They're pretty much the same. I both love these cameras. And I believe photos depends on the photographers not on cameras. Cameras don't take pictures, photographers do. Cameras are just tools. Just go around and enjoy taking pictures. Photography is really fun :)

I know that this is an older video. But I've been browsing some photography videos talking about various lenses. Kind of crazy that the D5100 is now what...12 years old? I started with the D5100 and it's what I learned in college while getting my bachelor of science in Graphic Design. I still use the camera to this day. I even took it with me to Ireland in 2018 and got some amazing once in a life time shots.

+Truong Nguyen actually for the most part Nikon is known to have warmer colors and Canon is generally neutral tone. I think just in this case it was the opposite, but generally between the two Nikon has the warmer colors. I noticed it when I had a D80 and notice this with their full frame low cost DSLR's. The other exception to Canon is the 7D, it's very contrasty and not neutral

I have used Canon and Nikon for the rest of my photographer life. And I found out the differences between the two. When taking pictures, Canon capture it so dramatic. While Nikon capture it with full of emotions, full of life. When it comes to video filming, Canon is the best thing you can use. Clearer and smoother than Nikon. Experiencing Nikon's video is not so good as Canon's. Better to use a phone's video instead of Nikon. Just saying'. But all in all, I'd say that Nikon takes pictures better than Canon. But still Canon can take pictures like how Nikon do, but in a dramatic way. But Canon takes videos and films way better than Nikon.

If I were to photograph the moon with a 300mm (becoming 450 with crop sensors) and then crop the image to fill the image with the moon, is more mega pixels better for that? Or does it still not matter?

+TheDyingFox Probably ,as a guess, you need a camera with very good low light / high iso performance, meaning full frame, next you need a low aperture lens, next you need a remote shutter release. just look up astrophotography or night photography or something like that.

So what I meant was: If I have two identical cameras exept one is 16mp and the other is 24, would I get "more moon" in the final result if I fill the final cropped image with the moon (or other subject).

If the camera is from 2 different brands then possibly no because a 24mp in nikon might not be the same quality as 24 mp in canon depending on the sensor technology. What your asking is the pixel density of the sensor, within the same brand and assuming the senor is denser in a higher megapixel camera yes a larger megapixel should give you more moon given the same lens. Denser sensor means smaller detectors to pick up more light, i think its called photons or something like that.

TheDyingFox if you were talking about a crop sensor versus a full frame the determining factor is still sensor density, whichever is denser per inch i think is how theyre measured, how sensitive they are to picking up light. Im not explaining it well but its easier to recommend a specific camera and lens than to explain it, again google is your best friend here.

I started out with a T3i about 15 months ago, with almost no knowledge of DSLRs at all. I own the T3i and recently I had a chance to play with the Nikon D5100. At first glance they appear very similar, As soon as I grabbed the Nikon to check the swivel screen, it was lighter. The construction of the D5100 seems flimsier, the Canon is more solid. The free availability of Magic Lantern was the reason I went with the Canon. The two together make a film camera equal to those that cost $3-4000 or more, and the 4-2-0 luma / chroma ratio is the best you can dream of at this price.

I can recommend both for you, but It's up to you for the decision because it's what suites you.. :) the key factors should be: 1. Price 2. Comfort in the hands 3. Ease of use.. I have used both and I say that I really like them both, but for me I sealed the deal with a 600D because it fits my hand properly and the button placement is really nice for me, the D5100 was also a good camera, but I didn't choose it because I found the grip quite small.. but I did enjoy the experience..

Does anyone knows why I need to press twice the shooting button when using the viewfinder? If I shoot only through the live view,I press once normally. If I change to Viewfinder, I press once, and then I need to press second time after the time I want, creating a long exposure photo. i used to be in ur situation, but finally i figured out the best choice for me. If you gonna shoot a lot of video, go for D5100 bc it has the flip-out screen which gonna come in handy when it comes to shoot at tricky angles If slow motion video is VERY IMPORTANT to you then go for the d3200 because it can shoot 720p at 60fps which is ideal for slow motion video. I chose the D3200 because i wanna get used to shooting without flippy screen and do slow mo videos(pro dslrs dont have flippy screen)

What Kai says to pick is what he would use. Most people misunderstand reviews and get the camera they like. A review is basically a review of the cameras [hence the title] and saying the different priorities: take this for example, the Nikon D5100 can't change the aperture in video mode, while the Canon 600D can. If you're into video, the canon 600D is probably the better choice for you.

To me, yes it is a good dslr camera for beginners to understand how to use dslr for their first time. I recently brought the 60d because i already know the basic on how to use ISO.shutter speed, and aperture. Plus it's my first dslr i own. So Yes i recommend you get the t3i for video/film with the TECHICOLOR cinestyle color grading to help you get that film look. Also with the cinestyle added to your T3i you can take photo's to help you get that nice color grading you want. Ask me for more Q's!

But after watching this video, I have since decided to give it a try on these few models of DSLR cameras to buy from: D5100 D5000 D3200 and Canon 600D Judging based on my level of knowledge and experience, which one would you recommend? As I love taking both photos and videos, in which Canon here is indeed the winner.
