Yes! Seeing a review that focuses on why the camera is and what it can do is so refreshing compared to all those who comment on what they think it should have been and what it can’t do. I get it that people are disappointed that canon did not make a half-prize R that somehow would be better in all aspects but let’s be real. Thank you Gerald. (And thank you Felix for your comment.)

Great video, up to your usual high standards, Gerald (and Julie). One thing regarding handling, the buttons are very customisable. I bought an M50 purely for street photography and I have buttons set up as follows: MFn button = ISO, record button = AF mode (tracking, zone, single AF point), left button = AF single shot/servo toggle, right button = drive mode (single, high speed continuous, low speed continuous, remote/self-timer options), up button = aperture/shutter speed toggle and down button = LCD/EVF toggle. Hitting the Q button brings up the Quick Menu and always lands on the last setting changed, so mine always brings up white balance. This means I can change ALL major settings either directly or following one click of a button. 2 other things: audio levels show up on your mobile phone or tablet while recording via the Canon Camera Connect app. Secondly, I have image review turned off (we already see the image before taking it, why see it after capturing it)? So with that turned off and never using the LCD while capturing images, I never get less than 1, 000 shots on a charge. I average 1600+ shots with enough battery left to plug into my laptop's USB port and transfer images. I get 1800 shots if I do a lot of bursts. I rarely get below 1400 shots. Battery life is spectacular. To finish off, as someone else stated, the dynamic range of the M50 at ISO 100 is excellent and close to the competition. It's very easy to recover skies or very underexposed shadows. On1 Photo Raw 2019.2 brings out the most in the M50 files, but they have to be converted to DNG files first, unfortunately.

Thanks for the kind words and for sharing your thoughts. One thing I also like about the M50 ergos is the placement of the Menu button. Nice and close to the controls. Always like that. And yeah, turning off image review is huge. I do that almost automatically when I test a new camera. I was impressed by the battery life for such a tiny camera. Great points. Cheers!

@@geraldundone I tested the M50 battery life shooting video back to back (30min after 30min) a stationary object with the 15-45 IS STM (IS ON), at f/4, 1/50 shutter speed, HD 25fps, AF FACE DETECT, AUTO ISO-WB, ON SCREEN DATA NO LIMIT TIME MANUAL VIDEO MODE, and got 2h and 14min (!!)before the battery (original canon) dies on me. Hi Gerald, i'd like to add some features that i discovered using the m50 for 6 month right now. I use it for live streaming using a dummy battery pack and connecting it via usb to the pc usin eos live view software which mirrora your screen on pc to make you take photos from the pc or even recording videos (and there is the option to eliminate every reticle so the image is plain clean). I stream using obs capturing the image of live view as a webcam and it works flawlessly 1080p 60fps (so the streaming downside is solved). To solve the aps-c downside viltrox sells for 130 $ an adapter for ef lenses which multiplies x0.71 reducing the crop factor to 1.1 and makes you gain a stop (so that noise you saw at 3200 iso get shifted to 6400 iso). Basically this camera can do the same things as the eos Rp at half the cost.
@alidollar19946 жыл бұрын
How do you achieve 60fps footage via eos liveview? It all looks kinda choppy even though my PC is of decent specs. Am i missing something?
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experiences. Does it still turn off after 30 mins? Do you just press a button every so often to wake it up?
@LaZeccaSulLupo6 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! No it does not turn off until you turn it off yourself. @Ali Dollar I don't know why it looks choppy for you but i can assure it works well, remember to match your obs window capture resolution and framerate to the actual framerate of the camera (in my case 1080p 60fps) and remember to set the shutterspeed accordingly to the framerate you're shooting at(rule of thumb if your framerate is 60fps then set 120 as shutter speed). If you wanna see some footage recorded this way there should be some on my twitch channel "mietitwitch" (no spam intended, i'm not actually streaming anymore). Glad i could be helpful!

The RP is a great option to go full frame on the cheap if you are a Rebel user. One - you probably have an EF lens or two. Two - you already have the spare batteries. Three - no learning curve, because it's the same menu and buttons. And there are a lot of Rebel users, I guarantee you that.

Canon has been fully awake all this time, unlike its users. They just have different cameras for different purposes, so they wont give any extra video feature for a full frame photo camera (RP) or aps-c travel photo camera (m50). They wont ask you to buy a C200, but thats what they offer you if you need 2019 4k video features. Get a xt30 if so, and enjoy your 6D upgrade (RP) for photo, or move on to sony system. Will I notice much of a difference? I feel that if I want to notice a difference that I might have to jump to the Canon EOS R, however it is $1000 more than the RP. When it comes to Canon full-frame mirrorless cameras am I pretty much stuck between the RP or R if the R is my max price range? I thought about going for the RP and spending the extra money on a nicer lens? My biggest thing is that I want to see a difference in my photos when I upgrade from the M50. Will I only see a minor difference in quality if I go to the RP? Will there be much more of a difference going to the R? Any input helps. Thanks!

Its the same price I payed for M50 with EF-M 32 but I think like you that the RP is similar to a FF M50 but it has two control rings (3 with RF lens or control ring adapter) and a lot of helpful settings / AF features (eye AF in servo) and now 24 fps in 1080. I was two times just in the mood to order a 2nd M50 but this offer convinced me to buy an RP with the RF 35 to have an image stabilized solution + use it with M50 + 70-200 L IS f/4 or alternatively M50 with EF-M32 and the RP with f/4 70-200 to have a good two body setup with cameras which are much more similar than M50 + 200D or M50 + 5D classic. And I really like EVF - not the EVF itself but the chance to use DPAF through a viewfinder. DPAF helps me to get the shots I always wanted (macro, out of center objects pin sharp etc).

Hi Gerald! As I've researched the Canon EOS RP Power Saving mode limits the display for a maximum of 30 minutes Display OFF Options are: 15 sec, 30sec, 1min, 3min, 5min, 10m, 30 min (respectively) Auto Power Down options are: 30 sec., 1min, 3min, 5min, 10m, Disable (respectively) You might be able to disable Camera power down but the display will still turn off after 30 mins. My question is while recording it with Atomos ninja V or plugging it up with Elgato Camlink, what happens if the display turns off after 30 mins? Will recording still continue if you press the shutter button of the camera to wake it up or will the recording in the Atomos ninja v stops and display recover options? Nah, it's just the same 4K24 you'd get in camera. I was thinking of you though when I was talking about the small-space-full-frame issues. 😃

Great Vid!! You can get clean output with the m50 with SparkoCam with no record limit making it a very affordable streaming setup.

Hi Gerald! Great comparison! I'd like to know more on the hdmi out resolution on the rp. Does it output 1080p at 25,50 or 4k at 24? Thanks
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
For PAL it does 1080p50 and 4K25. For NTSC it does 1080p60 and 4K24. The options aren't adjustable when in HDMI out. It defaults to those frame rates.
@alessandro.petracci6 жыл бұрын
Gerald Undone ok thanks. But according to the website you cannot record both on the recorder and both on the internal card right?
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that's correct, yeah. A couple other minor things get disabled too, but I'd have to look them up.

But what about the M50 with the speedbooster 🥺
@persaud1016 жыл бұрын
What about RP with the native RF lenses which are considered the best in industry. I have use the m50 and image is no way close to the RP...RP is on another level!!
@MariNate10166 жыл бұрын
Karkaris better than the RP.

@Kent Hinson RF 35mm lens $449, RF 24-105mm $849 which is not that expensive for the top of the line lens, EF 50mm $125. You can mix and match until the prices drop or 3rd parties come with glass comparable to the other RF lens for alot less...

M50 with viltrox speedbooster owner here! the setup generally works pretty good, examples can be found on my Instagram @meltyvisuals . However, the M50 sensor falls on its face in low light or at high shutter speeds. any ISO above 5000 is terrible, and you get to that number pretty fast due to the small sensor size and lack of IBIS. That's why I'm in the market for an RP or older Sony A7II/A7SII. I shoot in low light and at moving cars often.

Its 2021 is this stills basically true? Im looking for my first canon DSLR in a while as a little brother to a C200/300. What about ND ?- would it be the case that Rmount has the drop in ND option while the M mount does not. Is the RP any good in crop mode - im thinking of the 18-80 lense

With 6D mark ii's price being lower than you have mentioned in the video. Which one would you choose? rp or 6d? I'm trying to go full frame from a Panasonic GX-85 which is a mft camera so needed a suggestion

I'd take the RP unless the price difference was drastic.

Do you think I can get the same sharpness and quality portrait In m50? can you help me with this question If I buy canon 35mm f1.4 for M series for m50 compare to Canon rp with New lens 35mm 1.8 for R series then you think the with one will be better photo? (I know in M50 35mm will x1.6) but in general

Hi Gerald!! Great video! Question... Now I have the Eos t5i. I want to upgrade a FF camera. Is this (RP) the most convenient to make this step? What would you recommend me? I have EF-s and EF lenses (I want to use the camera for newborn, kids, some ocasionally some events). Thank you! Greetings from Buenos Aires.
@geraldundone5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Sebastian! Yeah, I think the RP would be a good option for you.
@JennyDarukat6 жыл бұрын
Damn I never thought about the streaming angle for purchase decisions - everything factored in, the RP really does sound like the best deal for low light and shallow DoF there together with an EF prime or medium-wide zoom. G7 for good light and budget, EOS RP for low light/FF. Fantastic choices.
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I absolutely agree with that. And Canon lenses are great!
@TheAndrewforbes886 жыл бұрын
The A7III is the same price with the kit lenses and is better in every way. I don't understand why the RP is priced the way it is. The RP should have been priced like a rebel camera. It doesn't make any sense at all. There's zero reason to buy this over an A7III or a Z6.
@AllCarsUnited6 жыл бұрын
You can get aso y a72 new for less and a a7r2 for a bit more that will absolutely blow this camera out of the water.
@JennyDarukat6 жыл бұрын
@@AllCarsUnited I don't see why a lineskipping A7R II would be preferable to Canon's RP with dual pixel AF - this is about streaming, not stills, and that's where the Canon's strengths lie. The base A7 II is a decent deal though, but Canon's AF and access to more affordable purpose-fit EF glass give it the lead there for me.

The M50 seems pretty good for travel, but what would be the competing options for a travel camera?
@borderlands66066 жыл бұрын
Fuji X-T100 or the cheaper Sony A6000, or cheaper still Panasonic GX80/85. Assuming M50 + kit lens comparisons.
@patriotmjb6 ай бұрын
The m50 making allows for charging while the camera is on. I carry a battery pack with me for that purpose with video
@persaud1016 жыл бұрын
If your going to record alot video just get a Fuji xt3 or Panasonic gh5 or even a Sony A7iii... RP provides mind blowing studio quality protraits and stills and gaves access to RF lenses which are considered some of most cutting edge technology on market by Canon thats why I am getting the RP because I want access to the RF lenses and decent video quality which RP provides for 1300...Other systems you got to drop 3k-4k to even get a decent setup...

Did you change something about how you shoot and edit the videos? This looked sharper to me.
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
I'm using a new key light, but the difference seemed subtle to me. Maybe that's what you're seeing. 😃

Probably because I have my light off in my room tonight. Edit: Yeap, just my light not fucking with my eyesight. And new light seems to be more diffused, hazier. Old videos are sharper.

With Canon's new R system and mirrorless cameras in general, a lot has been made of EVF vs OVF. Is there any difference between what one see with an EVF on the EOS R vs the LCD screen seen in Live View on a Canon DSLR or the EOS R? I saw mention of the DOF view available via the EOS R EVF (WYSIWYG), but does the LCD not give you WYSIWYG also? I know with a DSLR with an OVF you had to have a DOF button on the camera, but again, is what you see on a LCD not WYSISYG? Thanks.
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
For the most part both the EVF and LCD produce a what-you-see image. However, you might get better clarity and have a better refresh rate, as well as reduced glare on the EVF, which could in turn help you create more accurate exposures.

Hi Gerald great videos. Would you please clarify the debate starred recently on iso. Some are saying that post processing iso 100 images to achieve correct exposure is the same as increasing the iso in the camera. Also iso changes from camera to camera. It would be nice to understand this better. Thanks Jer
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion, Jeremy. It's true that some cameras are invariant and can produce nearly identical results in post, but other cameras are not and that is not an option. Some cameras further are only invariant at some ISO ranges. It changes too much from camera to camera to say anything definite.
