Actually, I'm not that sure that a Xeen Cine Prime is better than a Sigma ART. Don't forget that Sigma's Cine Lenses are based on the ART series and is basically the same glass. (and I am a HUGE Xeen fan by the way) Just saying.

The Sony vs Canon debate has been going on for over 20 years now. One used to be strictly video and the other was strictly stills before that. Put your energy into your skills and your work will improve 10 times faster than it would if you just concentrated on gear. I learned this about about 20 years ago.

I would love to see how you rig your C70 for interviews and run and gun. How are you mounting your Sennheiser Lav mics? I love my Sennheisers on my c100 because they xlr plugs right into it. How do you like mount your receiver to the C70 since you have to have a mini xlr cable with those mics?

I hate videos that end by saying "it all comes down to what you like!!" BUT I will give you major props for owning a C70 and giving the FX6 its due - many times. Most people would let their own purchase bias cloud their judgment, but you kept it real and I appreciated that. Would have liked to see a bit more of the post process (did each camera's files ply back smoothly? How difficult/easy was it to grade?), and I'd also love to see a little more of the autofocus tracking in well lit situations rather than one shot where the Canon just failed. That said, I know there is a lot to cover in these things and you were fun to watch. Good job.

Great vid. I am a Canon user and recently sold all of my EF glass and went all-in to the RF system. I have had my sales guys at my camera store trying to convince me to switch ecosystems. I love Canon for photo enough to tolerate their issues with video...until the C500 and C300, and now the C70. I am a "hybrid" shooter meaning I do a lot of photo and video, but never at the same time. So I went with the R5 and 3 RF lenses and I've never looked back. Now I am looking at the C70 and it is perfect for what I am looking for and Brandon has helped a lot with his perspective. I don't do a ton of low-light shoots as I light my subjects, but the workflow is great. Was the FX6 better? In some respects, but in reality, not so much to think I am on the wrong side of technology. Thanks for the great video Brandon! I look forward to the next one!

Great eye-opening comparison for me as a canon user. The C70 has a big flaw I think and that is the lack of SDI. In reality you often end up in situations where you need a bigger or remote monitor or a recorder for ProRes files and hdmi is just not reliable in the field. Sony is approaching Canon in AF and color, and is less busy with the competition with its own camera lineup. On top of it, their variable ND is just amazing. It looks to me as if Canons marketing department has a too big part in the design. Now that Sony is getting better I will have a closer look at their products again. The Variable ND isn't exactly new, it's been around since the Fs7 MKII (perhaps earlier) but it WILL change your life.

I’m biased to Canon but I know Sony is great. What you didn’t mention was the limited ND range on Sony compared to the Canon. In bright outside situations, six stops of ND is not nearly enough on the Sony. You have 10 on Canon because it’s stackable…albeit the Sony shouldn’t have any color shifting because it doesn’t use a glass ND. Also, you have built in XLR and a mini jack on the Canon when not using the top handle. Sony you have to use the handle to get good audio. You also have many more codec options on the Canon.

I’ve always been a canon guy and currently shoot the C100 Mark ii. I’m strongly considering the FX6 because it seems like it could be better in low light and for commercial work because I can record external raw. I can use the canon glass if I want and manual focus or use the metabones and have AF.

C70 ordered. Was always a Canon shooter after the 5D, and so have a lot of Canon glass. Switched to Sony FS5 a few years back…love its function, but missed Canon color.

I believe it does retain all functionality with Sigma EF lenses, but not Canon brand lenses.

@@BrittneyJanae yeah it’s not ideal if you haven’t invested in Sigma art EF lenses only. I have a couple of canon ones but most are sigma and am glad I did that, in case I ever want to switch. The good news is that you didn’t invest in R or E mount lenses which can never be used on a different mount due to the reduced flange distance on mirrorless systems. That extra room that EF gets you at least allows you to adapt them to any system for manual use even if you may lose some tech functions like autofocus.

i agree with you. i shoot on sony. at the end of day. Workflow is a lot more important. Truth is When we watch movies and tv. 99% of the time We Don't even notice what Camera, and lens were used each scene. Even in this video. When you blind clips between cameras naturally. The storytelling is what matters most.

That's because there is a solution to the limitations of both cameras...provided you have the time and budget. When you're making a film there is a person dedicated to making sure the camera is always in focus. Nowadays one man can make a film. That would be impossible without automation.

Sony is exposing for the highlights rather than the face in the auto ND example, which is a terrible idea when shooting people and makes the models face underexposed (which you really don't want to do in S.Log). Also you can see the exposure slowly shift which is distracting.

Let's be real... I own both brands... and Blackmagic... My C70 is on it's way, I'm in love with my a7siii at least for now there's no point for me to get the FX6 for my work but the FX6 killed the C70 in this test lest be real and this has nothing to do with color science.. Color is very subjective. You was shooting with Cine Glass and the FX had regular photo glass and look at the images, low light we know Canon does not stand a chance against Sony, Auto Focus the FX 6 won with eye auto focus and you can keep auto focus even with exposure down 3 stops and again I ordered the C70 so I am not hating on Canon the C70 has a very good spot in my corporate workflow and my a7siii is my wedding go to. Sony FX6 took it here!

Hey Miguel, I need your help on deciding what camera to buy. So, heres' my list of final considerations: (I don't care about resolution, I just want the coolest colors, and the easiest run and gun/handheld/post production/least tinkering required set up (with a 70-200 canon (IS), an onboard shotgun, and monitor) BMPCC6k PRO: the image looks so nice and the braw file sizes seem manageable. It's also so much cheaper than anything else and the menus just seem so simple. I'm mainly worried about stabilizing at 200mm/ and if I will be annoyed with rigging it out every time. C70: your videos on It look epic. But its pretty expensive without having raw. Unless you think I can get the same gritty image on this as I can with the bmpcc 6k?! S1h/a7s ii/ fx6: these all seem similar. the former two I get IBIS and I've been told that will help. I guess I've fallen victim to believing in the 'sony look' and I for sure want something a bit more filmic. But tell me if im wrong. Komodo: I guess I could just sack up and get the komodo as I will probably have this camera for the next few years. Again, I've been making due with my current sony a7s ii and shitty old 70-200 vivitar and stabilizing with a shoulder strap, but its time to upgrade to a better image. Thank you so so so much

You gotta also take into account the user interface and your familiarity with the camera. Being a DP on a job with an unfamiliar camera can be a train wreck especially if you are in a doc shoot where you can’t miss anything. Having experience on both I can say that personally I prefer the C70, as most of my glass is s35 cine glass and the form factor is very similar to the 1dx ii and iii that I am used to. So at the end of the day, just go with what works for you since both are great camera systems.

Variable NDs in FX6 are great for marketing, but 7 stops of ND is not enough for primes, you can barely use f2.8 lenses in daylight. Btw, shooting in auto on FX6 or any camera, no comment, you can even see why in the samples :)

You just need to list your hierarchy of needs. If you already have Canon glass and don't want to give it up then the solution is simple. Its only becomes difficulty when you're starting from scratch. But even then you can still make a list of the type of video content you want to create. If you're going to do nature or underwater videography then low-light probably won't mean anything to you. If you need something to fit on a drone then the Canon is easily the better choice. You do or intend to do a lot of low-light or clandestine work? Then you'd choose Sony hands down. If you aren't sure of what you want, then you can begin at what you don't want or need. If you have a family of four then you're probably not going to be looking at a Corvette as your first and only car.

you have to overexpose the c70 to autofocus in low-light, while with the sony, it functions fine underexposed and prefers it but tends to lose focus if overexposed. if you are a day shooter and prefer to slightly over expose, canon's implementation is better.

The thing I notice most about Sony cameras is that all the tests are done with one person in frame, but the thing I don’t like like about them is when there’s two or more people in the same frame, everyone starts to have extremely different tints to their skin. We all know that if it was the Canon that had the full-frame sensor, this auto-exposure feature, dual native ISO, better autofocus, 16-Bit RAW output over HDMI, faster frame rates at 1080p, full XLR, SDI etc... this video would have been totally different. Even the Image quality comparaison section of this video had no actual "quality" comparaison. Guys, if you really believe that what matters is what tool is best for YOUR workflow, then give these other products a REAL fair review. That's why Gerald Undone is unanimously praised.

How are you gonna do a image quality comparaison between a ff sensor vs a Super35 and only talk about auto exposure with ND and colour science? How you gon say at the end that it all comes down to lenses and ecosystem when you didn't mention things like 16-bit raw recording, sdi, full XLR and 240fps but then you had to speak about the handle and the flip screen? It's like he really couldn't say that the camera was bad so he gave it some credits but then the whole video was about saying "my camera is still not bad and I love it" while ignoring some of the key features. How about you just give people all the information and let them choose what is best for THEM instead of that whole 'C70 is amazing because I own it' type of "COMPARAISON". Auto focus is for amateurs. It's quite laughable to mention auto focus on a movie set. That's how you know who's shooting movies and who's shooting KZbin of Facebook content.

Nah, that's pre-2020 mentality. The AI tech in these new cameras is slaying and it's just getting started. Of course AF has been a joke since video existed, because it wasn't controllable. It would focus on a little square in the center of the frame or whatever was closest to the camera or just what the camera wanted to. That's not useful. But sticky touch tracking as well as persistent eye tracking has changed the game. Try pulling focus on at f/1.4 while you're dollying into a subject at a moderate rate of speed. Are there insanely talented people out there who can do it? Yes. But that's not the point... now everyone can. There are already dozens of review videos online with reputable people stating the tech in the newest cameras can hold focus far better than they possibly can. That's not a trivial deal. Is it a magic bullet for every situation? No. And there will always be some shots where the human touch is just more authentic, like a purposeful rack focus. But this isn't about putting ACs out of business, it's adding another tool to the box. You're either ignorant or just oblivious at this point if you don't think this tech will eventually creep into even the highest level of cinema cameras before too long.

Does not exist on a real movie set. Maybe for your backyard family shoots or short films you make with your friends. No legit DP that's making movies charging $350 - $5,000 a day will take you serious when you say, you use auto focus. Don't know where you are getting this from but that individual is not shooting movies, TV series, or high end commercials. I can tell you've never shot a movie with a budget before. if you have, we will not be having tis conversation. HAhahahaha!!! Learn how to pull focus my guy. Auto focus is for amateurs. It’s also why RED put phase auto detect in the Komodo. It has uses and you will see it because someone with an open mind will create something great with it and that will set a new standard. @@guguemichaels If a DP is coming out for $350 a day... He's probably shooting a talking head interview, locked off, with auto focus :) "laughable" it's a tool man, simple as that. Knowing how to focus/track manually, or better yet communcate with your AC is what helps make you "legit". After that, use what you got when you need to, pride has no place in persuit of story.
