I switched from Canon to Olympus a while ago - I’ll be 80 later this year and can’t carry the huge, heavy gear around any more!. I love the system! So many brilliant features and, as you say, perfect for macro. I haven’t found anything it doesn’t excel at. Your mini spiddys look wonderful.

Nice video Stewart and welcome to the dark side! “Toy Camera”??? What every user of Olympus & OMDS pro gear will tell you is that the build quality & weather sealing is second to none. Add to that the extensive feature set, best in the business IBIS and superb glass you will soon come to realise that you have largely wasted a lot of time using any other system for macro, better late than never, though!!!…..

Nice, I shoot with an OM Systems OM-1 and mostly do field macro stuff, the small size and weight are a blessing. The 40-150 f2.8 is also brilliant at getting shots of bugs that are likely to fly off, as it's the equivalent of an 80-300mm tele in terms of field of view and has a relatively small working distance of 1.3m. A great system for Macro.

There are of course Canon EOS models that do focus bracketing, and mirrorless models that also do in-body stacking. But to my knowledge they all fall short. My Canon EOS 90D does focus bracketing, but it suppresses the external flash (not sure why). So I use slow burst mode with the flash and simply move to focus bracket. I get along with it just fine, but I won't be doing a large # of frames for a stack. I had also rented the Canon mirrorless R7, and that will do focus bracketing but apparently ONLY at 30 frames / sec. Again, no external flash can keep up with it. During hand-held focus bracketing under ambient light,, small camera movements result in a weird rolling shutter like effect so the images cannot stack properly. Stacking works well from a fixed mount like on a tripod, though. If you are looking for an experiment to try, I suggest you try to see if you can do hand held focus bracketing with the R7 to see if it works for you (I don't believe the problem is ME since I do good stacks with other cameras). Perhaps you can add your prominent voice to call out Canon for this deficiency. I don't know if Canon has a model that works for hand held focus bracketing + external flash, but I have not found one.

Thanks for these comments - I'm using the Canon R7 with the RF 100mm macro lens and a Godox flash/diffuser. I was really hoping the flash issue with bracketing will be fixed with the R7 mark ii if they release one, but we'll see.

You are absolutely approaching this with the right mindset. Yes the FF has a slight edge in low light, but nothing that can’t be overcome. I’ve been in m4/3 to FF and back again. The E-M1.2 is a powerhouse and is priced so low right now it’s the perfect way to add m4/3 as a complement to another system. The trade value was so low I ended up keeping mine when upgrading to the OM-1. Find a used RRS L bracket. That little extra grip of the bottom plate will change the entire handling of the camera for the better. The vertical grips are cheap as chips now too. Welcome to the enlightenment.

I have both Nikon and Canon digital systems as well as some very high-end rangefinder and medium format film cameras. Three years ago I bought into the Olympus MFT system, nothing crazy and all used and only what I needed. If you look at the numbers, MFT doesn't make sense, but the results say something else. It is a very capable but under rated system. It has its limitations, but not for 95% of all photographers. I think a lot of photographers try and compensate for lack of talent by buying expensive stuff and use them as a badge of credibility.

I bought the canon r6 mkii a few weeks back specifically because it had built in focus stacking among other features i wanted. It works brilliantly. I'm taking 12-15,000 images per project and just keeping the composited result while binning the rest. Saves me a ton of work. Very happy.
@NathenDanforth
@NathenDanforth Жыл бұрын
The focus stacking on the R6.2 is awesome! Unfortunately it cannot be done with flash. The Olympus can stack with flash, unfortunately though only 8-15 images depending on the model. And Olympus doesn't allow the multi image delete like Canon. Alas, there is no perfect camera. But the OM-1 is close.
@Notagain640
@Notagain640 Жыл бұрын
@Nathen Danforth yes unfortunately I have to use a ring led, but my subjects are static, so it just means a longer exposure. It uses its rolling electronic shutter, which apparently is the reason it can't trigger a flash, and Canon has said that the mechanical shutter could be enabled in a future firmware release, but I doubt that will happen. The composite image generated is a jpeg and I use that to identify the batch of images I want to keep. I shoot in RAW knowing that the sub shots are not what I want. So i grab the jpegs and quick reformat or erase everything else. I don't think the camera can auto erase the images used to create the composite. This is the best workflow I've found. However if I'm missing something in terms of auto deleting the RAWS, please let me know. All help and advice is grarefully received. I'm new to this.
@NathenDanforth
@NathenDanforth Жыл бұрын
@@Notagain640 say the stack failed. The jpeg comes out all wonky and you know you won't want any of the raws in the sequence. Just hit delete (on one of the raws preceding the jpeg) while in playback and a prompt will pop up that asks if you want to delete all the images in the sequence. If you're shooting a lot of stacks it saves you a ton of time sorting through the failures later.
@Notagain640
@Notagain640 Жыл бұрын
@Nathen Danforth yes, I discovered this by accident and used it extensively to start with. Now I'm using a Manfrotto genie to auto index so I no longer have chance to use this feature because I set it going and leave for 10-15 mins to take all the shots before the next setup. My 128GB card fills up quickly but it just means I have to take images off every 40 mins or so.

@@StewartWoodArt That is fine if you always want that extreme xof capability. But a pair or extension tubes are helpful for those times when you might want just a little more out of the 60mm but not 2X. The Meike ones I mentioned are plastic have the one to camera body electrical contacts and are only around $30. I didn't mention that Laowa makes a 50mm 2X Macro 4/3. It is $400 here in the US. It is manual focus but does have contacts so you do get the f stop info. Finally, try the 2X teleconverter setting on your EM II. Even with the drop in resolution it is useful.

Excellent video and channel (new subscriber today!) two questions if I may? Can you look through the viewfinder (or view the screen) while you are shooting the focus stacks/brackets? On my Nikon Z9 it’s got a great focus stack feature but the major downfall is you have to go to the menu, and use the focus stacking feature from there. While it’s doing it’s thing you have the menu screens, you can’t look through the viewfinder etc. Second question: How do you not “lose” your spiders while they are out in the open? I see him on the flower on your desk, but what stops him from jumping off the desk and disappearing? Thanks for your time!

This is very interesting and quite timely, because I've been told by foks on a Canon forum, that you can't use flash with in-camera focus bracketing/stacking, auto-focus, yet you are doing it. I've the Canon R10. Is this ONLY becaase you're using a different brand?

Hi, Steward. This is a choice you never regret. I have the Lumix G9 also Micro 43 and I love it. The extra depth of field is just amazing. I also do a lot of macro work myself. The 60 mm Zuiko lens is small but a beast in results. I hope you have a lot of fun with your Micro 43 Olympus. PS. I have an Olympus OM10 mark 3 as a backup camera. Stunning video, man. Stewart ... I am very disappointed in this video's title. "Canon Failed Me" Canon did not fail you but they do not offer in camera focus stacking, which is apparently a desire of yours. Good for you. Please understand that folks like you, and your videos and may be swayed to make decisions based on your reports. All camera systems have issues for example Olympus = major noise issues when using in low light / Laowa lenses = questionable build quality issues. If you will discuss the positives and the negatives of a camera system you will be doing your viewers and Patreons a favor ...... transparency and full disclosure goes a long ways

Canon is one of the best when it comes to Macro specifically. The new RF Canon 100mm Marco lens is out of this world! You can even change the boka size/edging. Also their are so many different macro lenses for the price ranges from the entry level all the way to the new RF macro and my by far favorite macro lens the MPE 65mm 1x-5x with the twin light flash. Yeah you are staying in your price range if that is your restriction but saying that "Canon failed you" on macro photography is crazy and makes you sound like you just don't know any better and I know that is not true. But you did get a good click bait title if that is the type of creator your okay with being. It works and this is a business so that is good and to each their own. Macro is my favorite type of photography but their is no way I personally would grab that camera for my macro work.
