Paid $12 CAD for a G2 back in 2019 and got free shipping which cost the seller $14. So they lost money. Put a battery in it. Works as good as new. Amazing camera.

The G2 was my second digicam. My first digicam was an Olympus C700, which had a super slow 10x zoom lens with a horrible chromatic aberration issue. The Canon was huge upgrade over the Olympus. I ultimately ended up selling the G2 and getting the EOS 10D and the rest is history lol. Love this series, Gordon. Keep it up

I worked at a camera store in 2002, and whenever we needed to grab a camera from the display case to shoot something around the store, with all of the different makes and models we carried to choose from, we nearly always grabbed the G2. The only times it wasn't the first choice was when we needed very close focusing or a longer focal length, something the G2 required time-consuming accessory attachments to achieve.

My first powershot was the A95. I progressed onto the G7, both of which i still have from new! These were massive upgrades to my first digital compacts that i had like the 1.3mp Fuji Finepix 1300! It really is crazy now, looking back on cameras seen as vintage when we were buying the latest and greatest at the time! I recently took out my G6 to some local events and loved taking photos with it, gorgeous little camera with everything I'd want in a retro digicam. I've mostly kept to using it as a point and shot (using PASM modes here and there) just to stay in the moment and relive the memories I had as a child growing up with CCD cameras. Thanks for the video, Gordon. Made me pull out my old G2 and start charging the cheap replacement battery, which probably isn't great anymore. I found the same CF card you use in my camera. This was a wonderful video! By sheer coincidence, I brought my G2 out of mothballs recently after purchasing it used - 20 years ago! For the whole of September I have been shooting with nothing else, and it has really sparked joy in my photography again. It's been over a decade since I last used it, and it is very different to my regular EDC camera - itself a vintage digicam (Lumix LX-7). It's been wonderful capturing the world in Canon colours (that really is a thing, isn't it?). Definitely going to use the G2 more often in future. I've nicknamed it The Silver Brick.

Although I have been an ardent fan of Nikon photography equipment for 13 years, the Canon G series delights me, I even unexpectedly have 4 of their models in my collection (G2, 5, 6 and 12), amazingly well-thought-out cameras. But still, the G2 is "toomuch" retro, slow and I lack resolution (Our national social network supports photos in 5mpx resolution). My favorite is probably the G6 - the fastest, the most accurate and holds great in the hand. I think you will agree that it can be called the last in the classic series, after it, something strange and wrong began to happen.

@@DinoBytes I can see for myself how the secondary market is going crazy around the G12, the price of this model reaches $300-350 (and it is bought!), while the neighboring 11 and 15 barely reach half of this price. That is, even the more modern G15 is not wanted so much.

@@ToddJacksonPhotography I've seen some cameras do this. It's possible the sensor has broken entirely, or there's something wrong with the live view. Try blindly taking a photo and see if it playsback on screen, or if there's a working file on the card when you read it.

I’m fascinated to know what will be the CCD sensor of the future - the tech people refuse to accept has been surpassed. Will we suddenly decide that they don’t make IBIS like they did in the 2020s, or that actually rolling shutter is retro and really desirable?
@DinoBytes
@DinoBytes 2 ай бұрын
Ha ha ha! I know what you mean. I don't believe CCD is the holy grail many people think it is. It's just a bit different, and sadly in many cases worse as the tech has deteriorated over time. I think the clamour to get a Fuji X100V has ignited the whole compact camera market. Like you say, cameras like a Canon G16 (which you could bag for a hundred quid a few years ago) are going for 300-400 quid today. That's just ridiculous, considering you can get an immaculate 5D Mk2 body for that sort of money, and I just grabbed a 5D "classic" from MPB for £200. I can't justify spending more on an old Compact camera than a 5D mk1, because no "vintage" compact can match a 5D with a nifty-fifty on it.

I bought the original 5D and loved it at the time, but I feel it's become a bit of a unicorn, with people's expectations and memories being a bit higher than perhaps it deserves. I'm going to buy one and retest it to see if it lives up to its current expectations! I recall the sensor being noisier than I expected and the screen being quite dim, but we'll see! Equally though, you're right, it's still going to thrash any digicam!

@@DinoBytes no, unfortunately too many cameras. The camera that would take its place is my Ricoh GR3.

I remember these G series cameras were quite well regarded among Macro photographers. Its a shame these high end compact cameras have almost all died out in recent years with now only Leica, Fuji and Ricoh still putting any effort into making fixed lens compacts while Sony(RX) seem to be on their way out and Canon completely abandoning the segment.

Yeah, it's amazing how the demand isn't being addressed. That said, the recycler in me does like seeing loads of old digicams enjoying a second or third life!

Great video as usual! It is surely a coincidence, but the dancing people in the video somehow match the music 😂 16:22 you say it, my man, you say it. It took me a while to get some older cameras for reasonable prices, not like 300 € for a Sony F707...like some for real wanted 🙄

Thanks! I was photographing the sunset while about a hundred people were having a silent disco around me! PS - yes, it's about patience these days, I have alerts on eBay set for all the models I'm after and eventually one appears at a reasonable price.

Yes, the alerts are useful, often however one still must be very quick with highly demanded models. I once saw an Sony F828 with no accessories offered for 160 €, I tried several more reasonable price offers, but the seller declined. After several reposts he sold it for 89 € to someone else, lol. I got a much better deal later, 84 € for a F828 with several cards, flash, IR lamp, charger, bag and book.
