 4 channels for example

I’ve been playing around with the HEVC MP4 and it does seem to playback smoother plus smaller files which is great. Even the 420 seems pretty good for most situations. I just wish you could use custom file names

What would you recommend in the case where an external monitor is desired but does not offer any of the "modern" color adjustments other than RGB and brightness (or any of the other fancy features either, to be honest)? How would you recommend color matching that to the LCD?

Is there way to monitor clog 2 on c70 screen without using external monitor with latest update ? really appreciated

Hey, fantastic rundown. I just got my C70, all rigged up and wanted to get through the initial settings. I've been using a Canon C100MKII so fairly similar. I noticed a few things not showing up and not sure what setting they are tied to, like my channels 3 & 4, I couldn't navigate to in settings and at some points, it said my SD card was no compatible. And my Iris mode top setting was grayed out as well. I'm in US and switched to the 59Hz. Appreciate any insights.

My understanding is the SD Card isn’t fast enough if you get that warning. I was getting it and then bought a faster card and it went away.

Hi Damien, how do you set the slow shutter below 1/15 sec? I choose "slow" in "shutter mode" but I can't go below 1/15. I can only increase to 1/30.

I just put an Atomos ninja V on top of one of my C70-s and realized that the HDMI out doesent put the lut on when playing back in C-log 2 :D great!! so to show the client a clip i still need to take off the V-mount.. flip out the screen and put the V-mount back again :P Canon have not made this camera easy to use with a monitor.

How is this dinosaur camera better then a Sony FX3... I don't see any pros to having this monster unless ur being paid by Canon to advertise them to new camera buyers... If you can show a side by side comparison of Sony v Canon colours then you might twist my arm but I'm yet to see a sample from Sony that doesn't look "Sony". The new Firmware update has improved the AF no end.
