Cool video but, aren't the Metabones adapters just essentially changing/reducing the size of the Circle of Elimination size to fit the sensor on the four thirds cameras?

Thanks so much for your videos! I was on the fence between Canon and Sony, but finally after two weeks decided on GH5 w/external Atomos, Metabones, and a couple of lenses. Thanks dude!
@aleksejsbozinskis42105 жыл бұрын
Speed booster actually does "light/image compression". As we know lens aperture determines amount of light on the sensor's area. If we project all this light on smaller sensor, we get higher luminosity on area unit. Thus speed booster effect... Passive adapters hasn't light gathering element, thus we loose part of light and also part of image.

I've spent nearly USD 500 in the Metabones Speedboster and I have to say I could have saved that money. It works well only from f / 1: 4 to f/ 1:11. At f / 1: 2 or less to f / 1: 1.4 only works well in the center of the image. At the sides and corners is very, very soft and provides chromatic aberrations. The extra stop is useless and is better to spend that money on a good native lens. I am outraged that Brian Caldwell told me that the problem is the lens Canon FD 50mm f / 1: 1.4. It is incredible .....

Tom Antos Well I picked up my SpeedBooster S and ended up sending it right back. $600 to control the aperture and a extra stop is a lot of money. I have a lot of prime APS-C lenses with just a 1.25 crop and will only use them in low light wide open a $100 adapter makes more since to me.

Great video, subscribed :-) I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I just got a GH4 for mainly video use, now i don't own ANY glass at all. So the two options I'm looking at is either getting the Metabones Speed Booster along with the Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS Lens, Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 which would cost a total of $2,076 OR i could go with MFT lenses, the Voigtlander 10.5 f/0.95, Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95 and the Voigtlander Nokton 42.5mm f/0.95. Assuming the 10.5 Voigtlander will cost at least $999, that would make the MFT lenses come to $2,998. That is $900 more than the Speedbooster and the 3 EF lenses. Which option would you go for ?? Would you advise the speed booster for someone who doesn't have any lenses or would you suggest getting Voigtlander glass which even with the speed boosters help, none of those EF lenses i listed will drop to 0.95 like the MFT lenses. Your advice would be really appreciated, thank you.

RizHail The normal version is no longer sold since they replaced it with the S version... so in the new version S you can't connect to USD and you can't power it from an external source... the S version will only work with cameras that have an active M43 mount... if your camera has a passive mount then you have to get the Blackmagic metabones adapter which allows the external power connection via USB

god this looks lovely! i'm totally late to the speedbooster party, but i recently dropped my GH5 with it's 12-60 zoom on, and unfortunatly ruined the zoom (very very upset about this - panasonic are terrible for spares it seems, anyway....), luckily my gh5 was absolutly fine. So it means i can look for more glass, i'm thinking of going down the Metabones 0.71x + sigma DC 18-35 f1.8 art (EF mount). So basically if you already pre own the canon or nikon lenses then you should get an adapter, but if not wil the voigtlanders 17.5, 25mm, etc work? I mean you're basically getting only 1 extra stop of light from the adapter+canon lens. Im not saying its not worth it but I dont have Canon lenses lying around and the GH3 was my first camera. What makes me interested is the fact you said these lenses are more sharper with the adapter attached. Also, how does the crop factor work? I know if you have a 45mm with no adapter on the gh3 its equivalent to a 90mm but what if you have say a 50mm along with the adapter? Any help appreciated. I wish I knew about your videos a few years back when I first purchased my GH3.

Or should I consider the 24-70 f2.8?

Hey Tom, this is a great review yet it leaves me with one question. There were two clips in the test footage that had extremely bad chromatic aberrations (2:41 first clip branches against the sky; 4:10 last clip, street light behind tree). The 24-70mm costs $2k new, $1700used, while the Sigma is $750 used, with the Metabones speedbooster, it's now a $1350 lens, but still beats most $1500+ lenses! IMO it's still a great value, Max Yuryev used it in a wedding video, and it was sharp as hell! vimeo.com/103043835

So if i'm right, The typical calculation for MFT was by the factor of 2. example E-m10 using m.zuiko 45mm f1.8 would equate as canon FF using 90mm F3.6. Am I right? So if I'm using this speed booster on let say Sigma 35mm F1.5 art with e-m10 body it would retain the focal length and aperture at f1.4? so the DOF would be same as the sigma mount on FF. Am I right? If that so, I would need that adapter as i'm DOF freak.

Hey Tom! Can you explain to me what the difference is between the regular Canon adapter and the Canon "S" version? I know that with the S version, aperture is adjusted with the camera rather than with the jog-dial. Is this a plus? TIA
@Spencer63510 жыл бұрын
It looks like the canon to mft 's' version is an updated version that allows for image stabilization and is an active adapter. Pretty sure the older canon ef speedbooster is no longer being sold.
@TomMakesThings10 жыл бұрын
The "S" version is essentially the same adapter as the one I use in this video except the ability to use this with inactive m43 mount cameras like the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, has been taken away. I am guessing that is so that their Blackmagic m43 to EF adapter would sell better. It's sad that the new versions of their speedboosters for Canon EF lenses no longer supports exterior 5v battery connection and exterior aperture dial. So the "S" version will only work on cameras with ACTIVE m43 mount. Which is why I'm glad I got this early version which works on both the active and inactive mounts. Then again the new "S" version is a lot cheaper. It now retails for $500

Curious if this one works with bmpcc og. I know they made one just for the bmpcc but this one is cheaper.

Howd you fit the speedbooster onto a tripod? The foot of the speedbooster makes it impossible to mount onto a tripod

mrdbznarutofan1 I know exactly what you mean! On my speed booster, the foot can be removed by using a small Allen key and removing the two screws under the foot. After this you can pull the foot right off.
