CANON M50 FOR VIDEO - IS IT GOOD ENOUGH?

This is the video I've been looking for. Everyone loves to trash 4k in the M50 because of losing auto focus and the crop. Speed booster, plus manual focus=The M50 is crazy good for a great price, which means more money for more lenses. I'm gonna make a movie with this camera. I know this review is old but this is definitely one of the better videos out there about the M50. Everyone seems to bash on this camera only because of the 4k crop and losing dual af but you guys found an easy work around in your review which is extremely beneficial for people that bought this camera like myself. I myself bought this camera for 3 major reasons: the first was the price, the second was the size and the third was the ability to purchase the af adapter which opens the door to so many great Canon lenses....which I'm sorry, is the reason why Canon is one of the best camera manufacturers out there to begin with. Last thing that everyone seems to leave out is that for $700 you're actually getting a really good camera that takes great photos.

I have been using the M50 for about three weeks for KZbin and pictures. I am a retiree and it's small size make it an excellent tool. I am really surprised at how good the auto shooting mode for both video and picture taking is. It's decision really help it to capture what my eye sees. For me that is high praise.

I went for 200D, cheaper, lens mount suitable for all my L lenses, size is bit bigger and comfortable, same ergonomics, and I still think that if your content sucks, it doesn't matter how many K's you have, good content will be watched even in 480p.

i'm a proud owner of this little camera. picked up the 18-200 lens as well. Great for 1080 video, focus works awesome. 4k.... ah it's ok if you know what your doing. 720 is kind of odd and i find it pointless. Rear screen is a great flippy vlogging type screen. Also takes timelapse!! I mean there is a lot of bang for your buck there.

This is a nice video...I'm yet to get the fuss over 4k really. 1080p works just fine and 1080p with 60fps is magic in the hands of someone who understands cameras well. Anything above 1080p is nothing but a marketing gimmick. Not many people shoot or consume 4k. We are not there yet

The M50 is great with the Viltrox EF-M2 speedbooster and the combination is just as described... magical. FYI the speedbooster can be purchased at Walmart for under $70 online. I was blown because after the purchase of the camera and an additional lens I couldn’t afford it at $150 Amazon price.

I got this camera to replace my 7D MKII , how do y’all feel about the upgrade... downgrade? I find it to be capable of everything I was doing with the dslr, but in a much smaller package with a flip screen and WiFi capability. I got the adapter and used the same lenses. I know there’s a crop but when you’re shooting, it doesn’t matter to the point where mindset is that you’re always limited by your equipment so you adapt.

I would say there are many, MANY technical aspects to taking good looking video other than resolution and detail. Casey is actually quite a good example - even if he does shoot in "only" 1080p, he gets some really interesting shots. I would consider framing, aperture, all artistic qualities much more important than detail in 4k. Especially to advanced beginners, who the m50 is mostly aimed at.

It is kind of funny that Canon have admitted in a public statement that they actually crippled the 4k functionality in this camera to protect their higher end cameras. I am sure it could do 4k with minimal crop because of that new processor. Canon has also said it does have a Canon M5 mkII scheduled for release first quarter of 2019 that should have almost no limitations to 4k. The question is if they will keep that flip-out screen. A big bonus is that microphone jack and high bitrate mp4 files. I think I am going to get this camera as it is good enough for me as I mostly take casual photos and videos. I am tired of waiting for Sony APS-C refresh and it will also probably be to expensive now as they seem to have dumped the cheap APS-C lineup anyway.

You guys have great m50 videos. I tested out hooking up my m50 to my capture card for live streaming, but I couldn't find a way to turn off the 30 minute sleep function. After 30 minutes of screen on time it just turns off unless someone presses a button every 29 minutes or so. Do you know if there's a work around for that?

I have a continuous power ac adapter. This isnt a power issue. Even going into power saving and disabling the auto shut off it does not stop the auto sleep with a maximum sleep setting of 30 minutes and no ability to disable. Please let me know how to fix this.

You should try and talk to Canon about this, it might just need a firmware update to fix that problem as it is not related to that 30min record time limit that EU has imposed on a lot of devices. Could also be a bug in the firmware perhaps. I also heard someone say they wanted a clean HDMI out signal but you had to do a few things to get it to work.

nearly all cameras are limited to 29minutes 59 seconds of recording at a time because if you can officially record longer with it, the manufacturer would have to tax it as a broadcast camera! . there are software hacks to bypass it, you just have to watch out for the heat .

I just shot a talking head video sort of similar to this in 4k and I clearly did something totally wrong- as the autofocus was going bananas. Every 5-10 seconds, even though I was relatively still, it just couldn't track me. I was so frustrated, but seeing this vid in 4k makes me think I need to ensure all my settings were dialed in properly!

Yes, unfortunately the AF is trash. So make sure when you are shooting 4k, to NOT use AF and only use manual focus.

Because I shoot alone I bought a styrofoam mannequin head ($10) and stuck it on a $20 light stand (both on Amazon) so I could manually focus on where I will be standing.

The best one for canon lenses is the official canon one! Other than that, you can use just basic adapters to anything.

GREAT info videos guys... I use 5D mkIV's and invested in one of these as a tiny/portable/handheld type unit - I'm actually amazed with how good it is - I've purchased 2 lenses and the EF adaptor. It works very well in video as long as you don't shoot over 800 ISO - any of the higher ISOs... unless you really need them, you'll have to work hard (Neat Video) to get them back to a good looking piece of footage - overall though Its a great little unit and Amazing Bang for dollars - I'd definitely recommend purchasing one and the EF-M to EF adaptor is a must if you are a Canon shooter and have lots of there glass.

You should really look into the Canon M6 mark ii, and then get these lenses... Sigma 16mm EF-M Mount, and Canon 11-22mm EF-M, and finally the Canon kit lens 18-55mm. These 3 lenses are the Canon M Series 'Holy Trinity'.

And actually, you can buy a certified refurbished M6 Mark ii from canon's website for about $675. And can find other refurbished M mount lenses too, saving money!

It's really not much of a low light camera. It's better than other crop sensor canon cameras, but its nowhere near a sony or full frame camera.

KittFPV Go for M50. The touch drag auto focus feature to track is a gem. The 45AF pts on 77D, 800D and 80D is pointless because of the lack of Joystick. M50 have a slightly better IQ as well.

@@granthoover9045 yes after contacting Canon directly it is a protection feature they put in on mirrorless cameras to prevent image burn, overheating, and other factors. So I use it for great stills, under 30 minute livestreams. For longer livestreams I use a Sony handycam.

Also the 30 minute thing seems to do with a classification thing where if it records longer than 30 minutes it falls under a different category of camera? If you happen to figure out if it will give you a clean out with auto focus off will you send me a quick message? There’s a video from Elgato cam link showing them using the camera as a webcam so I’m a little confused what the actual story is. Thanks brother

Shoot in 1080p, and upsample that footage to 4K so KZbin plays back the video at a higher bitrate!

I want to love this camera but im put off by the fact one has to buy extra accessories just to make this camera work to a certain higher level. I mean, lenses are already expensive, adapter, the other accessories you mentioned does not sound like a budget friendly camera (black friday sale it fits my budget). I think im better off getting the Sony Alpha a6000? Im not sure.
