A little late for this comment, but the flash synch M doesn't stand for manual. It is used for flashbulb use and means that the flash is triggered about 10 milliseconds before the shutter opens, to give the bulb a chance to reach full light output. (Flashbulbs work by burning fine magnesium wire in an oxygen atmosphere.) The X position closes the flash contacts to fire the flash unit when the shutter is fully open and is used for electronic flash. If you use electronic flash with the M setting, the short burst of light the flash produces (which only lasts 1/1000 of a second or so) will occur before the shutter opens and you will wonder why the photograph is underexposed. Leave it set on X.

Finally-that makes sense. You never know where the information will come out. Sometimes it's just a comment on KZbin. I remember same lever on Contax , but i think it was X-V and for another purpose. It was stuck anyway.

I recently purchased this camera and I already managed to make two films. It's amazing, but with a camera that's 56 years old the exposure meter is still working perfectly!!!

Love your chanel, I've been collecting (and shooting with) analog camera's for a few years myself now. Only I noticed a few mistakes in your video; you called the accessory shoe a hot shoe, it's not. A hot shoe has electrical contacts in the accessory shoe for igniting (one contact) or multiple contact when the camera is also capable of adjusting the flash. Without contacts it's called a cold shoe. Also the X-M switch has nothing to do with Manual. It's for the flash synchronisation, M is for flash bulbs, X is for electronic flash. A flash bulb takes longer to ignite than an electronic flash, so flash bulbs are ignited earlier than electronic flashes. An electronic flash in M mode would give an under exposed picture, it will flash when the shutter is beginning to open, not when the shutter is full open. Keep up the good work, I like your video's.

Ah! Thanks! I've become and just call all accessory shoes 'hot'. I will make an effort to distinguish between them in the future. Thinking of it, its a BIG difference. I might go back and annotate the videos too. Thanks. I have to admit, I don't know too much about flash. Some of the information I know about flash and these cameras is from the manuals written for 1970's pros. Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it.

In the 60's my father and my grandfather were both shooting Argus C3 (my grandfather bought his new in 1951, my father bought his used in 1963) and it amazes me how different and how far advanced the Canonets were in comparison. While ergonomically the later Canonets with the wind lever on top was better, aesthetically the first Canonets were just so clean.

Nice video, well produced. A very small point. It's not a "hot shoe" it's an accessory shoe. A hot shoe would trigger a flash mounted there. This model required you to attach a cable to the flash-sync socket on the front.

I got the Canonet 28 for Christmas this past year. Great little camera. I've gotten some really nice photos from it. I'm not sure how I'd like the original. Having everything but the shutter button on the bottom seems a bit awkward.
@OldCameras
@OldCameras 8 жыл бұрын
Yes it is awkward. I didn't like that much. I know some people actually like it like that but for me, I don't like to think too much about what my fingers are doing. It's like driving a new car with the break and accelerator swapped around :)

This is the second version of the original canon canonet. the first version does not have a lock "B". and ISO values are at the top.
@standandeliver8376
@standandeliver8376 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, so they updated it without changing the name or overall appearance. That explains why the Canon website describes these as having a highest ASA (ISO) value of just 200 (not 400) and a Copal SLV shutter (not SV). Mind you, the same website contradicts itself with two different maximum aperture settings, so maybe they just don't know what they are talking about!

My first camera :) I still own it. I have a curious story about this model. My father was aboard a liner that was carrying Portuguese troops to Mozambique in 1961 and they stopped in Beira Port. A Japanese cargo ship was there too, doing maintenance before proceeding to Europe, and my father bought the camera to a Japanese sailor. Maybe one of the first ones to be bought by an European, even before they were sold in Europe?

Thanks for the video. Great Explanation. I have just got one camera like this one and I am not sure if it does not have some problem. After adjusting the ASA if I move the shutter speed dial, the ASA lever moves also changing his position and ASA value. Also I don't know how to proceed with the drawings down: Sunny cloudy... Thanks again and greetings from Spain.

@OldCameras 8 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks. I will one day. I'm still going through the collection I own at the moment. When I run out, or if I suddenly acquire one of those, I'll give them a test. They're both quite expensive right now though as they're so well known (are good) I've done some less expensive ones though if you're interested ; Olympus AF-10 for example.
@spidiq8
@spidiq8 7 жыл бұрын
Old Cameras The Olympus mju series are probably my favourite 'modern' p&s cameras, I had, for years, a mju2 which was really slick in operation and having regretted selling it many years back because my major gripe was not being able to manually set iso for bulk loaded film I recently picked up a mju zoom 105 which I intend to review soon after running a roll of film through and processing it. So far, it's a bit slower and more clunky sounding than my old mju2 was but at a bargain car boot price and looking like it's worked hard I'll accept that. If you can pick one up do so, honestly the 'original' none zoom is overrated and overpriced on ebay and such but the later zooms are more versatile and typically cheaper online too. Great channel btw, I do enjoy your reviews.
