I own the G40. For better and overall quality of the camera, know it will never do better than a PTZ CAMERA. They generally have better optics. However, consider moving your canon a little closer so it is not at the end of its optical zoom. And more so, consider setting in manual adjustments for your room for overall quality. The default settings of the canon inside will only work well for closer recording. Manual adjustments of your camera settings will provide a better overall experience. And may surprise you in approaching the quality of a PTZ camera. My church has less lighting than yours, but my canon because of the adjustments I’ve made work really well. Set your camera to manual. Definitely look at adjusting your aperature/exposure. Adjust Recording Mode if in MP4 to record at least 17Mbps or higher. And try to set your white balance correctly. If on a tripod, turn off image stabilization. This is all based on 1080 settings, but canon does not generally change things dramatically between camera models. I also have a rf500 which is the cheaper model, but it does pretty well for our general usage. Good Luck! Enjoyed your video. PS - you could sell your G50 and purchase a second PTZ knock-off fro your church. I didn’t notice with your image while closer and lighter, the color was off for the lighting and it was also softer. But I think you can make adjusts to your settings on the PTZ. Because of your video, I have begun thinking about an up grade to this type of PTZ knock-off. Although, from what I am hearing, it really is a PTZ just without the label.

Thanks for the comment! The Canon is about 50 feet away from the stage so I’m sure that it’s too far away to really capture a great image. I’m going to try and use it in a closer setting as you suggested and see how that works. I absolutely love the PTZ. If you want, check out the other video I made with a better comparison to the Canon. It has the same sensor as the PTZ Optics brand and is about half the cost. I’m also going to be making a technical comparison video between the SMTAV and the PTZ Optics cameras. Again, thank you so much for your input! It’s very much appreciated! Subscribed to you as well!

I just purchased, then returned, a G50. My shoots are generally outdoors with decent lighting but I was not pleased with the color or image quality. My July 2022 Kawasaki Mule video 107 was shot entirely with the G50 for reference. It required a lot of color grading. Not sure of your video would have saved me from buying it, but it’s a good review. Thanks.

Thanks for the review. We just purchased the Canon G50 for our services. We are not in a big space like you and we have lots of natural light so hopefully the lighting will not be an issue. Thanks again for the information. :-)

I have the G40 and used it for streaming in church for 4 years. Always have an extra battery close by. If you have AC then o issue. This is a professional camera. The uses of this camera are endless!

So glad to see such a review. I think you should compare a Sony a6000 series camera with one of the power zoom lenses such as the 18-105 (28-157eq) The light gathering ability of the large sensor could be much better than the PTZ. Total outlay would be about $1500 with maybe pro quality. Actually, your video about the PTZ camera convinced me to go the Sony APSC route with zoom lens and wired or wireless remotes. These an operate the power zoom lenses such as the 18-104 or even the older 18-200. Sony has the best options to compete on remote operation than any other APSC system. Plus you get a Sensor 200 times larger at least. PTZ sensors are like cell phone sensors.

I am curious to know whether you had the shade cover on when you were shooting the Canon indoors. The Canon appeared to have much better lighting contrast further back though as the shot grew tighter, the lighting dimmed. It's possible the cover simply blocked out the light above, Just my thoughts. Loved the video

I'm looking to purchase a camcorder for my podcast and been researching for weeks. Narrowed it down to 4 and was hoping to get some advice on a final decision. I narrowed it down to the Sony FDR-AX53, Panasonic HC-VXF1, Canon HF-G50 and Canon HF-G60. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think for an up close and personal environment like podcasting, either one of these cameras will work ok. If you are shooting for a live stream, I don’t think either of these cameras actually live stream in 4K. They only record in 4K. It looks like you’re sticking to the $1000usd mark. Is there a specific reason you are wanting to go with a camcorder as opposed to a mirrorless or DSLR? For that price you can get a better camera like the Canon M50 amzn.to/3bkyJU4 or the Sony ZV1 amzn.to/3bkYDqD. I’m actually considering getting the Sony A5100 because I’m going to start using a USB mic in my computer using OBS to record since it doesn’t have an external mic input.

No wonder! If the gain and shutter settings on the Canon had been correctly set (or at all), the results would have been completely different. You're comparing a newer Canon 4k camera with a 21MP sensor, modern day color science, and even a clean 10bit HDMI output to a cheap PTZ? Very misleading presentation. Perhaps, watch a few camera setup videos so you can really get the Canon's dialed in. There should be no comparison, honestly. The Canon should easily crush that PTZ.

Thanks for the input! I’ll try and mess with the setting some more. I had another set of eyes with me to try and achieve the best setting on the Canon and it wasn’t working out. I think I was too far away with the Canon to get the most out of it. I’ve since moved it to a smaller setting and I’ve yet to toy around with the settings for that application. Remember, lighting is a huge help and we don’t have great lighting in our worship center. I’ve spent hours watching videos on the Canon settings and it just didn’t seem to work out in that setting.

For a proper camera person, I am sure the G50 could be set better. But I'm not a camera guy. I am looking to upgrade from my Vixia 800 we've been using for 2 years and this video is enlightening. The G50 or G60 were candidates. But based on this video, I don't think I am going to be happy for the expense. Out of the box brighter view on the PTZ is hard to pass up on. It just seems awfully expensive to move to the mirrorless solution and getting a better camcorder seems like it will cause a lot of work for not much improvement. The PTZs are not much less than the G50 and provide an ease of use experience I think we're looking for.
