I've had an M100 for 1.5 year, I also have this lens and indeed they were a great combo. The camera with the 22mm mounted on literally fits into a full frame lens bag. So portable, and the image quality is superb.

I just bought a M200 with 22mm and 15-45mm lenses off eBay, for pretty much the same reasons you got your current camera and lens, and am waiting for it to arrive. I already own a Sony a6600 with an 18-135 lens and am happy with it. But the main reason I bought the M200 was because I wanted a light, compact camera to take with me everywhere I go, and mainly for landscapes and street photography. Something I can stick in a pocket, if I want. As nice as the a6600 is, it's relatively heavy and bulky, and I'll reserve it for serious video work and landscape work where I will need a lens with more reach. The lack of a substantial zoom lens on the M200 isn't a problem, as with 24MP you can often crop pretty strongly if you need to, without much, if any, loss in quality. I'm also getting old, and really don't want to lug a lot of stuff around with me anymore if I don't absolutely have to. 'Work smarter, not harder', and 'keep it simple, stupid' are my mottos now. Mobile phones can shoot OK photos, but I find their control interfaces a bit fiddly, and if you need to increase the display brightness to manage shooting in bright sunlight, it kills the battery. Dynamic range often isn't all that great due to their tiny image sensors.

I actually use the M100 with the kit lens to shoot my videos and it's crystal clear, with the proper lighting of course. My mic is plugged in a separate recorder but that allows me to process the audio however I want. I was looking at the 22mm lens lately and your video convinced me to get one. Thanks!

I have this combo and I would totally agree with you. What we need most is a camera that look like a point and shoot camera but has all the capabilities to shoot great images. Its so easy to carry around that you can do it 24/7. Recently, I added the M6 Mk2 into the equation and that even surpasses many DSLR performance.

i've got this exact combo! it is a great camera to use, capture moments, and for me, for my usage, afterwards use as reference for paintings/drawings, this is the bang for my buck, now if you do want something of also a standard focal length, just going towards quite telephoto, i'd recommend the sigma 56mm 1.4 why? well, for subjects much further away from me, to get the same framing with this one, but on people and subjects not so close to me (literally and metaphorically) which in this pandemic might really come in handy! other than that, thanks Tom this was a huge help for me to get the m100, and later on this gorgeous 22mm lens, there isnt too many people praising this camera, and this review was one of the biggest ones that pushed me to get this which has been a love for me, hope you and your family find yourselves well!

The EOS M cameras are great fun, very small but powerful and very popular despite what the 'experts' (read we flog Sony) say on You Tube. The 22 f2 is a mini classic. Improvements I want - better contrast/highlight handling ( 4k for me and most users is pointless) and more lenses please !!

I have to say that i am Sony shooter and own lots of Sony gear and not having plans to change to M mount exclusively. TBS i owned this camera in couple of years and while af is not as good as on my Sonys and video isn't perfect either as you said. But i found my self enjoying this camera for both shooting video and photos more then i probably should. Simplicity but yet quality that you get with this with minimal effort is nowhere to be found on any other camera that i used. I use it just with 15-45 that came with it and never really needed to upgrade it for something else. Images are nice and sharp and colors are beautiful. Video is grate if you expose right and are fine with built in mic or recording externally. Just not try to try grade video too much.

Busso jetty at 4:45 :p I lived there for 5 years and have been living back in Canada the last 6. Just booked our flights for our first visit since and I just picked this camera up for my wife yesterday because we do alot of hiking trips and my dslr is just too large to pack for multi day. One advantage of owning gear like this is, Its ideal for street photography... you can blend in with crowd with such tiny gear... In case of DSLR, people do feel uncomfortable sometimes when you aim ur bulky DSLR with big zoom lens towards them... 😅 And also.. You can be dark-horse in a crowd full of apsc dslr owners 😂😂 I remember an incident when my friend baught used canon 60D with 18-135 zoom lens combo at price of brand new m200 just because he was firm beliver in bigger is better philosophy.. He later regret buying that gear & exchanged it later for used fuji x100f

If you’re mainly into taking photos then I wouldn’t bother with the M200 as the only addition is (cropped) 4K video. The M100 is a bargain monster that most people wrongly dismiss as a toy. Just make sure you stump up the extra cash for a fast prime lens like the 22mm f2 or the 32mm F1.4 (pricey) and you will slay Insta.

The M200 is also better in AF. The M100 can be in some situation very slow. I’m using M6II and also the M100. I recommend the M100 for standard still photography. For the price it’s a very good value.

If you value the convenience of sharing your content easily, you shoot mostly in good light and you're not bothered about ultimate image quality go for the phone. If you shoot often in low light, want to edit raw photos and want as good image quality as possible go for the camera.

The M100 with the 22mm has been a great replacement for my aging Panasonic GF1. As of 2023 I still haven't found a compact camera with interchangeable lenses that I would consider an upgrade to the M100. All of the Canon RF bodies are on the larger side, as are the newer camera bodies from Panasonic.

Great Review! I own the camera for about 1 year and is wonderful! The photo quality is gorgeous and more than enough for most users. Very good detail and nice colors. The video is a bit soft but still pretty nice. Especially for the social media, the dual pixel AF gets the job done! Highly recommended for beginners and on those with a tight budget. It's certainly VFM even in 2020. I was wondering for purchasing another lens other than the kitlens which is great for general uses and came up with 2 options : 1. 22m f2 lens (obviously) 2. EF 50mm 1.8 stm, aka Nifty Fifty + adapter (2ond market, so to be on the same budget, or even cheaper). What's your honest opinion?

I was thinking about getting this one for KZbin (my first camera ever) and it really let me down when you said that it wasn't very good for videos. Hi Beth! I have the Canon m100 and I would say that it is okay for videos (when using kitlens) ofc with the use of 22mm lens since its a prime lens you can only be on a certain distance from the camera to focus on you.. All of the videos in my channel including the m100 review and beyond that is shot in that camera. Ive had the camera for two years now and Id say its the perfect beginner camera

This camera is great for a beginner and it will certainly get you started with video. 1080p is more than acceptable if you don’t need 4K. I personally shoot in 1080p. The colours in video are as good as in stills - that is to say they are excellent, so you won’t need to do any colour grading. If you’re shooting on a tripod the absence of image stabilisation won’t be a problem, but if you want to roam around things will get shaky very quickly. That can make your videos look amateurish. Canon in lens stabilisation is ok, but it can’t beat the in body from the likes of Panasonic. Other options to look at would be the Panasonic G85 and the Sony A6100. Hope that helps.

Easiest way, Angel, is to convert your images to B&W in post. If you don't have any editing software (like Lightroom or Photoshop), you can get PhotoScape X for free and convert your images to B&W or gray scale. I do that all the time, and it's fun. For shooting choices, look for scenes with a lot of contrast (e.g. bright sun + shadow), normally a tough scene to shoot, but one that will look great in B&W. And yes, 200 Euros is a good deal, assuming the camera was not abused and it came with a lens. The 22mm is great, but the 15-45mm kit lens is very good, too. Remember, with an adapter you can mount all Canon's EF and EF-S lenses, too.

I can’t think why it wouldn’t but I’m not 100% sure. I use this camera mostly for photos and have no need for stabilisation. The slowest shutter speed I use is 1/60th of a second. The only video I do with this camera is when it’s on a tripod. I never do handheld video with it and wouldn’t recommend it for that.

The M100 does not have in-camera stabilization, so you must depend on the lens to give you that. Unfortunately the 22mm does not have IS. However, the kit lens (15-45mm) does have IS, and it's a good lens. And don't forget, with an adapter you can use all your EF and EF-S lenses on this camera.

Thanks for the video. I'm pretty sure i'm about to buy this camera as an upgrade from my Rebel t5 which is just way too heavy for me. I also take lots of pics of my kid so I get it!! I use my phone more often because of the portability you mentioned, which is one of my main considerations with this camera. It's a bit older of course, but it's as old as my T5 was when I got it, and it's been a great camera (I'll still hold onto it, maybe it has some benefits, like the viewfinder). I think you make lots of great points about this camera here! And as someone who doesn't do much serious video at all, I don't think the lesser video quality is a big drawback to me. I was trying to look at your other photos you've taken with this camera but the instagram you have linked wasn't showing up! Did you change the name? Thanks. :)

Thanks. I’ve never had any problems using the screen in bright sunlight. Then again, I’m not doing critical work with this camera - more casual snapshots - so if things are a little skew-if 24 megapixels are plenty for some corrective cropping.

Well, if they could fit 3 dials (aperture, shutter speed, ISO or exposure compensation - either one would be fine for me) this would be with me every day. I have this lens and the M50 which I love (but with only one dial -and a mode dial that could do so much more really) and it is so nice and small, just wish it could be even smaller. I shoot mostly manual anyway but I'm likely not the target audience 😂

I’m afraid that will be difficult due to lack of time at the moment. I don’t tend to use the kit lens much as I tend to favour prime lenses. From my limited experience the 15-45 is a perfectly acceptable kit lens. It’s nice that it’s small and light and it goes a bit wider than most kit lenses. Image quality is fine, but the relatively slow aperture will hold you back in low light. When purchased with a M body it’s a non brainer but I wouldn’t buy it separately.

When you say isn’t a DSLR do you mean doesn’t have interchangeable lenses? Or would you consider a mirror less camera with interchangeable lenses? Do you need to connect an external microphone? Would you be using the camera on a tripod or would you be walking around with it?

@@tomedwards81 Not a bulky camera, but like a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lens or not, but I think better with interchangeable lens. I don't think it is important to have external mic but if it does have, it would be good. But, a camera that has good internal mic would be better, I think. If it is a sit- down video, on a tripod, if it is vlog style, without. And I would want a wide angle lense too which would be great for vlogging. And I think it has to be APS-C.Thank you!

So now I am torn between the Conon eos m100 and the panasonic lumix gx880.. I know both are old, but I am a beginner so I want something easy to use as well.. But I can't decide between those two :/

Very similar. The differences are almost insignificant.

Almost the same. M200 had 4K video, but greatly cropped and no 50/60fps and cannot use duel pixel AF. Also, M200 had eye detect, and I guess that's nice. But none of the "improvements" from the M100 to the M200 were worth the extra cost to me. Since you already have the M200, you have the best of both cameras.

I just got this lens and attached it to my m100 but how do you get the wide angle out of it? You can spin the dial but it does not change to zoom in or out.

This isn’t a zoom lens; it’s a fixed focal length, so you can’t zoom in or out. You have to use your feet instead! It’s much sharper and faster than a zoom though. Did you get the kit lens with the camera as well? That’s a zoom.

I know it’s a mirrorless interchangeable camera, however the way in which I use it is more akin to a point and shoot, hence I tend to refer to it in such manner.

Yes, it's a point and shoot in its form factor and size. I heard one reviewer refer to it as a G7X with interchangeable lenses.

After many months of studies about this camera, I bought it at a higher price in January 2021 from Canon's authorized dealer in my country. Most essential movie feature, the frame rates - 24 fps and 60fps are missing!!! - - I bought the camera with many hopes, I am really disappointed and frustrated - - My main need was video/movie, but I couldn't achieve it! Anyone who reads this comment, please check everything

Thanks for watching. As I said in the video, I don't tend to shoot much video with this camera. But as I'm in a PAL country I have 25fps which is really no different to 24 😊

They will eventually but not for quite a long time. I still prefer the ergonomics of a real camera, even a simple one like the M100. Smartphones are definitely improving rapidly, but they’re not there yet!

@@tomedwards81 buying a camera that already come with a lens and then buying a lens that is almost the price of the whole kit is pretty dumb. why not buy a standalone camera and a lens separate? or even better buy a kit that already come with the lens that you want? with tax it almost come up to 1000$, you could buy a way better setup than this entry level camera with that money. its like buying a Toyota Corola and then spending another 20,000$ to get the engine swapped with a better one.

Do some digging and you'll see that the pros frequently spend way more on lenses than on camera bodies. Often it's just as cheap, or almost as cheap, to purchase a camera with a kit lens. Kit lenses can have their uses and can always be sold if not required. I'm fortunate in that I don't pay full retail for camera equipment due to my profession, so I didn't pay anywhere near $1000. To write this setup as 'entry level' is missing the point. Great results can be achieved with this pairing. The results speak for themselves.
