I think he has used the Canon 14mm f/2.8 L II USM as I use mine (I have that model). I do nature photography but I have used the 14mm f/2.8 to make small-ish things like Mushrooms, look much bigger, giving me the ability to take worm view photos of Mushrooms and other things my 100mm Macro is not ideal for. I call those photos Organic Skyscrapers. :)

Thank you for the nice feed back. The T3i is a great camera and if pair it with the 10-22 lens you will get all the same results you see on my video. You are right however the 24 1.4 II L lens is acually my favorate lens of all time, it is the only lens always in my pack. I will be doing a video on it soon. All the best with your purchase!

Not a single comment about image quality. IQ is the biggest determining factor in choosing one of these lenses. I own both and while I love the versatility of the 16-35, it can't touch the 14mm prime's sharpness at ANY aperture.
@raredreamfootage7 жыл бұрын
IQ is beaten like a dead horse. Every website talks about IQ. So I am glad Nick Murray is talking about other aspects not relating to IQ.

On a APS-C camera 14mm = 22mm which is not very wide. Take a look at renting the 10-22mm that is one of the big advantages of having EF-S compatible camera you can use this lovely lens.
@guillaumeerard10 жыл бұрын
Very helpful thanks. Given that I use my wide angle (17-40) mostly for Glidecam work, the zoom is not really useful for me (not mentioning having to rebalance the whole thing if I do zoom) so a prime seems like the best option, especially if it is lighter than the 16-35. The price however...
@NickMurray11 жыл бұрын
Yes some in both particularly on full frame. But not that bad.

I think there is so many amazing things you can do with a wide angle. I am never without one. If you can afford one get it. You will love it.
@NickMurray11 жыл бұрын
The prime has it over the zoom in sharpness. Still the 16-35 is very sharp in the center of the frame

Update, Hitech do make a filter system for the 14mmL II, it is called the Lucroit System. I love my 14mmL II, held off buying this lens until Hitech came out with the filter system. Got one now(second hand mint still under warranty until Jan 2014 for U$1500) and paired it with the 6D. The reason why I bought F.F is to use this lens and the original Canon 15mm Fisheye.

Canon 16-35 mm f4 image stabilized lens brought state of the art sharpness to Canon's ultra wide lenses. Only the newer 11-24 f4 or the 16-35 f2.8 miii are as sharp but neither of these lenses have image stabilization and cost twice as much. And all other ultra wides are inferior.

Tamron 15-30mm easily fits in with the Canon 2.8 wide zooms. I just saw a 14mm 2.8 for under $900 AUD. I might buy it. I shot with that lens years ago and was extremely pleased with the results.

I'm going to be sad letting go of my 10-22. Upgrading to full frame. I was always pleased with the result (never really pixel-peeped though). My 24-70 will have to do as my widest for now. But I've always eyed the 14mm. It's such beautiful glass

on controlled environment, it's not an issue with today digic5+ camera that it's iso3200 was as clean as iso800 on digic4 camera. but on run & gun setup especially for documentary it's still an issue since you really have to works a lot with avaiable light. I have some unusable (but not many) footage because f1.4 doesn't help at all, even the best post-pro noise reduction can't fix it.

I appreciate lens reviews, but you need to get into more specifics. How about things like: comparing how sharp each lens is at different apertures? How each lens distorts, and the difference in distortion? How fast each lens is to auto-focus?
@lafont72010 жыл бұрын
Considering that it is a prime lens does the 14mm do better with barrel distortion and sharpness in the edges than the zoom at 16mm? I would hope so for the extra 800.

Yes it does a lot better job particularly on the edges

Dylan Tramp You can get the excellent 17-40mm L for $700 new or for a crop sensor camera take a look at the new EF-S 10-18mm for only $300

@NickMurray10 жыл бұрын
Dylan Tramp yes those are Canon, Sigma and Tamron do similar models. Look for the Sigma 10-20mm at around $650 but I think the Canon 10-18mm at half the price is a better buy

@messengersforliberty8 жыл бұрын
Curious about your opinion Nick when comparing the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 vs. the Canon 16-35mm f4. I've seen videos explaining how the f4 is sharper on the sides especially, but was curious about your thoughts when dealing with the two lenses. I do have a Canon C100, and use DSLR lenses for video, so the optical stabilizer seems on the f4 is enticing, but was curious how much it helps since the lenses themselves are wide angle. Anyways, curious if you have any thoughts on the subject matter???
@olegasphoto7 жыл бұрын
messengersforliberty I also have c100 and a samyang 14mm lens. if you move slowly u can use it easily without IS. on 35mm IS is a must when shooting handheld.

Hello Nick, what do you think of the 20-105mm?
@NickMurray9 жыл бұрын
You mean the 24-105? It is a fine general purpose lens but being only f/4 it does nothing amazing.
@PontiRamanta11 жыл бұрын
or if you were a videographer. for videomaking purposes, every f stop wider is critical in low light condition especially in run & gun environment, because the shutter speed is limited on 1/30 as the lowest, and most cinematic videographer use fixed shutter speed 1/50 @25fps or 1/48 @24 fps via magic lantern

Im very beginner, so dont get mad, but why not just get fisheye?
@NickMurray10 жыл бұрын
Yes a fisheye is another way to get very wide angle and a 15mm fisheye is in fact wider than the 14mm and much cheaper. The problem with fisheye lens is the distortion. Ever straight line become a curve and while you can fix some of that in post processing the fisheye effect is not desirable.

hey, how about the 8-15 mm ? is it too extreme?
@NickMurray10 жыл бұрын
The 8-15mm is not really a wide angle lens it is a fish eye lens, which is super wide but very distorted. Most of the time you would use it at 15mm because at 8mm it is just a circle in the frame. Do a search on 8-15mm images and you see what I mean.
