I picked my 80D up last week.. I have been completely impressed with this camera. I was not expecting this much of an improvement in image quality. The massively reduced color noise in the shadows was the first thing that jumped out at me. Followed by being very impressed with the improvement in ISO performance. I also took it to take some long exposure photos with a Hoya NDX400 9 stop filter, just after sunset and it would still autofocus without any issues. Which blew my mind as I would normally have to remove the filter to focus and then put it back on. So yea, glad I did purchase it.

This is one of the best reviews I have come across of the 80D. It goes over some of the truly technical functions that have been upgraded. Not the basic stats you can look up online with someone commenting "hm, yea it is better with 45 AF points". Thank you!

I've had mine for a week or so now and compared it extensively to a Nikon D810 and and I'm impressed with the things discussed in this video. Low light focusing and the ability to deliberately under expose and recover in post is fantastic. I shoot zero video so I can't speak on that. Really happy with it.

It may sound like a sleeper feature on paper but in practice dynamic range is a big deal. Im starting to have faith in Canon again. I switched over to Nikon because their sensors had this amount of dynamic range already. Everyone has their own opinion, but dynamic range is very important to me. I'm all for getting everything right in camera, but when I'm in a pinch I love having the liberty to simply shoot a bit underexposed and not worry about loosing detail/adding grain. If the next 5D has this amount of dynamic range, I'll probably consider switching back :) I love both brands nonetheless.

Just a quick observation that has prevented me from upgrading from a 20D to a 70 or 80D is that I use the Canon Timer remote cable release and the other 3 pronged remotle cable release which I can't use with either of these cameras. Such a small detail for many, but it prevented me from upgrading to either of these models.

Great review Ted! It would be great if you can cover "ISO Invariance" in a future episode for folks who like to nerd out on camera tech from time to time. -- ISO is the most misunderstood subject, especially in digital technology. I personally view digital ISO as the amplification of what the camera actually captures at it's base, similar to how sound systems use the term "gain" when turning up sound volume. I think it would be so much easier to understand ISO if manufacturers used the term "Image Gain," rather than ISO, for digital cameras. ISO (or film sensitivity), is more relevant to film cameras, since there is an actual difference in physical light sensitivity in different film stock. -- Thanks, and keep up the good work!
@77appyi8 жыл бұрын
+VeloRydr why..it will not make a scrap of difference what you call it ..it will work just the same The iso or gain or volume or pixies..as long as it doubled up with each increment to key in with shutter and F stops it not matter ..in fact a like pixies ...my Canon has a base pixie of 1 pixie but i can extend it down to 0.5 pixie..but gets a bit noisy at 6 pixies and over ..the new Nikon D5 is silly at 12.5 pixies

There has been a lot of talk about doing ETTR to increase that dynamic range. Overexposing a stop, or so. Would you say that that technique is no longer valid for the 80D? We should underexpose instead to get that maximum dynamic range possible with the sensor chip?
@dangerpowers1238 жыл бұрын
I own a Canon 6D which is about the same price new as the 80D so it makes for an interesting choice if you don't own either and want a decent DSLR. I expect the focusing and dynamic range etc are all better on the 80D. But then the 6D is full frame and thus better in low light etc...
@improver18498 жыл бұрын
Great point, Steven. 6D is a fantastic cam, especially at it's recent prices. The 6D will take Getty quality photographs with relative ease, whereas the 80d most certainly will not. The 80D really shines for video due to Canon's excellent dual pixel AF. Especially for one man bands, such as vloggers, the 80d is the cam to get. 6D better for bokeh-licious B Roll. It's beauty shots trounce the 80d. For people who take mostly still photos, the 6d is a much more natural choice.
@sl26086 жыл бұрын
I have owned both the 6D and the 80D and I have been totally blown away by the clean, beautiful, noiseless images from the 80D in low light at high ISOs. As good and sometimes better than any low light images from my 6D! The 80D is amazing!

@cooloox7 жыл бұрын
At base ISO the 80D is much better. The 7D Mk II still uses Canon's older sensor technology and suffers from increased noise as you move the shadow recovery slider. The 80D introduces a lot less noise and can bring back a lot more detail at the same time.

Not sure if i should get the 80d (i love the flip screen) or spend the extra money on the 6d for the full frame sensor. Thoughts?
@Andy-lw6pe8 жыл бұрын
I'm absolutely new to photography and anything connected to it. I have recently purchased a canon g7x to learn a bit how this world works and I have noticed one (strange?) thing. Whenever I flipped the camera to vlog or take a selfie I noticed that both the video and the photos change from what I see in the flip-up screen. for instance, if an object is on the right while I'm filming, when I get back home and watch the footage on my pc (or even if I check it right after on the camera screen), that very same object is on my left. Since the only time this does not happen is with the Snapchat or Instagram camera app, I'd like to know if it's something that happens with all the cameras, or just with mirrorless camera. If so, a DSLR would "fix" the problem ? (and by fixing it I mean recording the exact same way I see things on the screen). Hope I made myself clear and thanks in advance for taking time to reply.
@raytracemusic7 жыл бұрын
I have also just recently got one and the shadow performance is pretty amazing to the extent that Camera Store TV surmised that Canon have maybe on purpose biased the sensor to underexpose (certainly relative to my old 550D) on purpose as highlight recovery doesn't seem to be as strong as shadow recovery.

That was interesting. Never thought of that enhanced dynamic range but it's exactly what I am looking for. Thanks for the good work. Just one short note: All reviewers of the 80D always compare it to the 70D. What about folks coming from a more consumer orientated camera like 100D or 700D. And how does it compare to the 760D? Similar specs, half the price.
@cooloox8 жыл бұрын
It focuses way better in low light than the 760D. It's dual pixel AF is a lot better than the Hybrid CMOS AF III of the 760D. At high ISOs the 80D has around half the noise of the 760D, maybe less than half the noise. It has 7fps compared to 5fps, a brighter pentagram compared to a penta-mirror, 100% coverage viewfinder compared to 95%. More AF options, some weather proofing. Far better dynamic range, and much larger battery, etc. Basically, it's twice the price and twice the camera.

There really is no perfect camera out there. But after watching many diff. videos, i've come to the following conclusion (referring to the video aspect): -sony a7s II is the king of low light, but the colors out of the camera suck big time-unless u like green/yellow skin tone -panasonic gh4 (and maybe gh5 too-time will tell) has issues with focus -canon does not offer 4k, but is king when it comes to autofocus and it also renders good color out of the camera -fujifilm xt2 is great camera for stills-it renders the best jpegs out of camera, having various film simulations....although theyve made improvements for video, im still not convinced its a great choice for doing serious video work (due to af and lack of is) As such, its all a matter of what is important to YOU-THE SHOOTER.

*Does 80D have a continuous AF in photo mode like 70D has?* E.g. the camera still tracking your face (right until the picture is taken) with 10sec timer already counting down. Very useful for distant selfies and making thumb-pics for YT videos if you are a one-man videomaker like me. But I haven't seen "Continuous AF" in menu in all these reviews. So what's the 80D behaviour?
@kevink22076 жыл бұрын
It has it but under a different name. AI SERVO.
@PaulKretz6 жыл бұрын
+Kevin K 70D has both Continuous AF and AI Servo. What's the story?
@kevink22076 жыл бұрын
I am thinking you are talking about the AF method and then the AF mode. Two different things. The AF method has face tracking/continuous option. Then I hit Servo on my AF mode. Does that clear it up?
@PaulKretz6 жыл бұрын
So Servo in photo mode works continuously on its own (like in video mode) or just when the half-shutter is pressed (like on SL2)?
@PaulKretz6 жыл бұрын
*I figured it out on 70D* : with the default settings the half-shutter fixes the AF on the subject and pressing the shutter all the way takes a picture. BUT if you disable half-shutter AF (over Custom Functions) and leave it just for metering (use back button AF-ON if needed instead), then you can enable Continuous AF (in the menu) and use just shutter full press to shoot. This allows to start a timer (2\10sec) with full shutter press (avoiding AF subject fixation) and the camera continues to search and track subjects! This way you can *move in front of the camera while the timer is ticking out and the AF will continue to track your face until it actually shoots* ! Very cool to shoot yourself as you can recompose eframe your position and posture with the timer already counting down! So I wonder *if it works on 80D?* For instance, my little SL2/200D has NO continuous AF in photo mode (only during video), and no Custom Functions shutter button override, so you can't do this trick.

According to DxOMark, the 80D has 13.2 EV's of DR at base ISO (Canon's current flagship APS-C DSLR the 7D Mark II only about 11.8!) the 5D Mark 4 is only slightly better at 13.6 (I was expecting more than that from a FF camera) But both are beaten by Nikon's APS-C D500/D7500 and D7200 with 14 and 14.6! EV's at base ISO respectively. So Canon still has a ways to go yet...maybe with next years rumored 90D, 7D Mark III and 5Dr Mark II they'll level the playing field? Here's hoping...

I have the 80D and i find that the 10-22 isn't as great in auto focus in low light as the stock 18-135 micro usm. also i have a 17-55 f2.8 and this is also not a great in low light focus, I bring a flash light at night, shine the subject, get focus and then take the picture. =)
