Just a quick review of the Canon M100. Is it a competent light travel camera or a useless piece of trash? Spoilers, it's not trash.

The M50 offers you some pretty nice option you don't get on the M100. However, if the options are not something you'll use the M100 is a great choice. Thank you for the comment, best of luck.

Love your review. I have an EOS R, but it's way to heavy when I travel around. This seems like a good option, and it's not expensive. Also worth mentioning, going from DSLR to mirrorless, lens calibration is not needed with a mirrorless camera. This is because mirrorless cameras do not use an autofocus chip. Instead, the camera's sensor does both the focusing and the imaging, so there is no room for miscommunication. I.e. you will get the maximum sharpness from all your lenses.

Amateur hobbyist here. I love my m100. I grew up using DSLRs and was used to that entire system/style so the switch was weird at first but the lack of viewfinder is really not a big deal. I do use mine mainly for street photography and hiking/plant pics so I don't *need* the viewfinder.

Thanks for your review. I have the Sigma 30mm and really like it. I go between the Sigma 30/1.4 and the Canon 22mm/2.0. Just kind of depends on what I am doing. There's something nice about being able to put the M100/22mm in a jacket pocket or a side pocket of a backpack. I haven't really messed with the Sigma 30/1.4 on the M100, but have really enjoyed using it with my M6 Mark II! For me, practicality and value are important. Not a professional by any means. Just looking to conveniently capture and preserve personal memories

Just purchased an M200 and was looking for workarounds to the no-grip, tiny camera scenario. It would be my first "real" camera (had purchased a 2012 point and shoot for party photos and such, wanted something small and portable for more everyday carry-around shooting), and I couldn't justify jumping to the M50 when I found the M200 for $300 off retail BEFORE tax! THANK you for simply existing in my eager browsethrough I do when I'm waiting for anything expensive and fun to ship and linking your camera grip!

Very nice review. I recently bought an M200 (also from the Canon refurb website). I love your suggestion of turning the camera upside-down for overhead shots! I never thought of that and have never seen anyone suggest it. Great! One thing - Canon EF-M 11-22 f/4-5.6 IS STM lens is an excellent ultra-wide specifically made for M-mount cameras. It is not much larger than the 15-45 and the image quality is much better. There are now several YT reviews of it (Christopher Frost; Matti Sulanto) praising its IQ and build quality. The Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM is also no slouch - VERY small, fast, with very good IQ. Only down-side is no stabilization. Anyway, the M100 and M200 are excellent small cameras with a large APC-C sensor. As you say, what more could you want!?

As a user of the 6D+M200, I completely agree with your sharing. I sincerely believe that Canon's decision to discontinue the EOS M series is a big mistake. The RF-S mount currently doesn't have an APS-C camera as lightweight as the M100/M200, which is a real pity.😢

@NoProJoe

Both are fine cameras. It really depends on how you will be using the camera. I've had both at one time. The A6000 is a nice photography camera with a view finder. In my opinion if you are buying the camera for mostly photography the Sony is a better choice because of the view finder. If you are buying the camera for mostly videos the M100 would be my choice because of the dual pixel auto focus. The auto focus is solid for video and the video itself is more pleasing to me.

I want to connect the camera to an external monitor via the HDMI and play the ‘live image’ on it. When I do this can I still make exposure adjustments without the menu items showing up on the attached monitor? If you know the answer- cool, if not, thanks anyway!
@NoProJoe

I've never tried using a monitor on it. From what I've read it does not have a clean HDMI out. There are people that have rewritten the cameras script to achieve it. However, I don't suggest this. I'm definitely not an authority on monitor use. Thank you for asking. Best of luck to you. Cheers.

Honestly I’m not much of an astrophotographer. I’ve always heard wide aperture lenses and low ISO are the main important things. I’ve moved over to Olympus from Canon and they have quite a few features that lean towards astrophotography like live composite mode. I’ve used it for fireworks and it was pretty darn cool. I think the M100 would work fine with one of the Sigma f1.4 lenses. You can use your phone as a remote and you’re good to go.

@NoProJoe
@NoProJoe 3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion just about any larger sensor dslr or mirrorless camera will net better results than an iPhone. They process a much cleaner and detailed image when viewed at 1to1. That being said, many people opt to use the iPhone for content creation everyday. Many consider it to be easier and its right in your pocket. Most people share on social media and view images on their phones so 8K is probably not needed. I like making videos and taking photos with my dedicated cameras for my own enjoyment. I'm a bit of a pixel peeper and like to see detail in my images. However, can you create content with an iPhone? Definitely! I would try using the phone I already have and see if I am happy with the results. When it no longer give the results you are personally happy with then it may be time to look into something else. That is just my personal opinion on the matter. We all get caught up in the newest gear available. You don't need it to create good content or images that tell a story. I hope this makes sense. Thank you for your question.

@@BigStevie256 I can give you some direction. The Canon webcam software is not compatible with the M100. What you'll need is a capture card, and micro-hdmi to hdmi cable or converter. If you go onto Amazon, there's a generic USB (2.0) hdmi capture card for between $20 and $30. This is the data link/conversion from the camera to your computer. Additionally, you need to a clean hdmi output (and some other tweaks). If you search on KZbin for "m100 clean hdmi," it'll show you an easy tweak to trick the camera into displaying clean hdmi and disable to disable the auto shut-off. Essentially involves you putting a script on your SD card telling the camera to not display details and not shut off after 30 minutes. At that point, your only real limitation would be battery, but that can be solved with a dummy battery and AC adapter (also on Amazon). Look up LP-e12 dummy battery. Hope that helps.

@@NoProJoe - thank you for your reply - here is my information - After many months of studies about this camera, I bought it at a higher price in January 2021 from Canon's authorized dealer in my country. Most essential movie feature, the frame rates - 24 fps and 60fps are missing!!! - - I bought the camera with many hopes, I am really disappointed and frustrated - - My main need was video/movie, but I couldn't achieve it! Anyone who reads this comment, please check everything before you buy this camera in 2021, many features you see in reviews might be gone when buying it new?

@kevinbui4059
@kevinbui4059 4 жыл бұрын
M100 and M200 are essentially the same form factor/concept. The M200 is just newer one. It is the successor to the M100. I think you get the Digic 8 instead of M100's Digic 7. And the M200 does 4K video. I have the M100 and I really liked it. Lots of value for the price. I probably go with the M200 over the M100 (unless you find a killer deal). Bodies don't really hold their value. The glass is probably going to cost you more than the body. I think there are a few features that might get you over the hump. 4K video vs 1080p. USB-C port on the camera vs. micro-USB. I think you can charge through the USB-C while the micro-USB is data only. And there's webcam support for the M200 and not M100 via USB cable. M50 vs M100/M200... slightly different body and features. You get a few more features on the M50 (EVF, cropped 4K footage, the way the LCD screen can turn/rotate, 3.5mm MIC in port) at the expensive of size. I guess it really depends on what you want to do. When I bought M100, I bought it with the intention of traveling with it. And it's a great travel camera. Small, light, and compact, especially with the Canon 22mm prime lens. It'll fit in your jacket pocket... no problem! The M100 really made sense for me because of the size. Space and weight was a premium. If you bring it... you got to carry it. It sounds like you probably want to go with the M50 where you can attach an external microphone. And being able to record in 4K, though not necessary right now, will definitely future proof your needs/wants.
@NoProJoe
@NoProJoe 3 жыл бұрын
M50 would probably be a good all around choice with the EVF.

It's a great little kit. The major down side for video is the lack of a mic in port. The onboard mics are pretty good if you set the audio to manual and shut of the wind and attenuation. It definitely punches above it's weight. Thank you.

When I purchased the m100 the m200 wasn’t available. In my opinion if you own the m100 there really is not a huge reason to upgrade to the m200. If I were making a first time purchase and I had the extra money I would get the m200. If money were an issue the m100 is a fine choice.

@@NoProJoe I have an M50, I love it. But I need a second camera to make B-roll. Well, M200 and M50 have the same problem with 4k. No dualpixel autofocus and crop image... Well, useless for me. Im consering M100, there is some used like half the price for an M200.
@NoProJoe
@NoProJoe 2 жыл бұрын
@@oqueeutofazendoaqui The M100 would be great for a second angle or b cam. M50 and it share the same sensor so matching footage is a breeze. The price savings is a plus for sure. If you're shooting 1080p the m100 is the way to go.

Hey dude great review! I just have one question if you don't mind asking. I got my M100 and I'm using the default lenses, I think it's more than great for me who never had a propper camera before, but I noticed the photos of my paintings, the greens are a lil dulled and bluish, not by much, but by enough to bother me. Is that a problem with the lenses or the camera sensor itself? I know I can edit the RAW, wich I did, but I think it's annoying and wanted a more accurate green. Thanks a bunch!
@NoProJoe
@NoProJoe 3 жыл бұрын
That’s generally a white balance issue. You can customize your white balance. These settings will apply to jpeds. Also the settings will be applied when using canons dpp software to RAW files. The best thing you can do is shoot in raw with your custom white balance and make a preset in Lightroom (if you use it) so it’s a one click fix for your balance problem. Different lenses do resolve color and contrast differently. The only short coming with the m in my opinion is the lack of higher end native lenses. The 18-150 is a pretty nice lens but the size kind of negates the compact m series. Perhaps the pancake 22 might be a good choice for you if you want to try a different lens. It’s a prime so you must zoom with your feet.
@raposadislexa

@@NoProJoe I've made a custom white balance, all the colors seem spot on... except that shade of green haha. I actually had to change the hue of the green aswell to fix it. What I wanted to know is if you noticed any significant color reproduction changes between the stock lenses and your Sigma one. Because if it actually improves I'm thinking in getting it, or maybe the 22mm but I don't know if you have it to verify. Btw I use Photoshop to edit raw files. Thanks once again!

I had a 7D MII and I truly miss it. It was a beast of a camera in many ways. It was super heavy but it was fast and the AF was amazing. I'd like to get my hands on an M5 for testing. I like the form factor on it. The added bonus of dual control dials is a definite plus.

I really like the M100. Lots of great value, especially if you got it on sale! It's a really great size and suits the basic needs really well. I went to Japan for two weeks with this camera and the 22mm and 55-200mm lens. Never used the 55-200. But the 22mm paired with this camera... talk about the PERFECT travel camera. It did everything it really needed to do and wasn't inconvenient to bring along. We were in a different city every few days and... being able to keep your load light works wonders. It's not the most powerful thing, but... does plenty fine at like 95% of the things you want it to do. It does struggle with low-light... but what did you expect?!
