Very nice review. Nice to see a reviewer who doesn't completely dismiss a lens just because it doesn't have a red ring. People who do that make you feel like any non L lens you buy will be a bad lens. But you're not like that, so thanks!

I did try a Mk1 Canon 100 - 400mm USM IS but couldn't get along with the size and the push-pull zoom. I've been looking at this lens primarily because I own: canon EFS 18-135 with IS canon 100-300 ultrasonic w/o IS Recently I tried to take pictures of loons on the lake and needed a bit more range so I strapped on the 300mm but had terrible results without IS. My go-to lens tends to be the EIS lens. In passing you mentioned a range extender. I am now left wondering should I really be looking at an entirely new lens or simply an extender to get the extra range. Do you have insights for a new shooter here? You mentioned extenders are touchey with bodies so will mention I'm on a EOS rebel t4i and do not plan to update the body in my lifetime if that helps for your response.

Thank you for this great review and I also read your review on your website. I have to warn people that I just bought the Canon EF 70-300 IS II USM lens from Canon's Amazon store and unfortunately it had lens aberrations on the front glass. I contacted the seller and they immediately sent me a return label and sent me a replacement lens within 3 days. They also asked if I would consider keeping the lens if they took $60 off the price... I told them no and that I wanted a new lens. These lens are selling for $514 on Canon's Amazon store which is $35 cheaper than what they are going for through Canon's website or BH at $549. Well after receiving the new replacement lens guess what? It had the "exact same aberrations as the original one did... I again called the seller and told them I wanted my money back which they agreed to immediately with no problem upon receiving the second lens back through UPS. I am going to order a third one through Canon's main website but not before letting them know I am not happy about this. I purchased my T7i camera and 3 lenses from Canon's main website with no problems with anything and they were refurbished! I suspect Canon's Amazon store is were they try to unload their factory rejects at a discounted rate. That would be OK if they told the customer that up front but they do not. Your review was encouraging though for what I want this lens for which will be wildlife and mostly birds in flight. I do a lot of kayaking the shallow saltwater lagoons here in Central Florida and the opportunity for this kind of photography is amazing. I am a bit nervous about ordering another of these lens though even from their main website. If I get a third one with lens aberrations I very well may sell my gear and go with Sony or Nikon and I will tell them that when I call and order it... I know I should have known better "buyer beware" and all that but, again, Canon did not honestly advertise these things as being factory seconds and after buying their refurbished products with no problem I figured I was good to go. On hindsight I should have read the negative reviews as this problem was mentioned many times. Sorry to be so long winded but I'm just hoping to save someone else from the same aggravation. Thanks again!

Primarily use camera for travel, landscape, portrait, family events & baby. Travel to Europe mainly. 100-400 is out of my budget & probably I won't be able to do justice with it. 70-200 f4 IS very attractive but may be I need a bit more zoom specially already 18-135 in my kit. If this lens still worked manually with the Kenko TCs then it could still be used for great shots of the moon.

Aperture with APS-C crop is complicated. Depth of field does require the crop factor to be applied to the aperture (so depth of field of 6.4), but the physical aperture size for light gathering remains the same. So F4 behaves like F4 either on full frame or APS-C - the shutter speed requirement will be the exact same.

I heard that the IS USM II is comparable to the L in terms of sharpness in some aspects but definitely the L is better. Just wondering if it is worth that much more money. Please advice. Thanks
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
I would say the biggest reason to choose the L lens is for the build and smoother bokeh. If you work in decent weather and want to save money, the USM II is a fine choice.

Always like your reviews. But just yesterday I came across this article on lensrentals blog. Title:"Things You Didn’t Want to Know About Zoom Lenses" www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/02/things-you-didnt-want-to-know-about-zoom-lenses/ This article is quite interesting as it concludes, that the variation within a number of zoom-lenses from the same typ and brand is quite high also at different focal lengths. The thesis is supported by the fact that different youtubers, reviewers, forum guys etc. come to different conclusions on (zoom-)lenses. So one could get a lens which is sharp at 300mm but soft at 70mm and the next gets one with the opposite qualities and the third gets one which is average at all focal lengths. The lesson should be, try out your copy of a lens before buying to avoid bad surprises and disappointments. But who asks for three different copies for comparison when going to a retailer? And if someone does, would the shop do as asked? So far I believed that noticeable variation in optical quality of zoom lenes from one type and brand are the exception rather than the rule, but now I'm not so sure.
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
I don't think the correct conclusion is that all zoom lenses should be mistrusted. I read the article, and I think that it is suggesting that there is more room for variability due to the complexity of zoom lenses. On a number of occasions they have tested multiple copies of a particular zoom lens and found sample variability rather low.

I am wondering if this lens can be used with canon extender on EOSR + L mount adapter combo If yes .. what is trade off in terms of AF performance and Image quality
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
If I'm not mistaken, the problem is that an extender won't physical fit. There has to be a certain amount of room in the back of the lens before the rear element, and, when that's not the case, the extender isn't physically compatible.

Very nice Video! How would you compare it to the 70-200 f4 l? I am looking for a general purpose tele lens for my 6d mk ii and I want to use it for landscapes and sports photography. I could get the 70-200 f4 non is (not sure if I really need the is?) used for 300€ and the is version for 500€. I cannot find this lens on the used market so it would be 400€ new. I would love to hear your opinion on this.
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
I would personally choose this lens over the non-IS 70-200. I think the optical performance is possibly better, and having IS is very important on a tele like this.

My copy has arrived from Canon Brazil today, but I have found on my 80D an issue with the focus motor at 300mm. When I focus on the both limits nearest and infinite the focus just don't work again. I already send them an e-mail about the issue asking how to send them back.
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
That's odd. It's unusual to have a focus issue like that with a first party lens.

how does this differ from the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM UD Telephoto Zoom Lens?
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
A number of ways, from build to maximum aperture comparisons. They are both solid lenses, but the L has the pro-grade build that you'll want if you're going on safari or shooting in hostile conditions.

Hello Abbott, d you think this lens is suitable for video? I mean, L lens are great, but heavy for run and gun docs. So i was thinking about this lens. Any comments on this? I already own the 18-135 nano and find it great.

Hello. Dustin I love the way you review. I saw your review on Tamron 18-400 and I bought it just after I watched your video on KZbin but in a week I wasn't happy with the lens specially with the Image quality so I sell it back as a second hand. so I wanted to buy this lens since I have the 18-135 is usm I'm really satisfy with it. do you recommend to but this I want a to have a long range zoom lens. please tell me I have Canon 80d. Sincerely yours David.

Does it realy mattet with weather sealing if you don't have a canon camera house that also is. As for the prices I have seen the 5dlv weather sealed house is out of the question for ordinary people
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
Well, obviously some sealing on one of the components does help, but you're right in that if your camera isn't sealed, the lens being sealed isn't going to radically change things.

Hey Dustin How does this lens work on the canon eos R in 4K video mode? Does it convert to APC at all to help with the super crop factor in video or does it just act like a Full frame lens like the rest.
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
Hi Shazamm - I'm not sure you understand how APS-C lenses work. All lenses are given in their 35mm (full frame) designation. Thus, as 10mm APS-C lens acts just like a 10mm FF lens does - on Canon APS-C it becomes a 16mm equivalent focal length. The crop factor on the EOS R is going to affect all lenses equally whether they are designed for APS-C or FF. The only reason an APS-C lens might be better for dealing with the crop factor is that it might have a wider focal length than what is commonly available for full frame. For example there are 10-22mm APS-C zooms, while the common full frame zoom starts at 16mm.

I bought this in 2020 for some amateur bird photography. The problem I had with 55 250 is stm was that the AF was very slow. And it was hard to capture birds in flight. Your review reinforced my opinion about this lens. 70-300 l is way above my budget so I think I am left with this one.

It's a solid choice.

Hello Dustin, i'd like to say "thank you" personally for this comprehensive Tamron 70-300 VC vs Canon 70-300 II Review - well done, excellent. Also very interesting onto your Website, that the Canon Mk. II does go faster into smaller Apertures than the Tamron. I'd say the Tamron holds up very well into comparsion, and still could be had (2nd Hand) for a bargain. Wondering if the Mk. II here would be better in terms of AF Speed & IQ perhaps a bit.
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
That's about right. The Canon is a more polished lens, but the Tamron still holds it's own fairly well, though it's loses a bit at 300mm.

Hi Dustin, thoughts on this lens vs the 70-200 f4 non-is? Currently have one on a crop sensor body, and wondering how YOU think it stacks up both in terms of optical performance and day to day usability

+Felix LeClair I suspect you will find this lens easier to use due to the IS, more compact form factor, and greater focal range.

Great review and have now subscribed, really like the way you do your reviews!...so I actually own the Tamron SP70-300mm and do not find it that great on my 7D, was going to eventually upgrade to the Canon 70-300L (still around £1100 in the UK) but this throws another in the mix! Do you think a worthy upgrade from the Tamron, or as I already own the Tamron I am better with plan A, going for the L glass? Many Thanks
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
The L lens is still my favorite of the bunch if you can afford it. If you would rather spend your money elsewhere, however, the new IS II is a nice upgrade, I think

Hello from Spain !! my current lens is a 70-300 is usm. I'm planning a trip to Japan through "mapcamera" and I have doubts between 2 lenses: Canon EF 70-300mm f / 4-5.6 II IS USM ... NEW. and Canon EF 70-200mm f / 4 L IS USM ... of 2nd HAND in perfect condition. the difference between the two is around $ 300. the change to L range is worth it for $ 300 + 2x converter (to have 300mm) ?? I have read that with the 2x it loses a lot (autofocus and sharpness) ... is that true? can you help me?? Thanks in advance
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
My recommendation is that if having 300mm of reach is important to you, go for the lens with the native focal length that covers that range (unless you have other lenses for which you want to use the TC. I rarely recommend a 2x converter to anyone. 1.4x seems to be the limit with most situations that you retain excellent image quality and AF.

Hi. I have recently bought this lens as I wanted a 'proper' telephoto one for an airshow I have coming up. I partially took your advice, as well as some stuff I read on other sites. I would say about 50% of the decision was helped by your three videos about the lens. Anyway I love it! Mostly. It's stunning how fast this lens finds focus, except when it doesn't. that is, I was following a, fairly slowly moving, aircraft the other day. (It was going in to land at a nearby airport) and although I managed to focus on the jet, after I took that first shot, the lens refused to focus on it again! I suppose that's what you mean by focus hunting? My camera was set to AI Servo, as I read it should be for fast moving objects, so I'm rather annoyed by that one little thing, which I hope won't mess up my first attempts at airshow photography. But having said that, in all other instances I am in love with this lens. Especially the bokeh I am getting when shooting flowers for my gardening partner! So many thanks Dustin. I'm hooked to your channel now!
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
Glad to help out. And yes, that's what hunting means. As you gain experience with the lens you should be able to mitigate that somewhat.
