Thank you for this. I used Clog 3 at the weekend outdoors and personally found it could handle more light and needed it in most cases. The shots that were overexposed by a stop looked the best in post. I didn't have time for an 18% grey card at 35 IRE but I will try it in the future to see when time allows. The shots that were even slightly underexposed looked pretty rough though thats for sure in the shadows.

Yikes, this comment is 8 months late, but I just got my R6 last week and just like you I wanted the R5 for video but im gonna wait until the R5c is released to spend $5k on a camera. The R5 is what i call a sleeping beauty, so much potential limited by poor components (on the video side of things) the overheating makes it impossible to shoot video at higher frame rate (60+). The R5c will be vented and rumored to be the first canon camera to be capable of unlimited video time so Im waiting with my fingers crossed. The R5 is otherwise an absolute beastly stills camera but a head banger with video.

Dear all, Last week I did some tests about Clog and its color correction. I shot at home in a mixed-light environment: from the windows I got natural diffused day light and on the ceiling I had a 3200k lamp. I did all the test recording on an Atomos Ninja V+ recording in H.265 HQ. I shot the same set on C-log3 and then Normal (C-log OFF). Obiovusly setting the corrected exposure for both the formats (using the histogram and false color on the Atomos). Well... to be totally honest the Normal mode looked SO MUCH BETTER than the C-log one! When I say "looked better" I mean its color correction. I did a quick color correction on Premiere Pro and the C-log3 clip had a terrible yellow tone and the darkest areas were very grainy. On the other side the Normal shot had a very natural color look and the darkest areas (even if visible) were totally grain free. Of course the ISO was lower on the Natural (around 320/400) while it was higher on the C-log3 (1600). Now... if every professional shooters of the world ONLY shoot C-log there would be a good reason... I'm not stating here I'm better than others or I know more than others... but the results is evident! So... what did I do wrong? Thx Miki
@cammackey2 жыл бұрын
You’re process is wrong. Minimum ISO for clog 3 is 800. 2nd, clog 1 is basically a flat standard color. With clog 3 you can put the camera in canon gamma log or whatever it’s called. It’s gives you even mroe color depth. But with more color depth, it requires more knowledge when grading. You can’t use the same LUTs for both of them, they require two totally different LUTs and require different workflows. It’s this reason canon doesn’t out clog 2 on these cameras because it takes even MORE work on top of all of that and they rather not deal with customers blaming the camera rather themselves. Also, to do actual indepth tests, I’d recommend trying out davinci. The color grade engine lets you push the files way further than premier will ever do.

Hi Cam, If I could ask a question, Clog3, really like the extra DR over the Clog1…… BUT On my EOS R it has a lovely golden skin tone and colour science that looks great, but on my R3 it is a horrid red Magenta cast in the skin tones. If i correct for it in white balance, it send the rest of the image blue cast. Which I don’t like. Now the R3 doesn’t have Clog1, but I need to match the cameras. Does colour space affect this or any other settings? Currently my Canon cameras are worlds apart on colour. Any tips to address this? Much appreciated, can’t seem to find any vids on this topic on YT. 🤔 So came to the expert. 😀

Seriously, thanks Cam, real talk. How can people by so (don't want to use the word dumb) but this is how you should be exposing all the shots. On the histogram. Screen brightness is just that, it varies, and is not what the sensor is actually seeing. If you are doing pro work i.e. you should know this. The main difference is the base ISO. I have a couple of questions. I never shoot in LOG because I’m afraid that I’ll get footage that is unusable if not exposed correctly. But since my new R6 only shoots in 10 bit on CLOG, I want to give CLOG 3 a shot. First, I mainly enjoy shooting travel videos, so things are shot fast and don’t really have time to have ideal lighting situations. I always try to expose for skin tone. So for scenes where there’s not a lot of contrast, using your histogram example, do I just expose for the highlights and make sure they’re not clipped on the right, but keep them as close to the right as possible? And second, for high contrast scenes (e.g. trying to expose for skin tone and there’s a bright, sunny background behind them), do I use the histogram the same or do I treat it differently because I’d expect the background to blow out anyways? Any help would be appreciated!

Do you think checking the exposure meter on the screen when you half press the shutter is a good indicator if the video is exposed properly for CLOG3?
@cammackey3 жыл бұрын
Noooooooooo. Never use photo metering tools for video. That’s number one no no. Photo metering tools are set to meter from spot, centered, or evaluative.. none of them are actually telling you what’s going on in your scene when shooting video. When shooting g raw photos we have way more information to play with so video is jsut a different beast that we cannot cheat like we can with photos. Histograms will show you a more detailed view of what’s going on in your exposure. If you get an external monitor they’ll give you extra tools like waveforms that’ll help you even more

I tested with 8k raw and turned it into clog3 and saw less noise. Is it supposed to be like this or am I doing something wrong? I put both clips on iso 800
@waynosfotos3 жыл бұрын
One thing people are not aware of is, it is the same sensor doing exactly the same thing. All you are doing is giving up contrast at the centre point to gain highlights at the extreme. So you loose variation at the centre points. There is no free lunch, this "may" introduce noise, but can diffinitely introduce banding if filming in low light. Never use log settings in controlled lighting or low lighting settings, you are comprimising the sensitivity of the sensor reducing contrast detail.
@cammackey3 жыл бұрын
You’re looking at it all wrong. First, highlight recovery is wrong. Clog 3 shifts the dynamic range while also giving you an extra stop. So you EXPOSE DIFFERENTLY than you would with regular clog. Second, raw is raw. You can change it to clog 1, 2, 3.. the noise will all be similar because it’s raw. It all comes down to how the specific log requires you to expose.
@RealJoshuaSe3 жыл бұрын
At first I do thought that Clog3 has more noise than Clog1, however after some testing, I find that if you expose slightly brighter than how you usually expose for Clog1 and crush the black on post, the image will be just as clean.
