As an owner of the lens, I would completely agree with your assessment. Greatest lens ever made? Of course not. But, one of the most convenient lenses ever? Absolutely! My M kit has extended my hiking years, and part of that is due to this lens. As you note, it likely needs "companions" for most photographers, and I've done that with the 11-22mm and 32 mm f/1.4. It's the R kit in the lowlands, and the M kit about town and into the mountains.

You are mentioning an inspiring subject: “all in all, stopping down one stop makes the image quality better, like it is with any lens.” This could be an interesting topic for a video. Thank you, Peter.

I agree that that focal lenght of this lens is very versatile. The size isn't that big either.

10/8/21 I never owed a Canon camera film or digital even though they are one of the main brands and that their colors are often liked by many with the files they produced. Going from my film day my preference has been a zoom over a prime lens unless the light level was low. The ability to frame in-camera out weight the need to move in further or closer to get the shot. One of my first advanced digital cameras is a Sony DSC200 30X zoom because it works the way I used my film cameras for framing and not missing the shoot. From there I went to a Sony A-55 SLT cause I could use my many Minolta Maxim AF lenses, both prime and zoom with a larger sensor. Now my main is the Olympus OM- D series cause of the smaller size and weight compared to any full-frame Canon or Nikon. For my needs, the Olympus meets most of my needs for stills or video with its great image stabilization, and smaller form factor, and weight. A slower lens is not so much of an issue with higher ISO that gives cleaner images and the new post-production software with AI that can resolve the issues if needed.

I moved away from canon, because of color problems. I find olympus handling it a lot better than Canon and Sony. Especially red and orange colors.

Hi Peter, have you tried the Canon RP yet? Zoom lenses are heavier, of course, but the kit quality ones are not terribly heavy and are decent in rendering. My favorite, so far, is the 50mm f1.8 inexpensive, but very good lens -- fast and light. Will consider the RF 85mm f2.0 some day, and/or the RF 100-400mm if it is decent in performance - price is low. I like the color rendering of Canon, shooting in the Fv mode is wonderful, and it is made in Japan. If you ever use the Canon RP, do give the Fv mode of shooting a go! The M6 Mark II with a viewfinder added, sounds like a neat little camera. Wonder if you can set it for minimum shutter speed, thus avoiding having to use shutter priority on the street? If they added the Fv mode, that would be cool. I do believe priority will be given to FF camera mounts however in the future, so the RP might be a better deal. Wonder what the next low end FF Canon will be??? I still use a DSLR Nikon, and Panasonic, Olympus gear as well --- it's all good! Just a heads-up for USA bunch, the Panasonic 14-140mm is on sale for $498. But it appears they are out of stock :( The Panny 35-100mm seems nice too, and is $398. -Loren

I have not. I did test the canon R5. I have asked if Canon Finland has R6 for a test, but have not gotten an answer yet.

I have a canon eos-m and I am seriously considering buying this lens, I mainly take horse pictures, would you recommend this lens or maybe go in another direction I have borrowed my little brother's EF-S 18-135MM USM a few Times and am fully satisfied with it, it's just a little big and heavy for my little camera also I need a new camera bag if I buy it

Missed this Canon lens review. Along with Olympus I own a Canon M5 with this 18-150 and 32mm 1.4 The Canon EF-M system is light and small, My M5 looks about the size of my EM5/2 but lighter and no weather seal. The 18-150 is a good lens but not in the same league as the Olly 14-150II, Olly lenses are just sharper in general than the EF-M line up. What I do like though is Canon lenses will give better star bursts. EF M is a dead end system that Canon never seemed to show any love to, shame as size and weight make it a very portable user friendly system. My two cents, save money like I did not, and buy Olympus forget the Canon EF M. I own two Canon M5's, one has the 18-150, the other has the 32mm 1.4

Peter, I am deciding between Canon ef-m 55-200mm vs 18-150mm, wondering if you got a chance to review the 55-200mm at all, and which lens do you recommend, can afford only one at the moment, big thanks!
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 2 жыл бұрын
That is a hard call. What lenses you already have? The focal length range is quite different between these two lenses. I would say if you already have a wide-angle I would go with the 55-200mm. If you do not have a wide-angle, the 18-150mm will give you more opportunities.

@@ForsgardPeter Thanks Peter, I currently have Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 kit lens, Sigma 16 mm f/1.4 (C) AF DC DN Lens for Canon EF-M X Mount, Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM Lens, Canon EOS M Series EF-M 22mm f/2 STM Wide-Angle Lens etc, so what do you think will work the best for me - 18-150mm or 55-200mm, thanks again for your instant reply!
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 2 жыл бұрын
With that set of lenses I would get the 55-200mm. That will add a new focal length range to your kit. 18-150mm overlaps quite a bit and might not be that useful. Unless you need a travel lens for all around photography. Then the 18-150mm might be a good solution. These are always very hard to say.

How would I clean the inside part of my lence? My cleaning kit pad is black does it matter? And also with my lense each time I zoom in it blurs and some times it doesn’t
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter Жыл бұрын
You cannot really clen the lens is inside unless you take it a part. I do not recommend that. If there is a loft dust inside the lens the best thing to do is to take it for repair.

I’ve got an Em5ii with the 14-150mm which has been great for all round and travel. I picked up an m50ii a couple months back. How would you rate this lens against the Olympus 14-150?

I like Olympus and I am more used to it so I would say M.Zuiko 14-150, but this lens is quite good for M-system cameras.

I'm just planning to buy this lens together with EOS M50 MKII, for our next travelling. Basically I'm using 500/4 prime with EOS R3 to bird photography which is a different league and different field of use, but I need something for travelling. As I see the test pictures, this could be a good compromise. I fully agree with you is better to have a bit softer image than don't have it at all. Furthermore, we have plenty of possibilities to improve the image quality during the post processing. PS+Topaz can improve a lot, so I do not worry even the photos are a bit soft on 150mm. Thank you for this review, it was very useful!
