I upgraded from the R to the R6 and will never look back! The R6 was an absolute beast for wedding videography. Now yes, the outside temperature was 88F outside and in the blasting sun. It did overheat but i just switched it to the 1080 and when you watch the video back, you would never know that it was a 1080 shot in 4k. The 10bit is absolutely phenomenal. also the button layout on the R6 is the best camera I've ever shot. I have shot every camera out there for weddings and vlogging. The R6 is the best by far. Autofocus is solid, color is insane, and the ability to have a scroll wheel for shutter, iso, and aperture makes this camera a leap above the competitors. also the last wedding i shot on the R6, the final shot when the couple was driving away in pich black night, my iso was at 51000 and there was almost 0 grain! that was shocking!

So great to hear! This camera is perfect for wedding, events, and jobs where you have zero control of the lighting. That's a crazy ISO to be shooting at! I'll have to test out the R5 in low light. (I know the R6 would have been the better camera for low light) 🤷‍♂️

I have an R - I use it for video and photography, and I love it. The image from video is lovely. I use it in a professional studio environment for work and the editors love editing the footage, and I use it for a lot of outdoor video and photography, and having 30mp to play with is so good for wildlife. It’s a great all rounder for me - there are better spec cameras out there, no doubt; but for me... I love it!

The R6 is so much better in any not controlled environment. 12fps mechanical, more buttons , dual pixel 2.0, full frame 4K, two card slots, raw transfer over wireless, ibis, 120 refresh evf, joy stick, iso scroll wheel, better grip, better low light,10 bit, rate button, mentioned interval timer and better shadow recovery. I love my R, and was able to do what ever I needed before.... but let’s not act like the R6 isn’t hands down a huge upgrade. Usability is the upgrade.

Yup. I sold my EOS R after trying out the R6. I didn't notice the 10 MP that was missing from the R6. I DID, however, miss the : 1) faster menu browsing (snappier and quicker processor) 2) better low light (EOS R, I hesitated to do anything over 3200 ISO - R6, I was comfortable at 12,800). 3) Much quicker FPS (not that I need it, but it's fun!) 4) 4K60 - in this vid, the EOS R may seem to have the upper edge due to the crop (more range), but the R6 has the crop mode AND you can shoot it in 4k60. 5) 1080P is better on R6 6) Much much sharper image in 4k on the R6 (EOS R is cropped 4k, the R6 is oversampled 4K with 1.1 crop) The only thing I missed about the EOS R is the custom settings in video, but not having the custom settings has taught me to be quicker browsing around the menu and being more conscious of what setting I am currently in.
@rynfilms
@rynfilms 4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps that's where I feel like it falls short. I shoot in a lot of controlled environments too. The R6 has some upgrades for sure. It also has just enough limitations that I didn't feel like it's worth it.. for me anyway.

@@rynfilms Same here. I shoot portraits, mostly in studio. Id much rather have that extra resolution in the R. Couldn't care less about IBIS, 12fps, better video etc...My money would be much better spent on higher end RF lenses or waiting for the R5 to come down in price.
@m77ast
@m77ast 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree. All those things you mentioned - I don’t care about. I am happy with 1080p video. 60fps is good enough for me. Now 30MP - that I cannot live without. I shoot in a studio and have a 1.5m printer. So 20MP good but any crop and you have an issue - it’s a naaa for me. I guess my 5D iii was good 24MP but I was always thinking about getting a higher MP camera. I waited so long but then ordered the EOS R😂😂😂😂. Even if it was 24MP - I would have got it but 20MP - why when there is a cheaper one with 30MP🤔🙄🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️ just did not make any sense. 😂😂😂 perhaps unwittingly the future I will get the R5 for studio work and the R6 for video. We will see but for now - it’s the EOS R baby. That thing fulfils my needs like a wife that never says no. 😂😂😂😂

I bought an R6 to back up my 5D Mark IV and replace my 7D Mark II (I couldn't afford the R5). No regrets whatsoever. The R6 is phenomenal for both photo and video. Its image quality, by my own direct shot-by-shot comparison of identical compositions and processing, rivals the 5D Mark IV very closely. Similar to your own experience with the R vs R6 as the R shares the 5D Mark IV's sensor, I noticed better low-light performance and shadow recovery in the R6. I have a 16x9 R6 image as my wallpaper on my 28" 2K monitor and I see no reason I couldn't get a quality print at least that size, or larger. I also got a sharp, handheld macro shot with the R6 and 24-105mm F/4L at 1/13 sec thanks to the IBIS. That shot would have been impossible with my other bodies. So, I'm probably going to sell the 7D Mark II. At such point that I can afford an R5 or whatever high-MP body Canon might release, the 5D M4 is a goner too. Kudos, Canon, for finally getting mirrorless right. P.S. - I updated the firmware to v.1.1.1 and have not had any overheating issues shooting 4K/30. That said, I'm in a temperate location and started shooting in September. So now it's autumn and haven't had to deal with summer heat. We'll see how it does next summer, but my short-clip style shouldn't cause problems anyway.

the R was $2300 brand new so saying this isnt a step up is insane... the R6 is a step up in every way besides MP which is a ridiculous debate. larger pixel size (from less MP count) allows less noise and better low light performance... theres a reason the 1DXIII has the same sensor and costs $6500

I was like you too. However, I recently downloaded sample R, R5, R6 raw files all taken at the same time and I uprezzed all the images to 45 MP in Adobe Camera Raw. I was mostly unable to determine which photo was which in a "blind" comparison. I later tried the ACR "enhance" feature on the R6 files, then output to 45 MP in ACR and more often than not, the R6 files looked better than the native R5 files at 45 MP. That put my resolution fears to rest. Also, the R6's dymamic range is way better, and it has no shadow banding that plagued my R. However, the things I dislike most about the R6 coming from the R is the body. It's a step back to not have the top LCD, and the back LCD on the R6 is smaller and lower resolution. AND, the R6 is a mostly plastic body vs the magnesium alloy of the R. How can a $2000 cdn camera have a much better body (aside from the controls) than a $3200 cdn body?

what sold me to the r6 over the R: -Ibis makes is lenses even more stable (especially RF) -the improvement in AF for moving subjects seems very good + insane burst and literally infinite buffer (with a good card) -slightly better iso for low light with the combo of these little few things i think i will have a slightly higher number of keepers and that's kinda my goal in upgrading. i don't have the R but i was in the market for the R or the R6. the savings on used eos R bodies were very veeeeeery compelling. I still felt like i wanted the new features lol. its not necessarily going to make me more money but, it will make my use of it a little bit more enjoyable. to me that is worth it.

I owned an R and borrowed an R5 for a few weeks, then the ONE AND ONLY thing that made me want to get an R5 or R6 (likely R6) is the ability to preset different focusing modes to different back buttons. As simple as that!!! Like, hold AF ON and it’ll track in servo, then hold * and it’ll lock focus onto a single center point in one shot. Changing focus modes in the R and RP is infuriating- the R requiring a “check and change” (meaning, just like how the pushbutton lock feels the same while locking and unlocking so you have to check it instead of just using muscle memory to know) to get different focusing modes, and the RP requires a full menu dive... However, when I sold my RP I didn’t buy an R5 or R6, I bought a second R. Partially because I haven’t made any money since covid came around, but mostly because I am one of the rare fans of the 4K crop. But some day, when the R6 is cheaper, I’m going to “upgrade” to it, and ONLY for that stupid tiny little preset focus mode situation. End rant 😂

I have a caveat. The camera as a photgraphic tool is phenomenal, truly, but I have a serious issue in video (NOT the overheating issue). The videos on the back of the camera are great, but once downloaded (to Windows 10 64 bit) the CODEC seems to be incompatible with most software. There is no "load and play" system such as with the 5D Mk IV. I simply cannot find a way other than buying or renting Da Vinci Resolve or Premier Pro to see the videos I create. I am not interested in editing the files, all I need to do is to find some way to convert them to watch and share. I have no idea what to do.
@rynfilms

Sounds like this may be more cameras than what you need. There is a free version of da Vinci that you should be able to convert your files in. What settings are you using to record video? You may want to try recording in a smaller quality and see if playback is better.

@@rynfilms hi. Thanks so much for replying. The camera, answers all my needs as a photographer. The video problem is ancillary as I use video seldom. Partly I have always felt that the combination as both photographic and video tool would fall out of tandem at some point. However, I see this current problem as an anomaly. As a, photographer I can shoot RAW or Jpeg or RAW as well as Jpeg and see with or both products. The camera allows the user to produce the image without need for conversion. Why could Canon not make that possible in video? I don't shoot in Jpeg, but I have the option. Re conversion. Canon answered my query in an extremely obtuse way and I was surprised they weren't particularly helpful... I am still trying to find a solution. So far one person has informed me that I should convert to Pro Res and edit in Premier Pro. The problem is that I would still need to pat a subscription in order to convert. I cannot justify paying for a video editing suit for the amount of video I do. All I want is to be able to convert my output so that I can see it as I do on the back of the camera. The files I am creating are 1080 50ffps. Nothing spectacular.

I respect your opinion and pose a question about these two cameras, and my debate about a purchase: 1. I am not a pro, and I'm looking for a travel camera, one to casually take pics when I'm in NYC, to take pics for promotional Yoga material (I'm a teacher), and I would describe myself as a entry level shooter who is ONLY interested in taking high quality STILLS. Have no interest in video features. 2. My interests in photo taking; travel such as landscape, portraits, street photography, Yoga promo materials, long exposed shots, nighttime cool shots and that's about it. 3. Money isn't necessarily an issue, but I can obviously benefit by purchasing a EOS R and a RF lens such as 24-70, and it'll be same cost as just the Eos R5 body. WILL I be happy 2-3 years from now if I buy the EOS R, get a lens, and save $ and will I be happy with the image quality and output? Or, should I just wait, save and just head first into the r5? Since I still run some EF L glass, it's been the best accessory I've purchased. So really the only thing I am missing is that 4K 60 (which I admit would be great). I think the R is massivly underrated and the R6 massivly overhyped. The differences are sometimes so minor. IBIS is nice but also not that live saver feature. The DualPixel AF2 ist not that gigantic step forward and i still can't 100% trust on it. So i end up shooting in single point af again like i did with the R. Video is the biggest difference but since video is not that important for me its just not worth the price difference. So there where 2 features that i realy miss on the R that the R6 has. Focus Stacking and 120p fullhd in CLOG. But that is not worth the 1200€ Price Difference for me. So i loved my R from the beginning and i will skip the current generation and save the money. The only Cons it has is the 20MP being the bare minimum and kinda limiting as of today's standard, mostly when u zoom in on a 4K monitor and while it is enough if you don't crop, I get that you are more limited if you do crop a lot. Coming from a 6D mk1 it is a huge night and day difference and anyway I was already at 20MP so I didn't feel the "downgrade" but I can understand the bitter taste coming from a 30MP R camera. The only reason Canon did that is otherwise it would have killed the sales of their overpriced R5 so they didn't want to shoot themselves in the foot but I still think it could have been 24-30 instead of 20. Paid 3500$CAD for mine before 15% taxes but big deal for taxes as I get them back with the company and since I sold my 6D for 850$, it was like a 2650$ upgrade which is STILL not cheap... but once you try it you completely forget about it's price within the first 2 shootings you do. The "RF 70-200 F2.8" i bought along at 3400$ wasn't cheap either but I've never used a lens that sharp, stable and quick. It's just perfect, way better than my super old "EF 70-200 F4 IS MK1" and since Canon remains the king of the 70-200 category... I went for it but tomorrow I'll pick a "Tamron 24-70 F2.8" on sale at 1500$ cause no way the Canon RF version is worth exactly TWICE the price for little to no difference quality wise. One upgrade that's so underrated is the monitor as well as a X-Rite colorimeter. I see so many photographers using sh*tty screens under 27in, TN panels instead of IPS/VA, 8bit instead of 10bit, 1080p instead of 1440p or 4K, etc! That was another game changer when I got myself a (LG Ultragear 27GN950) few weeks ago for my editing, plus it's also the best gaming monitor out there at the same time ^^ hence the price though.

Yeah, I guess it all depends on where you're coming from. I've used to that RF 70-200 In the past and it is an amazing lens. A good 24 - 70 and maybe a wide-angle lens and you'll be set!
@sonicvboom

But if you get the Tamron F2.8 24-70mm, don't you need an adaptor for it? Doesn't that kinda ruin the whole point of having an *RF* lens due to the draw distance between the lens and the sensor (hence getting much sharper images)? Also, why is every one so obsessed with the F2.8 24-70 focal length? Is it all because of the wider aperture/ lower light capability? What's wrong with the 24-105mm? I've been told Canon's RF F4 produces sharper images. Paired with R6, the cranked ISO won't even flinch.
@PanzerIV88
@PanzerIV88 3 жыл бұрын
@@sonicvboom Yes it will require an adaptor but it doesn't reduces at all the picture sharpness and I can attest it after 11 months of having my R6. There is still no 24-70 F2.8 for RF other than the way overpriced Canon that's 2x the price of Tamron and at most I could say what... +10% sharper? The Tamron 2nd gen is a very recent design that came out just before the RF system so the only downside is it's bigger heavier and the adaptor adds an extra inch of length, that's all. I would take any day F2.8 instead of F4 to just loose 35mm at the far end. It's also more useful to me as I have that 24-70 but then I can switch to the RF 70-200mm from Canon. Super expensive but there's nothing similar, it's way ahead of any 70-200 in the market otherwise I would have taken a 2x less expensive side option. I then took the Samyang 85mm F1.4 which is a beast, a real just have for portraits! Once you try F2.8 you never want to go back to F4 or variable aperture. I used t9 have a old 70-200mm F4 from Canon, it's night and day difference! The bokeh is way better and yes the extra light "speed and lower ISO" also helps but it's mostly for that bokeh first. Sûre it's less important for landscape but mind you a F2.8 lens stopped down to F4 will be sharper and have less vigneting than F4 at F4 if you see what I mean.

@@PanzerIV88 10% sharper is a lot, lol... The extra weight of the heavier lens (especially the F2.8 70-200mm), plus the portruding 1.4 inch adapter...? If one shoots professionally, hmmm, I'm thinking diminishing returns.

@@PanzerIV88 For the record, I have owned F2.8 lenses all my life. EF L-series 16-35, and 70-200. I just find them too expensive and too darn heavy for that extra stop of light 😅😅. Wondered if I could try out some F4's instead when I move on to RF lenses 😛😛

Nobody in any comparison fails to mention that they are six even though it has 20 megapixels, the AA filter has been canceled in it. Giving it better image reproduction. Why in all the comparisons there’s nobody who mentions this.

The R6 drove me crazy. Like working with a genius with a multiple personality disorder. It is a brilliant camera but the old canon menu system is just not up to the job any more, that’s the disorder. There is no discernible logic to the button and dial layout so swapping between modes or stills and video can totally scramble the controls - that’s the multiple personalities. For someone using it everyday doing the same type of work I'm sure it can be a great fit. Me, I swap shooting styles a lot with different ways of holding the camera which meant tripping buttons and losing control mid shoot. I never felt at one with this machine. Often, video not recorded cos the Red record signal is poorly placed. IBIS destroying pans. Stupid technical gotchas when shooting video that really shouldn't rely on you having a flow chart in your head. I sold it. The R looks like just the machine for me.

For my wildlife work both the R5 and R5 and especially the R5 are revolutionary. With the R, I am sorry to say, I felt like having no autofocus, it’s simply that bad especially with fast moving subjects.

I've been told that even in editorial shoots, the R misses as high as 30% of the "locked-on" shots when the subject is moving. The R6 is definitely *superior* in its eye-detect/ auto-focus capabilities.
