I think that's part Canon's fault, they made this camera come with headline video features which unfortunately don't live up to the hype in the real world due to the overheating issues. That being said when shooting short clips and stills i'd dare say the R5 may very well be the best camera ever released. Certainly the biggest leap forward for Canon in both stills and videos ever.

I don't even think they know what 10bit 4.2.2 means(what is it?). newbies are watching too many KZbin videos of people peddling videos when most just take pictures. I mean really a7s3 is awesome on low light, whoopdedoo but 12mp? They can sing its praises all day but not many are going to buy it.
@NeXMaX4 жыл бұрын
@@bert671 People who are actually buying either the R5 or the a7Siii would know their needs and decide which is more suited for their purposes. I really doubt serious buyers are buying the R5 as a video camera and the a7Siii as a stills camera because those aren't their intended purposes. Canon marketing might have trumpeted the R5's video specs a bit much pre-launch but it doesn't really change the reality that the R5 is really a stills camera first and foremost. Which makes it even more of a shame that its capabilities as a still camera has been left behind in all the video hype and subsequent controversy. With all that said, I completely understand why Canon marketed the video features. You can't really hype a camera in 2020 just on stills alone unless it's a highly specialized tool. Given that the R5 is Canon's flagship, it makes sense that they would also want to market the video aspects and bring attention to it. Besides, "12FPS at 45MP" doesn't sound nearly as exciting on marketing material as "8K video".
@1barnet14 жыл бұрын
@@NeXMaX Honestly 45mp at 12 fps is a headline feature exceeding the legendary status of the D850 WITH THE GRIP and Boost mode on. That combined with the best dual pixel AF implementation yet and one of the best high ISO performance of any camera makes this a sports shooters dream. I think Canon focussed their marketing wrong given the limitations of their hardware.
@NeXMaX4 жыл бұрын
@@1barnet1 For us still shooters, that is most definitely a headline feature alongside the much improved DPAF system. Unfortunately, it doesn't have that same universal "cachet" as 8K video. Market a camera with a 12FPS burst at 45MP and you'll get some raised eyebrows, but market a camera with 8K and you'll get not just raised eyebrows but a lot of keen stares. So I understand why Canon chose to highlight 8K video recording as a main feature in the prelaunch but with information coming out lately even from Gordon, it seems like it's more of a novelty than something that will see regular use.

THANK YOU GORDON! This is the review I've been waiting and hoping for since the announcement of the R5. I completely understand everyone's concern about the video aspects, but the R5 in my opinion is a stills camera with great video features. As a stills shooter, I feel the chat around video has completely ruined the rollout for the R5. I pre-ordered mine from BH on day one and STILL have not received my unit yet. Again, I understand the frustration but the release has turned into a PR nightmare for Canon and I believe it's pushed back the delivery of units. There have even been rumors that restocks might not happen until November which I hope are not true. I'm a full-time photographer that sold my gear to upgrade to this system and this delay has made me lose a bit of faith in Canon. BH customer service dodges any questions about delivery dates which has been even more upsetting ( This will be my last BH purchase for sure). Again, Gordan thank you for putting out real helpful information for us still photographers making very pricey decisions IN the middle of the pandemic who hope to still BE photographers on the other side of this. Personally, I wouldn't really pre-order stuff until they are really ready in stock. Mostly because it means there will be some members of the general public who will use the production units and could give feedback on early use and even potential issues to make a note of that may not be apparent in reviews. And yeah, wouldn't advise selling your gear before the new stuff arrives, especially for a hyped new product that arrives in the midst of a pandemic, which wrecks havoc on supply chains, which is probably what is causing the delay.

Excellent work, Gordon. You are a reliable source of camera info, a true asset to the industry. I have been out with my r5 four times, and your review is a bit ahead of where I am at (I can't find many flying birds around here in SC right now), but in every other way, your review reflects my experience with the r5. I shot with the 1DX3 about 3 weeks ago and find the r5 to definitely be a better experience for my needs. I think Canon has done an outstanding job with the r5! I would not be more pleased. I do like splitting the photography and videography features into separate review because there is a lot to unpack in a camera like the r5. I do plan to do short-form video with mine once the heat goes away, so I am very interested in hearing your review of the video features. Also, I am wondering just how different the r5 will behave in summer (95deg F here) and in winter (28 deg F in Feb)...I expect a very different set of experiences there. Thank you!

23:38 I couldn’t agree more. Great review as always, Gordon, awesome that you focused on stills in this part of the review. I was happy with my EOS R but this R5 is a massive upgrade over that body. I’ve paired it with my 28-70 F2 and the difference is jaw dropping. Autofocus, IBIS, drive speed, usability with the return of the rear wheel and joystick...I’m getting nearly 100% hit rate in events, family gatherings and portraits, even in low light. What strikes me most is how faces and the near eye are caught very reliably, even when turned away or in profile. This is something that never happened on my EOS R (even after the firmware updates). Another thing I tried: shooting the full moon from my hip with my EF 70-300L at 1/125: first shot perfect, no tripod required. I’m very very happy, well worth the (steep) investment. The video, despite all its limitations, is a great bonus. But in terms of stills photography, I think the R5 is the benchmark in the entire Canon EOS system - dslr or mirrorless.

To be fair, if the camera wasn’t hyped up as some sort of ultimate hybrid camera that’s also ideal for a professional filmmaking setup and it being compared to the 5D2 (which itself was a legend in how much it changed filmmaking on DSLRs), it probably wouldn’t have gotten quite the strong response that it did
@lexinad4 жыл бұрын
@@NeXMaX Anyone complaining they can't shoot more than 15/20 minutes of 8K needs to calm down though. And if that is a problem for anyone, then they maybe shouldn't be buying a hybrid stills camera over a specialised video camera.
@NeXMaX4 жыл бұрын
@@lexinad It's not just 8K but oversampled 4K as well. The time it can record for is also drastically affected if the camera is used at all without recording and it does take a very long time to cool before you get back all your record times. 15-20 minutes on 8K is really the best you can do, with real world results being quite a bit lower. With all that said, the non-oversampled 4K, which has no major usability caveat, is about on the level of the EOS R but without an additional crop, that is to say it is absolutely usable for clips or as a supplement if one were to use the same camera for some video shots during something like a wedding and doesn't need absolutely crisp video. It really shouldn't have been hyped as an "ultimate filmmaking tool" or the like because with such limitations in place, it's really unsuitable for serious video production and honestly, I'm okay with that given that it is at heart a high resolution stills camera that can do decent quality video on the side, and is what I think the prelaunch should've focused on (with 8K treated as a bonus) rather than going all-ham on 8K when it's pretty clear now that the hardware isn't there yet on cameras that don't focus a heap on video. However, I also fully understand why they chose to market it this way. For us who primarily shoot stills, there's seriously a lot to like here and Canon has really addressed a lot of the key criticisms on both the 5D4 and the EOS R such as dynamic range and IBIS whilst really going ham on Dual Pixel. An R5 Mark II would probably do a lot to make the video side better and addressing most of the current flaws, one can hope and is almost certain.

There’s guys in there that did a wedding in Texas and shot 8k. He said when the camera overheated he just switch to 4k30fps and moved on, camera never skip a beat. So those are the experience I’m basing my opinion. Gerold Undone never spoke to any of the strengths of the R5, the r5 has a super35 4k downsampled from 5.1k and has no heat limit and should produce better image quality than a 1 to 1 pixel readout, but never heard about it, never saw a comparison, he only pointed to the strengths of the A7Siii, he never mention that the r5 has better rolling shutter either, why is that? Seems bias right, because if the r5 had worst rolling shutter he would of definitely told everyone on KZbin, so how can you trust someone bias

FINALLY! A review that's focused on the stuff I'm most interested in. I'm surprised not so much on the R5's high performance, but the R6 is almost in good in almost every way. The R6’s low light and high ISO capability beat the current R/RP (and by extension my 5D Mark IV) and kick the A7SIII up and down the street. I'm really anxious to get my preordered R6 in my hands now! The R5? Maybe next year, budget permitting. Video? Bonus!!

Glad you liked it John!
@njrtech4 жыл бұрын
Canon uses aggressive noise reduction even at lower ISO vs. SONY So doubtful it will kick the A7iii down the street. Lol
@JohnDrummondPhoto4 жыл бұрын
@@njrtech I'm talking strictly about the stills capability. Look at Gordon's R6 photos vs the A7SIII at ISO 6400 and above and draw your own conclusions. I know which ones I liked better. Your mileage may vary.

Gordon, this was a great video. In depth and very informative. As an EOS R user, what do you see as the greatest reason to upgrade? The picture quality was fairly close in those examples you posted.
@markolwick22234 жыл бұрын
In the video he states multiple things that are improvements from the R, especially how the AF is a “massive upgrade” over the R, not to mention the image stabilization.

Amazing detailed review of this camera. Especially for someone who's a photographer and not a vlogger. Thank you. Very thoroughly thought out and presented.

Really really well put together. As a stills purist, I am sad that video is dominating the conversation on so many pieces of kit. This is such a refreshing review.

You've done it once again Gordon. Finally a proper "IMAGE QUALITY" test! People have been soooo obsessed with the "overheating issue", they've totally missed this feature set. I been saying from the start, this will make one killer sports camera. I can already hear the feet of 1DX2 owners running to trade them in for this one...Lol.

would like to see a comparison of the 1dx II & R5.

You’re welcome, I have the R5 and I’m curious about Canon’s overheating profiles on the video. We are in the interactive content tools, services and VFX business from hardware software and services side so we have some capability to try to understand the heat profiles. I’m enjoying the camera personally. I also have the Sony A7s3 ordered. Mostly we work regularly with cinema equipment. Again, great job. I’m hoping Canon can address the heat issue. Gordon, I do enjoy your reviews and I’ll tip you a few coffees on your website.

Hi Gordon, I love the fact that you split the content into stills and video. I'm an EOS R owner and I only use it for stills, I have NO interest in video whatsoever, but that's all everyone has been talking about on the R5. Great to see a proper review being done on the use of this camera for stills only. Keep up the good work.

THANK YOU. I don't do any video shooting, I just wanted a review of photographic abilities. That DR was amazing, can't believe the detail that you pulled out, and how low the noise still was.

Love that the review focused mostly on still photography! I have no 8K weddings in my near future. And frankly, Gordon, you always do such a great job at these reviews. I never feel like I’m listening to a marketing pitch from the manufacturer or one of those cranky guys who thinks has to poke holes everywhere. Your reviews are so well balanced for real-world challenges. Thank you!

Thank you for a photo only review of the R5. This is the Golden Unicorn of reviews because every review by others has been nothing but video, video, video, video, video, video -oh, did I also mention video? I’m now a subscriber. Good work!

This was definitely the best photography review of the R5 I've seen so far. It's a perfect complement to Gerald Undone's video review. Awesome Job!

While I certainly respect my friends that shoot video, I really have no need to do so. So sincere thanks to you for deeply reviewing the stills aspects of the R5!!! I've been waiting for a fair, accurate, and detailed review just like this and find it extremely valuable. Can't wait for the update that includes the A7R IV!

Wow! I wish there is an option to like this 10 times! I almost gave up after watching reviews from other youtubers or i'd say vlogger-wannabes that turned out covering 10% stills, 60% video and 30% ego tripping. Just to let you that you are one og my fave ever since i started my photography journey back on 2007. Most of my camera purchases were made after looking at your very informative and no BS reviews. This is so far the best review about R5 that i watched were every second of it is worth the time! Kudos to you! And all because it talks about stills. I could not care less about video. But this is probably the first camera were i would bother to learn how to use video purely for still grabs! At 30mp still grabs. Why not!

I am so glad to finally find a pure stills photography review. I have absolutely no interest in video and I would happily buy a version of the camera without any video capability. The review itself was also good and, even though I have already made my purchase decision (a few orders too late to get it one launch date), it confirms that I have made a good decision.

Finally, a review of the R5 that doesn't spend the entire time comparing it to a video camera! Been waiting for this.
@joeblacke994 жыл бұрын
So glad to see a photography focused review. I’m a stills shooter only and couldn’t care less about the video aspects. It’s hard to find good information on KZbin as it seems most reviews are heavily favoring video aspects. Separating the reviews into separate video and stills subjects matter is a fantastic solution.
@Photographicelements4 жыл бұрын
Yes, for this camera, we needed a separate video for photography. Also needed some appreciation for what the R5 can do, combating all the hate.
@stevemurnan17024 жыл бұрын
Gordon is the best camera gear reviewer on KZbin. He tells it like it is with no gimmicks or half baked tests i.e. testing an R5 with a 500mm f4 mk1 lens and old 2x TC then bitching about a/f and evf lag.

Although I am a 'Hybrid Shooter' I FULLY appreciate this idea of separating the Stills Review from the Video Review... Genuinely great to see someone concentrate on one aspect at a time.
@SAZABI9994 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU. This is the kind of review I was looking for. All mainstream reviewers were not giving any feedback on overheating related to stills-photography only over a long period of time on a hot day. This put my mind at ease.

Just got mine today, updated the firmware, and charging up the batteries as I type this. It'll be a bit of a learning curve, compared to my 1DX Mk III and R6 Mk II, but I'm really, really, really looking forward to this! Add me to the list of people who appreciate that you've reviewed a "stills" camera, since I don't shoot any video at all. Thanks as always for your excellent work!

Thank you Gordon. I've ordered my R5 and I'm waiting for delivery. I've been getting some shade from my Sony A7r IV friends about my choice, and almost started worrying about my decision. Frankly, I rented an A7r IV and hated it. I also tested out a pre-production model of the R5 and loved it. After watching this thorough and excellent review, I now have no doubt that I made the right decision. You pointed out features that I wasn't even aware of, e.g. 100 image bracketing and extended HDR modes. Now I can't wait for my camera to be delivered. Thanks again!

Definitely the best R5 review I've seen on KZbin (and I've seen quite a few). Thank you for separating the photo and video aspects of the camera. So many reviews concentrate on the video functions of the camera that the photography functions get overlooked. Personally I couldn't care less whether or not it overheats when shooting video as I am exclusively a stills photographer. I do however care about how well the autofocus works and how I can go about GPS geotagging my shots (please Canon, can the R5 Mk2 have built in GPS) so not having to sit through a review of functions I won't use works well for me. Thanks again Gordon.

Great review Gordon, as with most people on here I am delighted you split out the photo only functions. I am also enjoying the production quality of rotating the camera on a tripod to show it, very "Price is Right". But the really sweet move was holding the EVF up to your camera and then pushing it away, very slick :) Content was great too of course, and I didnt know about the timed bulb mode, that is pretty fantastic.
