Hi Dustin, thank you for the review of the Canon EF-M 18-150mm IS STM, it was very good. I recently bought a Canon EOS M5 and EF-M 15 - 45 lens Kit and I am very pleased with the performance of the camera, even more when I use it with my Canon EF lenses. I am looking to complete the range with the M lenses, what would you recommend, cost/benefit, quality and functional wise, to acquire the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM to cover the full range with 2 lenses, or to go straight to the Canon EF-M 18-150 IS lens and use only one lens.
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
I personally found the 18-150 a very useful lens.

Another informative review. Looking forward to learn your shooting experience. I am really leaning towards to have the M5+18-150mm to replace my old T3. Have a good trip.

My initial impressions are pretty favorable. There are always compromises with a superzoom, but this one handles them fairly well.

Dustin thanks for another well done review! I'm still holding on. I would love to see Canon put out a few more primes f2.8 to f4. Again well done.
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
You and me both! They seem pretty focused on consumer zooms than better primes. If you don't mind manual focus, though, the Samyang/Rokinon primes in the M mount are excellent.

Hello Dustin, i have recently aquired an M3 and have the 22 and 18 - 45 lens i am considering one of these lens as i would like to experiment with street/candid portrature which would you recomend, im leaning to the new 18-150 but the 55-200 is cheaper?
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
I think you will find the 18-150mm focal length more flexible for your purposes.
@cyalden17 жыл бұрын
Many thanks, i thinks its going to be worth the extra.

Hi Dustin, I'd been meaning to ask you which superzoom I should have, this ef-m 18-150 or tamron 18-200 DI III VC? Thanks...
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
+Alif Firdauzi That depends on your tolerance of size. The Tamron gives you a wider focal range and roughly similar image quality, but it is a fair bit bigger.

Hi Dustin, thank you for your great reviews, it's been a big help for me. I'm interested in the M5 as a video camera, but haven't decided yet. What are your thoughts on it's strength as a vid cam? I don't like some of the drawbacks of Sony, and the Xt2 is out of my budget. I shoot stills with the 5dsr so I have a few canon lenses. But would like a mirrorless body for video.

Great review, as usual! Have fun on your trip! Quick question - Irix (a new lens company) just came out with a 15mm f/2.4, and an 11mm f/4 (Manual lenses) - any chance you might review one of those sometime? Just wondering.

How does it rank as your favorite efm lens? Top what of the 7? Also have you experienced the shadow thingy I was talking about when you use this lens with the built in flash
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
I like it quite well, though some of my favorite lenses for the system optically are actually from Rokinon. I haven't noticed the issue you raised, but I don't use the flash very much.
@mbnvnd7 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott try taking a picture of your keyboard with a flash. I'll check Rokinon out I'm not that familiar with it yet, may I ask which specific model it is that you like the best? what about from canon's efm lenses do you like this better than say the 22mm? 11-22? 28? thanks! and also, great style of making these videos, I'm looking forward to your m5 review. not much out there
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
I shot a number of portraits with an additional flash without issue. I like all three of those lenses you mention quite a bit. They are optically excellent.

hope canon release a fast telephoto zoom for aps-c and mirrorless like a 55-150 or 55-250 f2.8..
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
That would be nice, but I think unlikely (particularly for mirrorless). They've most gone for light and compact for the system. It's been a LONG time since they have released any kind of premium lens for APS-C/.

thanks, when i return to the States i think i will look into this technology....Keeping up is exhausting!.....i finally mastered "back focusing" which i never knew existed this time last year, shows you how far i am behind......i dislike the idea of adopters because at the least if i paid for a 2.8 aperture it is now a smaller aperture with means i paid for something i did not get..........

Is there a lens hood?

Yes, but it doesn't come with the lens. It has to be purchased separately.

Thanks for this review, Dustin. I still shoot with the M1/Clearviewer combo, and have wondered about your opinion as to the functionality of the M5's EVF. Comments I've read describe it as "tiny". Is it any smaller than the Sony A6000's .39 EVF? Any other comments about it would also be appreciated. Thanks.
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
This is actually a pretty good EVF. Good refresh rate, and the ability to put a lot of different information/magnification options in there helps a lot.
@leojonkers31817 жыл бұрын
Nice review! No hood? The Canon M5 is a very interesting camera and a reasonable compact superzoom together with a EF adapter makes it maybe a camera and this zoom I going to buy.
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
Canon never includes hoods with any of its non-L-series lenses - one of my pet peeves.
@leojonkers31817 жыл бұрын
You are right, but you can buy them. Silly way of marketing.

Does the Canon EOS M5 uses the same Batteries as the Canon EOS SL1 and EOS M3?
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
Yes it does, and like the M3 the battery life is surprisingly good. Better than the rating.
@FinalLugiaGuardian7 жыл бұрын
That is good. I am glad I bought my canon sl1 dslr rather than the canon t5i. It would be nice to be able to get 60 fps on an A-PSC size sensor and not have to buy all new batteries again. Thank you.

My mac pro uses Aperture and iphoto and neither sees Raw files from my Sony cameras.....i must convert them to tiff then to Jpeg in order for them to be seen in this software, my mac pro computer is 8 years old and was the top of the line in it's time, 15inch, i.7, 8 memory i updated from 4, solid state hard drive........Also when i hit up the raw to my screen it takes several seconds for the Raw file to open, Jpeg opens instantly, do you have any advice on why i am having this problem?
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
Your software is outdated. Your cameras are more recent than your software, and the software lacks the RAW converter.
@howardkahn7176 жыл бұрын
YES, THATS because apple no longer supports aperture which i do not understand, i paid for aperture and several years ago they said they longer support this system, when i get back to the States i will call them up and ask them whats up.....Thanks again....

Hi Dustin, would you please review the new canon 70-300 mm nano USM. thanks a lot. it will be awesome if you provide some comparison shots with the Tamron equivalent or the older canon equivalent or the 55-250mm canon. thanks alot.
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
I will be reviewing that lens, though I can't guarantee the comparisons you mention.
@chirag47 жыл бұрын
hi Dustin, i bought the 70-300 IS II Nano-USM before 3 weeks, . . it is a good lens and i am enjoying it, though at 300mm (f/5.6) in lowlight, AF is an issue. Canon says that Nano is good for smooth/silent/quick focusing in video, and USM is good for Stills, but i would say the AF during stills is not as fast as Canon is claiming. (I am not a video guy.) If i had to buy a 70-300 all over again, i would spend 2.5 times the money by getting the L version (despite being over-priced), as it is Pro-grade, Metal build, Faster AF, better IQ lens. Would love to see 70-300 NanoUSM compared to the 70-300 L Thanks
@maxfactor42097 жыл бұрын
Chirag Parikh how about the sharpness and contrast in 300 end, is it any sharp compare to tamron 70-300 vc ?
@chirag47 жыл бұрын
i tried the Tamron Non-VC version once, but not the VC one, so can't compare. Canon's sharpness at 300 is good. I won't bother with that Tamron and get the Canon, despite Tamron being a good 50-100$ cheaper, and even if both were equal in IQ. Thanks for your question. Best of luck with whatever decide. I am waiting for Dustin's review like you too.

I think the M5 has an EIS that works for video only, not a 5 axis image stabilization!

It is a digital five axis stabilization, but yes, it is for video only (which I mention here).

You forgot to talk the most important thing: The aperture is horrible. f6.3......for shot video indoors, you must pull the ISO limits of the M5.
@DustinAbbottTWI6 жыл бұрын
I understand that, and you're right, but that is also the nature of any lens like this. It's not unique to this lens.
@luismiguelsilva99036 жыл бұрын
True. Like the almost M canon lenses. They only average for outdoors. They have so many EF and EF-S glass, ... for me the M lenses makes no sense. They can work on a mirrorless system that accepts natively the EF and EF-S glass without any adapter.
