Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM assembly after replacing the aperture flex cable

This video is about assembling the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 USM lens after the aperture cable has been replaced. I had this lens which had problems with the aperture. The aperture did not work, and it was caused by a faulty flex cable. So I had to disassemble the lens, replace the flex cable with a new one, then assemble the lens. In this video I'll show you how to assemble the lens after the aperture unit flex cable has been replaced with a new one.

It should be noted that, the aperture assembly inserted (4:00) will not be secured inside until 12:17. There, screws number 2, 4, and 6 are the ones being fastened to the aperture assembly inside. Finding the screw holes on the aperture assembly was tricky because it doesn’t sit flush against the rear element assembly; you have to move it back until you can see the holes. I hope others will find this additional info helpful. FYI, I owned this lens since 2006, and it gave me some amazing photos of my family, friends and nature. I am so grateful that it’s working again, and thank you for taking your time making this video!

Sure, people do tear-down videos, but why does NO ONE ever think of creating an assemble video!? BUT you did, and it and the few other videos I've reviewed are AWESOME! I have replaced the aperture ribbon cable and now it works, although the zoom is quite a bit stiff at the wide end, could this be because in handling parts I wiped grease off and didn't replace it? Or does it just need to bed in a bit? Thanks for a great video!

I stripped it against and added a tiny bit of grease to the cams. I also loosened and retightened the screws at the cams without removing them, which seemed to help things bed in better and the zoom runs well now.

I may have rotated the front lens element because my mark was wiped out. Could that be the cause?

Could be... rotate the lens a little-by-little, and check the sharpness at every setting.

So I just need to replace the cable, not the entire aperture module? I’m a diy guy and this seems pretty tedious, but entirely doable. I paid an aftermarket specialist $400 to fix my 24-70mm a few years ago and when I put the lens on today it no longer works. I’ll be damned if I’m paying them again if I can fix it for $10 and a very careful process. Thanks!!

The cheapest way is to replace only the aperture cable. If you don't want to do soldering, then replacing the whole aperture unit with the cable is an option which is easier but more expensive.

@@CamerasLensesEtc I commented on part 1. I managed to replace everything and put it back together, but when I did, I did not have the full focal range, the lens will not auto focus, and I still get the error message. Help! What did I do wrong??

Hi, I replaced diaphgram unit with new cable. After assembly same error occurs, but sometimes camera takes picture with different set aperture and no error, while the aperture really hasn't changed. Could it be that diaphgram is stuck ? It makes buzzing sound when error occurs. Anything advices ? I think that i diassembly once again and use old diaphgram and new cable.

First, check the aperture using the dof button. Set the aperture to the smallest value (f/22 or smaller), and push the dof button several times to close the aperture, and view it if it is closed to the same amount. If not, then the aperture unit is faulty. I would recommend to buy a 100% genuine Canon aperture, or use the aperture unit which was in the lens, and replace the cable only.

If there is eccentric screw collars in the lens, mark their position, and then put them back where they were at the same position as they were there originally. That is the easiest way to more or less keep the lens calibrated. If you want to calibrate your lens, then I have a link to a blog article about calibration in my 24-105mm video, you might can use that to calibrate your lens.
