Yeah but is the colour balance? I don't think so. It's always trade offs with these two cameras, I own an A5100 and my daughter has a better Cannon. Thoughts are 1. The Sony tends to put greens to the fore colour balance wise compared to my daughters Canon. 2. Menu's are fiddly I love the A5100 but if Sony can sort out the two big issues above they would have a firejack winner. Given they will not if it was me buying today given my experience I would go Cannon.

But a hell lot of people still buy Canon because of the colour. Not only on skin tone , but also on things. That Sony Yellow-Green tint is atrocious. Also the basic colours of Yellow, Red, & Blue are better on Canon. Sony is catching up, but not on par with Canon.

bought 5100 a year ago, sold it, got G7x, never regretted it, and then a broken memory card messed up the reader, so I got M100 for the mean time and have been 10/10 loving it. Important note for overheating with the Sony a5100: I do use it quite regularly, and really the thing that makes the camera overheat is the AF. When I was using it with my old 70s telephoto lens at a wedding, I recorded for almost 30 minutes, it wasn’t exactly cold, and the camera did not overheat. So simply by switching to MF, this Problem can be fixed.

Question. For recording drawing demos (lines on white paper= light setting) which one would you choose. To me the Sony had the better image quality, but with a constantly moving hand I wouldn't want the lense to pick up on the hand motion but on the line motion. Any tips on that? Also, did you mention a limit on their video recording time? Thank you!

Great video. I have the A5100 and it's a little beast. I moved up to the A6500 but I still love the little guy and it takes some surprisingly high quality stills. From your video, the A5100 looks clearer than the M100 (not by much) but the microphone on the Canon sounds significantly better IMO. Keep up the good work!

Good comparison but i would not pick either of these. The lack of a headphone jack is a dealbreaker. You could pick up almost any other canon m series camera and it would have a headphone jack. With that said there are more low cost aftermarket lenses for the sony lineup.

Canon ecosystem all day. I sold my Sony because the lens ecosystem was a bit more expensive. If you want more than a few lenses, the adapter is worth the $.

The Sony A5100 just has a more true to life - crisper image, and at the end of the day, if that is important to you - Sony wins, but its a bit more than the sensor, it depends on which lenses were used in this video, which the Every day dad does not state. Could be that the Canon lens used in this video was not a very sharp one. The Canon colours and resolution in this video was clearly not as good as the Sony. But if your audience is viewing this on a mobile phone, like many do, it may not make much of a difference. I just moved on to a Sony NEX F3 which is about similar in image quality to a Sony A5100 (not far off) and one of my lessons is that all camera manufacturers deliberately cripple their mid range cameras to avoid hurting sales of their higher end products such as their full frame digital hybrid cameras (video and photo) or their cinema cameras. On my Sony, lacking a number of buttons and wheels to directly go to certain functions, without having to navigate a menu is a pain. This is where long term it would be great to have more dials and buttons especially ones which I can access directly without having to go through a menu. From what I have experienced, no number of videos will ever give you the full experience. I found so many little cripple hammers on my Sony such as ISO starting at 200, inability to reduce shutter speed below 1/160th of a second when flash is enabled, and more, little irritating deliberate crippling behaviors which are totally unnecessary, which would propel you to upgrade to a higher level camera, but until you try out that higher end camera, you do not know what else has been locked out or crippled on that higher end camera. Simple things like changing exposure compensation take a few more clicks or button presses than if I had a dial immediately accessible for such key functions, ideally I would like things like - flash type, aperture, shutter speed, ISO and exposure compensation, to be immediately accessible via their own wheel or button, but of course this would add to the cost. And some Sony APSC cameras need you to connect to the camera to charge the battery cos an external charger is not provided with the camera - which has charging via USB port., needing you to buy an external charger - minor irritation, if you'd like to e.g have more than one battery - just an irritation to have to buy a charger as an extra item. And if you charge the camera directly via USB, the camera has to be off - unusable, until charge is completed - kinda counter intuitive - with external charger and more than one battery, you can be out taking pics or videos, and charger is charging a second battery. I would strongly advise - go to a store that has one of these on demo (in a world without the pandemic), or find where you can rent the camera for a day or two and try it out in your own home/studio without pressure to discover how it works in the real world - your world. So you can discover the limitations of the camera you intend to own, - every camera has limits, the question is - which limits have been stealthily undisclosed by the manufacturer, waiting to trip you up, cos you assumed that they were not there. No magazine or KZbin video will show you the pitfalls that apply to your scenario - so use KZbin presenter like this as a very broad introduction- until you can try the product out for your self. For example, there is no undo - on delete of photos on the Sony - I accidentally deleted all my test shots - thankfully nothing important was lost, but that would be such a major issue. No undo for accidental deletions - none. Sadly the only way in 1st world countries to achieve this is to buy one, demo it and then return it if you do not like it.. It would be so wonderful if one could loan one for about 2 or 3 days for maybe £50 or $50 and if you chose to buy it, you only pay the difference - return the loaner camera and you receive your own brand new one. From a strategic perspective - Canon has a huge history of creating products with much better tactile productivity - with buttons and switches and knobs in the right place - from a camera users point of view and their core design ethos has been copied by everyone else. But the Sony look and clarity of image - borne out also by measurements done by DXOMark, is so much more accurate - to me. I would prefer to have access to the excellent more comprehensive range of Canon lenses. The Canon R series is a compelling roadmap, cos we all intend to grow and aim for bigger better things. The one weakness of all APS-C mirrorless cameras is their grip - all the Sony and Canon APS-C mirrorless cameras feel like toys, lots of plastic. and thin plastic at that, would not survive any serious fall. If at the end of the day you are still going to add a hefty lens for low light capability and more bokeh, to replace the kit lens with something with a max aperture no smaller than f/2, such lenses tend to dwarf the dinky rangefinder style bodies. One of the things that will most likely make me move to a higher end Canon DSLR is the grip and balance. I never thought I would say this ever - never. The form factor of Canon's R cameras sacrifices some of this chunky grip and replaces the nice large visible screens on a DSLR with something a bit smaller. I like the handling of a bigger body - really helps to steady things especially when you are shooting hand held. The metal body and thicker plastic Canon DSLR's just feel so much more like a serious tool, than anything Sony has made in their digital camera lineup and that comment applies to the A7 series - also - I see myself getting a vintage Canon DSLR like a 5D mark 2 or 6D mark 2 for photography, these range finder body style cameras from Sony APSC and full frame or the M series APS_C from Canon are ok for video - cos they'll be on a tripod or gimble anyway rather than being hand held. to the absence of a proper grip may not be material, cos you will rarely shoot any proper video holding these toy grips, in a video scenario - unless you are vlogging, and even at that I expect most vloggers to use some form of external stabilisation like a gimble, so they are never ever in need of holding the camera itself during their vlog. For photo - different game - so much of this is now done hand held. - where the grip makes a huge difference to me. SO for serious video - I'd go Sony digital mirrorless as a starter, and for serious photography definitely a Canon DSLR with a metal body and a good grip with superb LCD screen on top for immediate feedback without having to look at any screens, and the benefit of an optical view finder as standard/with the option to sue live view - if I want to. I think the whole quagmire of trying to fit it all into one camera is a disservice - who says you need a hybrid camera? - no one. Hybrid efforts bring with it too many compromises - best to pick two different tools that are purpose built for what they do. I'd rather carry two cameras that did what they do best, than force myself into compromises trying to fit it all into one camera. Every camera manufacturer is a lock in attempt. Every one. So choose the one with the least infringements to your consumer rights and privileges, and the least compromises to your intended way of life.

You got kinda the same picture from your M100 as from GH5 (white balance/purple light behind you) and you are saying that you like Sony's low light better. Words sounds apposite of the video I guess in this case. Plus seems like focal length was different too on a5100 and m100 because on m100 your face took almost the whole frame compare to a5100.

I know this is a budget comparison, but I'm surprised you got rid of your Canon M50, it checks all the boxes except for 4k video, also not that expensive, can be had for a little over $500. I have been wanting the A5100 for quite some time and since I already shoot with the A6000 it would be easy to get used to, BUT the external audio recording requirement just stops me every time only because the type of videos I do is run and gun following kids and being all over the place and having to push two buttons every time I record is just more work, especially in post. I want to stay with Sony because I know it so well and I can rely on it, but without flippy and mic input jack...the M50 looks better and better.

Canon's footage looks very mushy compared to Sony. Also, Sony records at a much higher bitrate of 50mbps in XAVCS which is very grading friendly (for eg. XAVCS allows some highlight recovery in post, upto 0.5 stops, but H.264 has baked-in white values).

Canon won’t let you film more than 10 minutes at a time, so it can’t overheat. You just start the video up again and you’re fine
