I just took a few shots with my 10D yesterday. Fantastic colors and substance. I have found that limitations of this camera are actually a big plus, as it forces me to be more creative and use it in unusual ways. The result is either ratted shots, or shots far better than I expect. Overall, I always have memorable shots whenever I shoot with the 10D.

I originally acquired my own 10D as part of a nice deal with a lens included a few years ago where I was primarily interested in just the lens but I'm really glad I got the camera, too. It's a nice breath of fresh air to occasionally take a break from my more modern cameras and shoot with just the 10D for a little bit with how slowly the camera works when configured to save raw files because the lightning fast nature of newer cameras can get a bit boring after a while

The next model the 20D was my first DSLR (after four decades of film) , its on the shelf still in perfect working condition , took many great images on its 8mp sensor which happily go to A3 prints. The D series was legend.

Same here. I remember being soooo happy with the back screen on my brand new digital 20D. Instead of needing a Polaroid back and Polaroid film, here was an image just as good for free 😅 I love my 20D. I charged the battery, dusted it off, and it worked flawlessly (I hadn't used it for 15 years) I would advise anyone considering buying one today to go for a further-along model with a larger back screen

Same here. When I last used it I found it, I found the absence of video and limited setting options very liberating. There is much to be said for simplicity. The main problem I found with the camera was of course low light.

Thank you for your work, Gordon! I love the XXD series of cameras! Fun fact: This summer, I was invited to the Wedding of my best friend from school. They had a team of two photographers (Sony A7 IIIs) and one lady videographer (R6). I was a guest but couldn't resist taking my 50D + 24-70 2.8II, Speedlite, and 2 radio triggers with me. Long story short, the bride loved my photos way more than the ones from the paid photographers. (Im a portrait photographer with 15 years of experience) The newest gear is good, but oldish cameras, like in the video or those 30D and 50D, still make a fantastic photo tool. It's the limitations of your gear that help your creativity to shine! We just need to have hands that grow from shoulders, not hips. Regards from Kyiv!

I’ve had several canon DSLRs including a 50D, 7D, 5D (classic). Never got on with the 7D for some reason. The 5D is, well, a classic but my favourite was the 50D. It was the best of the double digits in my opinion, a great camera.

And yet, the 15 MP vs. 10 MP of the 40D only proved physically a very subtle resolution increase, only. I've had them all - EOS 10D up to 50D, back into it's heyday. The 60D sucked, because it was a #1 of these series - only (like the D60 as 10D precessor) again only a plastic build quality, and the joystick was gone, too. Into contrast, Nikon went "all-in" into 2010 - and presented the D7000 - with an alu-mag alloy body (partially) and 100% OVF - something, Canon only managed into the EOS 80D, many years after the D7000 into that class....but still, missing out the AF joystick hereby. Only the latest, EOS 90D from 2019 brought the AF joystick back into the 2-digit series.

I still have a 60D (2010) that I bought used in 2015, and I only replaced earlier this year (9 years later!). I sometimes grab it to snap pictures of my cats. It's a bit of a dinosaur in terms of specs but I feel right at home with that grip.

On the recommendation of the 40D, I would rather recommend the 50D. The two cameras might look entirely identical but the 50D is much nicer of a shooting experience especially in live view with its screen that's double the resolution of the 40D and the nicer live view functionality that it has, along with doing exposure simulation much better - at least in my experience my 40D always shows me exposure levels in live view that are quite far from what I get in the final picture which has never been a problem with my 50D. As a live view camera it definitely feels like the 40D could have used a little longer in the oven before Canon called it done

Still got a 10D, which works perfectly. It's worth so little now that I have no hesitation in slinging it into a pannier and getting it out on the bike, where more valuable gear might be at risk. The only downside is lack of cropping space, but meh, just compose properly. The 10D was the first modern era Canon I had, and the controls just felt amazingly useful and quite intuitive. So much so, that every digicam I've had since, I jig the layout to mimic the 10D as far as possible.
@cynaraos

It really feels like Canon struck gold with the 10D's design, not just in terms of the control layout which they'd never done in that way before that camera, but also the visual styling of it is perfect to me in a way it feels like they lost with the later two digit series bodies

This explains a lot about 60D! I remember upgrading from 600D to 60D in the hopes it would have a better viewfinder and lens autofocus correction. Needless to say, the upgrade was underwhelming: there was no AF correction, the viewfinder was only marginally better and the camera felt like it weighed a ton more for not a lot of added value :)

My wife's first camera was an EOS 60D she got in 2014 after the 70D released. She used that until she upgraded to an R6 in 2020. After that I got into video work live streaming hybrid work and church with the R6. We still have the R6, but I also got a smaller fun Lumix FZ40 after watching/reading almost every CameraLabs review on the Lumix FZ and Canon PowerShot lineups from that era. The FZ40 cost me $45 on eBay and has been loads of fun with its 600mm zoom and basic looking 720p video. But with manual video control, I still get some control over shutter speed and aperture that I cant quite match with the BlackMagic App on my iPhone. I'm pretty happy with my setup now with the R6 for "real" photo and video work, and my FZ40 and iPhone managing my more fun family photo/video duties. I may upgrade to an FZ200 at some point, or just just straight to an old used M43 camera in the future.

Sadly, my EOS-1ds ii has bitten the dust, or I'd still be using it! Today, it's an R and R7, and yeah, they're worlds easier to take a picture with, but so long as I don't crop in, and there is plenty of light, I don't think people could tell the difference if I snuck the 20D into my bag.

Very long story short(ish) had moved from Nikon to Canons in the mid 90's, had a Canon EOS 33 (what a bloody brilliant camera!) and EOS 5, plus the "holy trinity" of f/2.8 L zooms (17-35, 28-70,70-200, all purchased used) so ~mid late 2004 picked up a used D60 GAH APS crop my precious ultrawide became barely a normal lens) !!! Anyway used that for a couple of years until it got drowned in heavy monsoon rain shooting the Yamaboko Junko parade (part of Gion Matsuri) in Kyoto... it hung on for a few days then refused to turn on, a rushed visit to a local camera shop that had several used 20D in stock and very cheap (30D had been out for a few months so lots of trade-ins of 10D and 20D bodies) That got me through to the end of the festival just in time for the D60 to decide it was going to start working again (Bastard!!) Since then got a new 40D in mid 2007, which lasted me what seems like for ever (mainly as I'd bought a GF1 MFT camera for my everyday carry so the DSLR mostly sat unloved except for event photography). A 5Div was added when ~2018 when I got a good price on an ex display/demo model (which had less than 100 shots so ?buh? as to why they were letting it go so cheap) which became my main "not every day carry" camera (the old GF1 being replaced by a GX7 and G9). For a last Hurrah in DSLR acquisitions just last year had a 60D and 90D "handed down" to me from a young relative who couldn't get the "whole DSLR thing" and bought a Sony A7. Then ONLY this year decided to dip my toes in the new EOS R system, got a extremely lucky with a "as new" R7 for 2/3 retail price then later on a "as new" R8 for half price from the same "too much money" retired gent looking for a new hobby (works out his hobby is buying stuff for a new hobby... and then selling it cheap to fund his next hobby buy).... R7 is great, really only purchased it for my old vintage L series telephoto primes, the IBIS system and better than the 5D auto focus system has massively increased wildlife and sports keepers.. the R8 was purchase on a whim (I mean why not at half price) and for all its short comings its a bloody brilliant camera, honestly with that, the 16, 24 and 50 mm consumer primes its got all the makings of a perfect travel kit.

The Rebel took several seconds to start up and the 20D vastly improved that, along with a much more solid build and adjustability features. Then owned the 50D, 60D and 80D. Once the articulating LCD screen came out I knew I would never go back to the fixed version, and it looks like Canon agrees.

Bought my first DSLR - the 500D - more than 10 years ago. I can still remember watching Gordon's review of it at the time. Although I've shot mostly mirrorless for the past 6 years or so, I've actually gotten my hands on a pair of retro DSLRs this year: the 5D Mk 1 and the 50D (ending up with a nice lineup of 5D, 50D, 500D, along with a film 500N - guess I have a thing for the number 5 haha ). Although not a repair guy, I opened them up to fix some issues (one had a dislodged AF point LED patch, and the other a loose connection on a CF pin ) and now they both work fine. Even though the 50D is essentially a 500D in a better body, it feels so much better in hand and overall a bit snappier. And speaking of that, I absolutely love how these cameras were so fast to operate! You can press the shutter button to take a picture literally as soon as you turn it on! Anyway, nice retro review as always, and looking forward for the next one!

@stefanbalmus1659
@stefanbalmus1659 5 ай бұрын
@@DinoBytes It's probably not the unicorn. However, it does produce some lovely images and the JPEG colors are quite unique. I find it odd that not even Canon's own DPP software (at least not the current versions that I've used) can reproduce the SOOC JPEG colors when processing the raw files. I suppose at some point down the line they dropped the ideea of having a "filmic" look and went for a more contemporary one. Quite a shame if you ask me, since most of the time I can't resist editing the raw files to bring back some shadows or correct the exposure. On that note, I was pleasantly surprised that the dynamic range was not as bad as I expected. It's poor by today's standards but it's usable most of the time. My main gripes are the slow writing speeds to the CF making for slow review times and the small and dim lower display in the viewfinder. At any rate, it's a full frame camera under $200 which produces nice images. You can't really fault it. Cheers!

Yes, the canon 10D was my very first proper digital camera which I got used around 15 years ago! I couldn't afford more than 22-55mm and 28-80 lenses for it until I got an 80-200 if inexpensively. I saw and dreamt of a sigma 120-300 f2.8 lens for it. It focused very, very accurately and quickly though, so no complaints at all. Canon was quite ahead then, but nikon's D70 and later models had the same resolution. When nikon came out with the D300 and especially the D700 they really became serious competitors with image quality and canon had to struggle to keep up with sony's sensor technology.

I recently bought a 10D (£32 on MPB now) and took it to Perth with a 50mm. I enjoy using it, its a slower pace of photography. Currently using it with a 24-105 and they seem well suited, although a 28-135 might be more period correct with the styling

A nice trip down memory lane. I went from a Rebel G Film Camera to a D30, 10D, Rebel XSi (=450D in Europe), Rebel T3i (=600D), Rebel T6i (=750D), and 70D (after the T6i got wet and died). I didn't buy another big camera for about five years until the RP in 2020 and, soon after that, the R5 in 2021, which I use regularly (and have probably taken more pictures with the R5 than all the other cameras combined). I still have (someplace) my 340-Megabyte flash-size IBM hard drive that I bought with the D30 in 2000.

I own a 10D. I only Bought it, because I wanted to buy my friend a lens, and the seller refused to give me the lens alone, so I paid ~15 dollars for it. I also own a 20D, which blow me away, I bought is for the same reason, as the 10D (seller refused to give me the lens alone, that I wanted to buy), and the 20D is my hobby camera. I own 80D, R, R6, but when it's not a paid job, or not something extreme, like astrophotography, I use the 20D. That's a tank. I manage to drop it several times, the plastic is broken already, flash is not working, and some of the connections aren't working (thanks to a trip to a lake, at least my camera learnt how to swim), yet it still takes photos. I love these old DSLRs.

Nice one! I've actually never used one. From the xxD series I only used the 30D from my fire department, my nephew's 60D, my uncle's 70D and my personal 90D. The 10D looks pretty impressive though and the one you have seems to be in a great condition! Well... the 60D may first have looked like a downgrade because of the body material and one or two features it lost (was there something about micro focus adjustment?) but I actually like the swivel screen it introduced, which made the video capabilities actually pretty good!

I couldn't buy the Digital Rebel 300D fast enough, since I was just getting into astrophotography, and this camera had the lower noise C-MOS sensor tech. Looking back at those images, they are SO noisy, but at the time it was the best option to serve my interests. I graduated to the 30D a few years later and never looked back.

20D was my first DSLR - the one that convinced me to sell my film gear 😢 kinda regret that now! After the 20D came the 400D, then 100D, then a couple of M43 cameras (LUMIX GX8 and GM5) when I wanted to shed some weight for bushwalking. An interest in astrophotography got me back to Canon with a 6D, which I swear is still the best bang for camera and camera system available today. Worth a review in itself?

I waited for the 20D for my first dSLR. I used that for many years, had a 30D as a second body, but didn't like the 60D and went to 7D when I upgraded. Then back to the two digit bodies with 70D which was a really nice camera with articulated screen, a newish sensor, better live view and (I believe) first with Dual Pixel AF. Much better all round camera than the 7D in my opinion and even the 7D II in some areas. Olympus launched the E-M5 (Mk I) and Canon had the ridiculously bad (first generation) Eos M so I switched to MFT, but still use my last Canon - the 70D sometimes.

I've used 10D for a short while but never liked it. Yes IQ was good but autofocus performance was disastrous. I couldn't get image in focus no matter what. And back in those days there wasn't a system in place to confidently set manual focus. Now was that focussing issue due to camera's fault or was it on the lenses I've used, I couldn't tell. However, next year I got that 300D, together with that EF-s 18-55 lens, and that camera was marvellous, despite its limitations....

My first DSLR. Paid for with an especially good weekend of blackjack. I still own it and take it out for a spin once in a while and it's been years since it has been worth enough to consider selling. I also still have my FF 5D and IMO that is a much more usable camera in many regards. Still, the 10D is nice in its own way and for those that prefer a more "film" like image vs the hyper reality of many modern cameras I suppose it's worth a look. I wish it could mount EF-S lenses as I sold my 17-40 many years ago. I understand that a modified EF-S 24mm pancake is mountable but I haven't attempted. That seems like it would be a good match. Thanks for the look back!!

One may think Canon is German company, not Japanese. Why? There's not that much one can „like” about Canon cameras; they are solid and reliable - but rather boring - tools, that just do their job right. Just compare their cameras to Olympuses E-M, Panasonic's Lumices or Fujifilm cameras… That being said: got Canons too in my collection - 300D, 5D Mk II, 1D Mk II, 20D, 40D - and I like the picture and colours their sensors give. At least at ISO 100 their IQ is very good. But rather forget trying to take decent JPGs SOOC from Canons earlier than 40D. Their firmware is too primitive for that, even in case of „professional” 1D Mk II.
