Can you do a video on doing wedding reception tips and trick with eos r? What video setting would you use with c log? So you dont want it at 400 at the reception?
@TonyMellinger4 жыл бұрын
Ah yea. Lots of great tips that could be had with wedding videography. It’s so hard for me because I’m always running full speed on wedding day. I’ve tried before but never have been able to make a video. I could potentially make one and use footage from a previous wedding though. As far as the reception itself, i do use Clog until things get really dark, say open dance floor. I’ll push my LOG footage up to 12,500 on the EOS R6 and still get useable footage. I will capture both LOG and also not using LOG in case the LOG footage doesnt look good though.

Great video! This is very helpful for me to learn C log shooting with my EOS R. I tested the C-log in bedroom under low light. For the curve peak to be shown in the middle of histogram, I had to turn ISO up to over 10k. Does it sound right to you? I’m using the RF 24-105 lens so the brightest aperture I could use is f/4. I also set the shutter at 1/50. Should I slower down the shutter to 1/25? Would it work for 24fp FHD shooting?
@TonyMellinger4 жыл бұрын
Hmm that seems pretty dark if you’re at 10,000. If you’re shooting 24fps, set your SS to 1/50, f4 and iso as low as you can. I’d suggest opening up a window or using some lights to help bring the overall level of light in the room higher. That will push down your ISO. Hope this helps!

Question please: I'm used to shooting pictures at about -1 on the light meter. Is it okay to still shoot videos as well slightly under exposed using C Log? Or should videos never be shot underexposed like pictures? Not sure if C Log ruins videos easier if shot any bit underexposed due to being such a flat colored video. Reason i usually shoot a little under exposed is to not have the sky blown out. Thanks!
@TonyMellinger4 жыл бұрын
Shooting underexposed works really well for photos. You protect your highlights and then raise the shadows in post. The problem with that in video is when you raise the shadows it adds ugly noise. @TonyMellinger4 жыл бұрын
Are you using these cameras for Photo or Video? I’d probably suggest getting the R6. The EOS R is great But I’ve noticed the R6 handles the low light of a wedding quite a bit better and the AF is seriously night and day. I thought the AF was good on the EOS R and then used the R6. Why set shutter speed at double the frame rate again? I've been ignoring this rule FOR YEARS but am starting to see my footage isnt the best in harsh lighting, and am wondering if this is why. THANKS!!
@TonyMellinger2 жыл бұрын
The shutter speed has to do with motion blur. If you crank your SS, you just will have more of a jittery image. If it’s too low, it will look extra blurry. I’ve mostly noticed it’s a problem when your slow down 60fps footage. It looks really choppy. If it doesn’t bother you, why change. As far as harsh lighting, that’s probably a sensor thing. Sensors can only handle so much. Best thing to do is make the lighting less harsh haha! LOG footage has helped with this.

Great explained man👍🏻 I was researching but haven't found the right answer yet- will I benefit in terms of color grading in DaVinci when recording in rec. 2020 instead of bt. 709 even though I'm going to edit and deliver on an 8bit Monitor? My thoughts behind this are the same as 8bit and 10bit- ofcourse I can not see the 10bit data on a 8bit monitor but my source file is 10bit data so I can grade more precisely- so is it similar in case of bt. 709 and bt. 2020? I assume that the reference to 24fps relates to the screen refresh rate on NTSC televisions? For the users in Europe where we use PAL where the screen refresh rate is 25fps, we can set our cameras to 25fps for the same effect?
@TonyMellinger4 жыл бұрын
Yea if you are shooting for PAL, you shoot in 25 FPS. I do know quite a few people in Europe who still shoot in 24fps though. Is it bad to go down to 100 on ISO? Do you move the shutter speed? or the aperuture.. in that case what would you do? thanks! great video!
@TonyMellinger4 жыл бұрын
Hey! It kind of depends what I’m shooting. The correct answer is to raise your aperture. That could get up to like f22 or something if it’s super bright. Lowering your ISO would give you grain as if you were at 800 or 1000 if it were too dark. It won’t be too bad, I would def start with lowering the ISO and then slower raise the aperture until it’s properly exposed. The best thing to do is pick up an ND filter. It’s kind of like sunglasses for your camera. I just made a video on them by the way.

I would like to see how you grade a log footage. So far I have used Canon C-log profile in Resolve and at time of shooting I expose for the sky and in post I want lift up the face well so it doesn't look too dark it gets tedious to get to a balanced exposure. How would you go about such a challenge?
@TonyMellinger4 жыл бұрын
Basically if I am shoot with cinema cameras (c100mkii or c200) and I need to match this footage, I will use the EOS Original. If I am trying to match DSLR shot in a picture profile (1DXii, 5D4, other eos r footage shot in a picture profile) I will shoot in neutral. I’ve found it’s easier to match those types of footage appropriately. As far as exposure, it would be nice to have a little more dynamic range. I find I slightly overexpose the sky and then I can bring down the highlights a bit and bring up the shadows and find a happy medium. My suggestion is keep playing and figure out how far you can push the footage in grading. I think you’ll get the hang of what is possible and the best scenario for you.
@martinekwall46714 жыл бұрын
@@TonyMellinger Ok, that makes it easier for you with those two cine cams. My experience is that EOS Original is more neutral and require tad bit more dialing in the right colors as it is so neutral. That makes it also easy to work with if colors are saturated. Neutral I experience I have to change hue and saturation on as saturated colors becomes to saturated.

Hi tony, do you have any tips on how to solve this? I tried lighting up my subject, while creating separation In the background by leaving the background completely dark. Theres a lot of grain in the background. How should i solve this scene? Thanks for the help!
@TonyMellinger4 жыл бұрын
A really good way to create separation from the background is to add a “hair light” on the subject. Place a light on the back of the subject (out of frame of course) and then and more light on your background. Once you’re in post processing you can darken your background if it’s too bright but you won’t have any noise then.

Do you mean if you are recording a TV screen? Or on the recorded image. Are you shootings in the use? You may need to try shoot in PAL if you are in specific countries. Then you would be at 50fps, 1/100 for your shutter speed. It has to do with the frequency of the power being sent to the lights. I had trouble with that when I was in Africa.

I don’t use LUTs really. If anything I’ll use a creative finishing LUT in an adjustment layer but lower the percentage of the adjustment to control its intensity. @@TonyMellinger This is interesting...I’ve stayed away from the R6 because of the warm cast I see in all the video footage online. Does this little WB tweak remove that completely or is it baked in as a characteristic of the camera? It’s not something I’ve seen in footage from the R or from the R5.

As always, it's great to revisit previous content as a refresher. I've been hearing that to get the best results in C-LOG, we should probably expose either at "0" or "+1". To overexpose to "+!", does that mean we bump up the ISO or does that mean we bump up exposure compensation? Thanks.
@TonyMellinger3 жыл бұрын
ISO is the best way to raise your exposure. Or open up that aperture if possible.
@ofthewayministries3 жыл бұрын
@@TonyMellinger Ok. That makes sense, just how you would normally expose, just over-expose slightly. How are you liking your R6?!? I'm thinking about making that same move, but am a little concerned about the editing workflow. I watched your other video, and others regarding proxies and whatnot... Do you know if the R6 uses the h.265 for 10bit HD, or is h.265 only used for 4K footage? Or is all 10bit using h.265 and all 8bit is using h.264? Is it right for me to assume that if I shoot in 8bit, that the editing workflow would then be similar to what I'm already doing on the R? Thanks for your help.
@TonyMellinger3 жыл бұрын
@@ofthewayministries yep, just over expose slightly. Anywhere fro 1/3-1 or so. The more you do it, the more you know what the camera can handle it. I love the R6 and the R5. Honestly for me, the R6 is the best camera out there right now. As far as the footage, if you shoot in LOG, it’s H265 and you make a proxie. If you dont shoot in LOG, the footage is very workable, but you loose the 10 bit. It’s a solid upgrade in every way possible. I dont even consider the 30MP vs 20 a problem, i have no problem at all with the 20.
@ofthewayministries3 жыл бұрын
@@TonyMellinger Oh, ok. So all CLOG footage is 10bit (h.265)? There's no 8bit CLOG as what we had with the R? It seems like h.264 is only associated with 8bit (4k/FHD). Am I understanding that right? So if I shoot (for now) 8bit with a regular color profile, then that would be h.264, which is the normal process. But if I go CLOG or HDR in any way, then I'm getting into the 10bit (h.265) arena and will need to use proxies. Correct? Or, use an external recorder, which is able to record in ProRes. Correct? Thanks.

Do you shoot 4K on this camera or you stay at 1080p because of the crop on 4K?

I use 1080 because I like 60fps for all of my Broll and the 1080 footage looks so good! I don’t mind the crop, but I’m used to cinema cameras and they’ve got a super 35 crop too. The bigger drawback for me with the 4K is the large file sizes.

Thanks for the video. One question though. When I shoot in log, I usually use the meter to set the exposure. I set it to 0. When you set the histogram to the middle the exposure meter went to +2. Does this mean my footage has been under exposed.
@TonyMellinger4 жыл бұрын
Those are good observations. My recommendation is to find out what works for you. I’ve found it’s somewhere in between 0 and 2 depending on the situation and lens I’m using. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll know when your footage is properly exposed.
@jmich51234 жыл бұрын
Tony Mellinger Tony, I will experiment next week when my R arrives but perhaps you know, when in log what does meter = 0 mean? Nominal for the linear interpretation of the pixels or nominal after CLog transformation has been applied? Sorry if I’m confusing the subject here... considering your test footage shown, what did your ‘meter’ show pre and post exposure comp to bring up the low end?
@NickMirro2 жыл бұрын
@@jmich5123 The burning question! I'm beginning to doubt the meter when shooting log. I've always heard that you should overexpose Canon log 1. There is huge detail loss in low light with log 1 unless you more or less ignore the meter. Correctly exposing as Tony recommends produces results closer to how my eyes see the subject.
@jmich51232 жыл бұрын
@@NickMirro I have the R5 now and it’s easier to understand with both CLog and CLog3. The histo is reflecting the log values and in the case of Clog3 my approach has been to keep the low stuff up over the 20% bar. Using this approach Clog3 is ‘better’ to me in that it seems to keep the highlights tamed below saturation much better than does CLog. I’m no cinematographer so anyone who wants to critique go for it. I simply want to get better, not be the definitive opinion…. Thanks for all the insight!!
