Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS repairing the zoom and autofocus problems

I have this exact lens. It turned out that one of the screws from the lever came loose (rattling around in the lens) as well as that the lens brush was misaligned. I was able to fix it with the help of this tutorial, it was very helpful. Now the lens focuses properly. Thank you!

Thank you. For a while, I couldn't understand why it wouldn't zoom out completely. There was sometimes a little resistance and rattling. While inspecting the lens, a screw suddenly fell out! Sure enough, after dismantling it with the help of this video, it was indeed a lever screw. Strange that for all of Canon's engineering, that this is such a simple problem. But dismantling this "basic cheap" lens also helps me appreciate the engineering behind it so much more, Thanks again 👍👍

I took it apart and noticed that the 2 screws were not in place, now where can I find those 2 screws if I don't have them? What size are those 2 screws?

Shake the lens, maybe they are still inside. If you're lucky, you might buy those screws from ebay or aliexpress.

Thank you for this video. I'm having a problem with the newer 18-135mm Nano USM version of this lens. I cant seem to find any video on what could cause the focusing to stop working (AF+MF). The IS and Aperture still works so I assume the board is fine. Any thoughts? Thanks

I haven't repaired that lens before, but the flat cable could be broken, which is a quite common problem if the cable is moving while zooming. The other problem could be the ultrasonic motor, which (generally) can't be repaired, so change that and see if that solved the problem.

Hi, my lens can not focus at infinity when zoom over 100mm both auto and manual focus but it can focus objects at shorter distance (say

I would check the conductivity (if it is not broken) of the flat cable which is used for sensing where the zoom and focus of the lens. Those are the flat cables which the brushes running on. My other, easier to check idea would be to zoom to 135mm, and lift the front of the lens a little bit, and check if the lens can focus. The idea would be that the screws of the front lens element got too loose, and the front lens element is not perfectly parallel with the rest of the lens elements, and it causes distortions, and because of that, the autofocusing is not working.
