I love that you mention in all your videos that your a photographer and don’t talk about the video features. I’m a wedding photographer and photojournalist and give 0 effs about video features and if I did, I’d use a proper video camera with proper ports etc. I shoot the R6 for getting ready photos, and as a backup and the R5 for the rest of the day. Any situation where I have a dual camera set up, I put the telephoto or 85 on the R6 and the wider lens on the R5. The R5 is an amazing camera and the RF glass is a dream. I didn’t get the R because of the lack of two cards. But ended up getting an insane amount of ROI on both of my Mark IVs. Plus I sold them both on eBay for 1600 and 1750! Hell even my 70-200 Mark II sold for 900! I’ve had that lens for 7 years! All of my old gear sales made the switch a little less painful on the wallet. And all the smart business owners that waited, didn’t loose money by jumping ship to Sony and ultimately coming back to Canon are pretty stoked. My local camera shop keeps me informed on some of the shooters in our town that jumped ship to Sony and are now coming back. He’s cool on not mentioning names. I might not have cared so much; but the last 4 years of Sony trolls has taken its toll. Remember when they constantly said Canon was over. Kids can be funny.

Thanks for making this video. Seriously. It's a huge peace of mind for me. I'm staying on my EOS R until the R5s comes out. It's been really hard not jumping to the R5 immediately, especially since the big stores are almost caught up on filling orders. But now that I'm printing daily on my Pro-1000, I'm really seeing the need for as many megapixels as possible in addition to better autofocus. So I'm holding out for the 90MP monster… R5s is supposed to be Feb/March anyway, so not terribly far away. I actually just increased my B&H Payboo available credit so I can preorder it immediately once it's officially announced. 😅 Hoping my new RF 70-200 2.8 will keep the GAS at bay for awhile, and I'm planning to try to finance an 85 1.2 DS in about a month too… So lots to pay off in the meantime. But it really is a huge comfort seeing how similar the R and R5 image quality is, minus added resolution…

Hello I jumped from 5dm3 into world of canon eos R some years ago. Together with good lenses, this camera is a beast. As You can see on the video, there is really no sense to move at all, if You are focused on the photography. I made a lot of pictures with eosr using standard rf lenses. The quality, sharpness is blowing me away each time when I take any of my photoalbums - I print high quality photopaper albums from our family trips / holidays. Believe me if You are not doing expensive photosessions with the models, eos R is a fanstastic piece of gear.

Can you do a video focused on the usability of the cameras. There is such a huge difference there. Crazy to look at two perfect shots and not look at what takes to get them. Evf refresh rate, 12/20fps, joystick, two card slots, improved grip, shooting raw to one card and jpeg to the other, much faster wireless file transfer, much quieter shutter(no need to go silent many times). Oh and more buttons! More importantly how you can use the features where before you didn’t have the option. I think that is the bigger test as to what creative options we have that the tool gives us. Something like taking a 12/20fps burst and creating a quick gif for a bride to share is a nice touch I’ve seen. I almost never notice whether it’s the R , R5 or R6 in light room but I can immediately tell when using them.

This is 100% true but also very subjective. The R5 has the best ergonomics out of all the mirrorless cameras IMO. I hardly use the EVF and Joystick so this will vary by user. But as a package I genuinely think the R5 is hands down the better camera.

Moving from 6d to Eos R the difference in the dynamic range was pretty amazing,but as far as you go up with the dynamic range...there are not so big difference...you should extremly underexpose 4-5 stops to see more noise only into the most black deep shadows,the rest of the dark midtones and midtones are pretty clean with Eos R.

All I was trying to say is that R is perfectly capable of producing outstanding photos and perfect as a backup camera to my R5. And the AF tracking, IBIS etc. are for action photographers, portraiture etc. I shoot 90% of the time landscapes, so... :)

Thanks for the video and files to download. I sold all of my Fuji gear and am waiting for my EOS R to get shipped to me now. I downloaded your raw files to look at in Lightroom. I was shocked to see they are half the MGs as what I got out of my Fuji X-T3 (59.7 on average). To me that doesn’t make sense. How does a 26 MP crop sensor camera produce almost double the size files?

Now that you have had some significant time with the R5 how would you compare it to the Leica SL2 ( assuming no specks or dead pixels? I recently got a Q2 and love the images it produces. "toe to toe" .. you said it. The other week I used the RF 85mm 1.2 first time on my EOS R. The images were so good, I realized even without having used an R5, that an R5 would have gained little for general purpose non-action shooting. I will be getting an R5, but pushed the purchase way ahead and even bought a 2nd EOS R. I have the RF 50mm 1.2 - RF 85mm 1.2 - Zeiss 135mm Apo Sonnar ZE among the lenses. Cheers, Mario

For anyone that owns the EOS R It would be really helpful to know what the auto focus is like for tracking moving subjects? I shoot a lot of fashion shows so that would be the holy grail for me as with a constantly moving subject getting closer and closer it’s something that can throw off the AF on even the best cameras.

A little late to the party, but I use the R and have rented the R5. The auto and eye tracking works okay on the R with about 65% keepers. Tracking on the R5 will give you about 98% keepers. I'm sure you've probably figured this out by now but for anyone just now seeing it..

@@JakeWalksAmerica No worries and thanks for bothering to comment, yeah in the end I did push the button and buy it and it is pretty cool but it needs to be paired with an R lens to really work as well as it can, results with my existing L-series 70-200 MM were not as good as I hoped compared to the 24 to 70 F 2 .8 R that I bought with the body.

One thing that is interesting with the R5 is I have noticed shooting Raw + Jpg the jpg files are brighter SOOC compared to the Raws ... really loving overhung with the R5 flies though!

I am hesitating to jump to FF from 90D ... Either on the R or go Sony A7III but I like canon ecosystem because i know it. The internet scares me with the dynamic range but now i see the R can do proper job with a 2 stop under exposed ( which normally i don't do ) i'm quite confident the R could be the one to go FF on a "Budget ". If you are shadow lifting 5 stops all the time then you are likely doing something wrong to begin with anyways. The R is a fantastic camera. Lack of IBIS and dual slots may deter the hardcore pros but ultimately it's up to you whether those features plus slightly better AF tracking and half-assed 8k recording is worth the extra $2k.

I shoot with the 90D and the EOS-R. Great combo. Tools for different things. The 100-400 II L seldom comes off my 90D, while my R is mostly used for everything else. I like the EVF on the FF for so many things, but it has encouraged me to do more with LiveView on the 90D to set things like aperture for DOF and white balance.

I shot Canon since about 2005 and when I got the 5D Mark IV, I was blown away by the jump in image quality of that camera. The high ISO performance, the dynamic range was perfect for me and I never thought twice about shooting up to ISO12800 and pushing and pulling files in post. When there was noise, it was very nice and "film-like". When I sold the 5D Mark IV and got the EOS-R, while I loved the fun factor of the mirrorless camera, the image quality was a bit of a letdown compared to the 5D Mark IV. The files just seemed more fragile, with a bit more noise at higher ISOs and annoying pattern noise and colour splotching in the shadows if the files were pulled too far. People say "the sensors are the same" but something about the way the camera was designed caused the final images to not be the same. In normal light with proper exposures, the R files were great! But I was always a bit hesitant when shooting in harsher conditions where I wasn't with the 5D. Honestly, if the R had the same exact image quality as the 5D Mark IV, I probably would have kept it as 30 MP is fantastic, and it was a great photo camera otherwise, especially for the price. Having played with the R5 raw files, I can say it is now better than both cameras and better than files I've used from competing cameras like the z7 and a7RIV. The one concerning thing though is that 2/3 stop underexposure on the R5 vs the R. With that, essentially ISO 100 on the R5 is like ISO 160 on the R, which sort of negates the ISO improvements perhaps (at least on paper). I THINK I read somewhere this might be a LR issue though, and may not be the same in Capture One and DPP but I'm not 100% certain.

Eos R and 5d mark IV if used with Dual Pixel Raw gives you +0.8 more dynamic range headroom,and the files became alot cleaner,very similar to R6 or Z5.I use this option alot when shooting landscape handheld photos,and from 1 single raw file i am done,without any issues with minimal noise into the shadows,i guess i will keep my R for now,i am pretty happy with the shadow recovery,specialy with latest updates..i guess if i had budget i will go for R5 one day :)I have noticed that Eos R pyshed 3-4 stops there is not much difference between R6 and R5,you should really push hardly 4-5 stops to see any big difference,not to mention again Dual Pixel Raw makes things almost the same for the dynamic range,but 90% of people even don't know about it.

sir i need your advice in buying cameras we were looking to upgrade from mid range camera to full frame with in the budget for studio, wedding and other short videos... even though we use shoot both photos and video mostly , a little higher preference for quality photos. one of our senior suggested us to go for mirrorless in canon or sony both for video and photo shoot.. when i compared the difference inbetween 5D mark -iv, eos R and eos R5... mainly i observed that the number of focus points varies from camera to camera... where eos R have 5655 focus points 5D mark -vi have 61 focus points and eos R5 have 1053 focus points I dont know how far having more focus points plays key role irrespective of having 15 mega pixel lesser than eos R5 After watching your video is it right to got for eos R rather than going to eos R6 or eos R6 or need to look at Sony a7R IV pls give us your valuable opinion which can help us ...

If you are doing weddings it’s nice to have the dual card slots! You can’t go wrong with the R5 or R6. I personally don’t like how small the Sony cameras are, I end up with hand cramps after a long day of use.

You also need to consider the massive price difference, to me the EOS R is better value for the money, it gets the job done and pretty well at that. The 1080p video is lovely with a soft roll off, and as you have shown takes almost as good pics which no one would be able to tell unless side by side and by a pro photographer. I personally would recommend spending you money on one of the RF L prime lenses, there are outstanding!

For controlled environment yes. For anything extemporaneous not a chance if you are charging for your work. Autofocus , joystick and 12fps mechanical are worth the extra money. Again if you are being paid, it’s the missed shots that will drive you crazy. I see a bigger difference in these body’s than say the 85 1.4 EF vs the 85 1.2. RF.

A bit strange to keep on repeating that these files look “kind of similar” if clearly the white balance is completely different and one is brighter than the other....they look as if they came from two completely different cameras. R resembles the Sony colour science of old with its horrible green tint. So no, they are most definitely not “kind of similar “.

I guess the better overall performance is mostly because the newer and more powerful processor. ;) 30mp would be perfect for the R6 in my opinion. Why are they stepping down from 26 (Canon 6D II) to 20mp. In 2020 there phone cameras become so good because of their computing power. How can you justify the low resolution in a 2600€ camera body?! Even Sony with a 4.500€ 12mp Video/ photo camera is to me just a bad joke!!! And makes only sense for Sony fanboys or people (youtubers) with to much money. :o

I've seen the raw files. And I couldn't believe these are raw files. Comparing cameras with such a difference in resolutions with this lens is pointless. 50mm f1.2 is a weak lens. But expensive. Like the 50mm f1.0, The maximum resolution it gives is 21Mpx with the 5Dsr and 19Mpx with the 5d mk4. Using e.g. Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art for comparison gives 40Mpx with 5DsR and 25Mpx with 5D mk4 which is comparable to R vs 5R. Photos with the EF50mm 1.2 are comparably sharp because this lens is not able to show more. Maybe stopped down to f5.6? Even the 50mm f1.8stm would be a better choice here. Or the 50mm f2.5 Macro which is incredibly sharp. Looking at these photos, it seems that apart from the differences in dynamics, grain, etc., both cameras give the same sharp image. But they don't.

You are thinking of the wrong 50mm 1.2. The RF version was used, that lens outperforms any of the examples you presented.

Yes you are right. I forgot it's a 50mm 1.2RP. Still, the image quality is a bit disappointing. I mean, I wouldn't trade the 5DsR for the R5 or the 6D2 for the R for taking pictures. It may also be a matter of aperture and shallow depth of field. I wouldn't watch your test if I didn't need to make a 4K movie at a better level than the phone. Although FHD with 5DsR is something extraordinary. No need for 4K. Yesterday I was talking about it with a friend who uses medium format on a daily basis but until recently had a 5DsR and now uses R5 occasionally. He claims, and he used the 5DsR for 7 years/over 300000photos/, that the R5 does not have this plasticity. And that's what I see in your photos. I had the opportunity to use R5 but only briefly. In general, I like it very much. R too. Probably if R recorded 4K FF, I would sell the 6D2, although I love low light photos and R is clearly weaker. Maybe I'll have a chance to check more.
