Some Fuji fans are saying this is not as good as the Fuijnon XC 35mm f/2 because they looked at this video's resolution chart @ 2:20 and saw "Averagely good sharpness", whereas the Fujinon was reviewed as "Razor sharp" wide open. But they forgot to compare the Viltrox @ f/2 versus the Fujinon @ f/2, which is pretty close. Mr. Frost, it would be helpful if you made a shootout video: - Fujinon XC 35mm f/2 - Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.7 XF - TTArtisan AF 35mm f/1.8 II

This lens kills off both 23mm and 33mm on Fujifilm. It makes 23mm and 33mm redundant unless you're going for lightweight. I.e. you could get the Fuji XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR, but that would be redundant alongside this Viltrox. The Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 XF V2 still isn't redundant due to its weight being half that of the AF 27mm f/1.2 XF. A nice aspect of this is that it allows for a more minimal prime kit with 3 or 4 lenses instead of 4 or 5 lenses. I.e. the Viltrox setup is (FF equivalent): - 20mm f/2.14 - 40mm f/1.84 - 85mm f/2.14 - 115mm f/1.84 Instead of the Fujinon setup: - 24mm f/2.14 - 35mm f/2.14 - 50mm f/2.14 - 85mm f/1.84 - 135mm f/3.06

I just got the 500mm to go with my XH2s and was trying it out these past couple of days [on birds] ..Very fast lens and beautiful results .... then I SLAPPED ON MY 1.4X TELECONVERTER ... AND EVERYTHING WENT DOWN THE STEEP SLOPE........ back home on internet I realised there is another converter which is white.... mine is black and works fine with the 100-400mm and even 150-600mm but not with the 500mm it hunts forever and does not focus........at all.........I doubt there is anything to do about it ,but if there is I wouild like to hear about it.......[apart from buying a white one ]😀

It's equivalent to f/1.4 on full frame. Aperture and focal length must have equivalence factor applied before comparing different formats.

keen on the Art range for quality and budget balance. I've just found this lens for £350 nearly new, as my first upgrade. Should I be buying six year old lenses at this point though or save up for a newer 24mm?

It's close to a year since I got this lens as part of the R8 kit. I'm a professional designer but never specialized in photography so all photo knowledge I had was from when I was in design school/university. Basically I still remembered photo theory but couldn't put my knowledge into specs (f-stops, focal lengths etc.) I wanted/needed for my lens. I decided on the R8 for it's good video specs, and I love it a lot. I got this lens as part of the kit - it was basically for free, as I would've paid the same for just the body. I thought it'd do. I hated the lens almost immediately, free or not. Maximum aperture was too high, making indoor-shooting annoying. Then you couldn't zoom in videos, or it'd adjust the aperture making it basically useless for video where you had to zoom. 24-50mm was also a ridiculously low zoom-range, I felt like it barely zoomed at all but had all the downsides of it. The picture quality was okay, not pristine, but okay. So basically, what use is a free lens when you can barely use it for anything. I bought the R35mm 1.8 in the first two weeks of owning my camera kit and while it hurts a bit with the lack of 24-35 indoors it does almost everything else so much better. It has gorgeous picture quality, it has an amazing low f-stop of 1.8, you can make really nice bokeh with it as a result. It can also do macro beautifully. The autofocus is a little slow in the sense it can have problems focusing my pets when they zoom around (worse than the 24-50mm, which has great AF, I'll admit to as much), but otherwise really a great lens. Now I know I totally should've gone for the 35mm instead of this kit-lens. I feel nobody is going to be happy with this, not even beginners with low standards. Because let's be real, if you're okay with this lens, you should've probably gone for a cheaper APS-C camera in the first place, like the R10. People who want something versatile that can zoom, will not be happy with 24-50mm and should go for either the cheap 24-105 (at least it has a good range!) or the 24-240. People who want nice low-light or bokeh shots, need a prime like the 35mm f1.8, 50mm f1.8 or 85mm f2. I regretted getting this lens and hope to sell it eventually and trade it for either the new 28-70mm f2.8 or the 24-105 at some point.

Thanks for another great review! I enjoyed the samples, too. Pity about the low hit rate with the X-T5. P.S.: a nit pick, but the 500mm f/5.6 is 'just' 2/3 stops faster than the 150-600 when set at 500mm.

Cool lens, but why would any wildlife photographer invest in this ecosystem? Even 10 year old Canon and Sony do subject detection/ focusing so much better. After all these FW-updates, I'm not at all confident that it's a poorly optimized algoritm-issue, but rather a hardware-thing.

Sigma 30mm 1.4 or Viltrox 35mm 1.7? What lens I should buy for A6700?
@carlosreyesf192 күн бұрын
The Viltrox seems a lot sharper and cheaper. The only con are the lack of weather sealing, the plastic construction, and the slightly narrower aperture.

Preordered this lens - waiting for release in the UK. I have the 150-600 and will keep it for larger wildlife, but use the 500 for my main subjects - birds.
@anthonyhurren56132 күн бұрын
Thanks for the review Chris. I have been using this lens since the end of November when it first hit uk stores as I have been waiting for years for Fuji to produce a longer prime like this. I think it’s a sweet spot for APSC and wildlife photography for the reach and overall weight and image quality. I previously owned the 150-600 but sold that with a another Len’s to get this one it’s definitely the best long prime alongside the 200mm f2 to own for wildlife photography from Fuji. But your right in terms of Fuji needing to improve their autofocus algorithms on their cameras for birds in flight to get the best out of this Lens, for birds in branches etc I have found the hit rate fine defo higher than 30% for me if using zone or single point combined with bird eye detect rather than the wide tracking mode which isn’t as reliable I have found on Fuji cameras. I do hope the hit rate for critical focus in BIF will get some attention from Fuji as I am getting some beautifully sharp shots but also some where it just misses the eye as well. Thanks for you review. Kind regards Anthony 🙏

They’ve hardly shipped any - there are a few people who have got them but there’s a massive wait in many places.

@@faz-io first "batch" delivered, lots of folks on reddit and forums talking about them. The point is, review copies are normally sent to reviewers before any retail shipments, and then on first day of retail shipping - the review embargo is lifted. That hasn't happened, why?
