I have this lens and it pairs perfectly with my 5D4. Great combo for wildlife. You get amazing subject separation at F4 and is very useful in lower light situations where I found that the 100-400ii 5.6 would struggle a bit.
@stephenbarlow24934 жыл бұрын
An interesting comparison would be to test the 300mm f2.8 IS. Either version. This has a reputation of being Canon's sharpest lens. The II version is only slightly heavier than the 400mm f4 DO II, and with a 1.4x extender creates a 420mm f4. The prices are similar for the 2 lenses and the 300mm f2.8 lenses have a reputation of being very sharp with teleconverters. I suspect that the 400mm DO might just be a tiny bit sharper than the 300mm f2.8 IS II with the the 1.4x extender, and the AF a bit faster - but not the bare 300mm f2.8 without the 1.4x extender. But I doubt there would be much in it, and the 300mm f2.8 would be more versatile, because of course it is also a 300mm f2.8.

I think the new RF 600 and 800 are refractive optics
@vikmanphotography79844 жыл бұрын
@@inuit2winit They're not. You can look at the lens diagram if you want but by being dark f/11 optics, Canon is able to shrink the lenses considerably. Tbh, I had no idea that those lenses existed before this but they seem way too niche to be introduced this early on for the RF mount. f/11 makes them pretty worthless for a lot of applications that demand conventional super-telephoto optics (why not just get a cheap mirror lens at that point) and not many entry-level buyers need a super-telephoto. I'd have much rather preferred to see Canon release an updated 400/2.8, 600/4.0, 800/5.6, or better yet, a more affordable 50mm optic to replace their super old EF 50/1.4 or EF 50/1.8 which is quickly becoming irrelevant.

@@vikmanphotography7984 I'm no optical engineer and frankly have no idea how to interpret a lens diagram, but canon themselves say that those lenses use diffractive optics so I'm gonna go with them 😜 As for the market, I'm not sure, I guess maybe canon is hoping they'll be a gateway drug into the really expensive telephoto lenses; or an alternative to using something like a 100-400+TC where budget and weight are more important than absolute performance
@vikmanphotography79844 жыл бұрын
@@inuit2winit woops. I was wrong about the diffractive group. It's the third optical group from the front if you're curious. Still think it's poor market targeting but I'm not giving Canon my money any more anyways so I guess it doesn't matter.

If you like this lens, Nikon makes a Phase Fresnel (diffractive) 300mm f/4 that’s super sweet, you should test it on the Z7. It’s amazingly compact, the size of a 24-70, and a lot more affordable than this, though still quite expensive

@kirostar123 жыл бұрын
I have a Canon 400mm F5.6 and this lens is little bit sharper then 400mm F4 DO IS II but is almost not noticeable is my opinion. I upgraded to 400mm F4 DO IS II to take advantage of the greater magnification I can achieve.. With 1.4 TC = 560mm F5.6 or 896mm with 1.6x crop body. That's help with the AF performance at that magnification specially for birds in fly. Also I can quickly back the lens to F4 when I need more light just before sunset, around sunrise or in a cloudy day. 800mm F8 or 1280mm in 1.6x crop camera is possible in a sunny days for stationary objects. The ability to have 4 stops IS is something where the 400mm F5.6 doesn't have. I can shoot handheld in slow shutter speed and eliminate the need of tripod. I am really happy I found this amazing lens for just $4650 on E-bay in Mint condition and I even was able to lower the price to $4000 :). In conclusion, I can say that I have been shooting wildlife for more than 10 years, I have tried almost all super telephoto lenses and I can say that this is one of the best lenses for shooting wildlife, which makes your work enjoyable and easy.

It is among Canon's sharpest lenses of all; the only lenses slightly sharper may be some of the other $10,000 ultra teles, otherwise this 400mm is sharper than any of Canon's black lenses, sharper than any of its zooms and sharper than any of its macro lenses. Although the 400mm DO is not an L lens. Canon claims DO lenses are all that L lenses are, and then some. No big deal; this lens has enough alphabet soup as it is. No other lens or camera manufacturer has produced anything like the Canon DO lenses. They're not smart enough to figure out how Canon did it. And you're not smart enough to test any lens.
