I purchased my R5 a few months ago for still photography. I've been asked to shoot a few videos recently. The first one I did a few weeks ago I didn't have a clue what I was really doing with all the options available on this camera!! So, now I'm binging on KZbin videos to get a handle on things before Friday evening and I first came across your video on dual ISO and was amazed for many reasons. Now I watched this one as I was trying to decide what format to shoot in. After watching it I started wondering how the dual ISO aspect plays into what you explained here? Specifically, I will be starting an outdoor video of a small concert in a backyard about ninety minutes before sundown. How would you recommend managing my ISO as it gets darker? I don't have a variable density filter and I think it's too late to get one by then, but may try. If you happen to see my post I'd appreciate any advice you, or anyone, could offer me. Thanks

I haven't noticed any real differences in dynamic range. If you are in a situation where you have to do an extreme push (for instance if a shot is 3 stops underexposed) you will tell a small difference. Great videos; as a fresh R5 owner subscribed today, to keep up & learn tips and tricks for my new gear. So, here's my problem: Invested in the camera, yet the PC I'm currenty using is quite old, therefore cannot process and color correct RAW video files, especially under DaVinci Resolve. So I am forced - at least for a while - to work with compressed files. Therefore please, would you recommend us a "flat" picture style setting mode (or a custom combination of sharpness, contrast etc) which will still allow us to get the most color correction when working with an mp4 (meaning compressed) file? I hope my request makes sense, as English is not my native language. Thanks in advance.

Is there any color difference once you need to color grade, between both ?
@DeafDirector2 жыл бұрын
They both grade almost identical unless you are really pushing the grade very hard. I would also recommend using ALL-I if you are going to be doing any type of green screen or compositing, but as long as you capture a proper exposure, for 98% of what you shoot, you will not really be able to tell any difference between the two. Have a great day!

If this was 4K HQ I don’t think you’d see a difference with 8K much, but if it is 4K HQ you’ll see a HUGE difference compared to 1080 cause of line skipping… so not sure if it’s HQ or not for these tests

@@charliemotion2819 I recently shot a commercial, where about 80% of the shots where standard 4K at 60fps, and I was able to shoot on the camera over the course of 12 hours and only had the camera overheat on me once. I switched over to my GH5 and I was able to get back on my R5 it within 10 minutes. For a wedding, I'd probably be a little more nervous. You can't ask people to wait for your camera to cool down on those days. I think you could do it, but I would defintiely have a second body of some sort with me. It's a unfortunate reality with the R5 that the 60fps, will eventually overheat. Good luck

@@DeafDirector I do appreciate you putting this video out there for us. I have really learned something new with R5. Concerning 4K overheating, I think if you shoot in 4K non-HQ mode at @60p using NinjaV, R5 will not overheat. Have you tried that, Sir?
@DeafDirector3 жыл бұрын
@@josephboateng4037 thanks so much for the tip. I found that in my real world experience when I shoot standard 4K (non 4KHQ) at 60fps I am usually doing work that requires me to pretty consistently have to access my LCD or viewfinder which leads to overheating, even if I am using my Ninja V+. That being said, standard 4K at 24fps has never overheated on me, even when I had the R5 recording an interview for more than 4 hours straight. Hey man, recently started watching your videos... I run a camera gear related channel called 'Power of Drew' and I flip through camera systems a lot. My A-Cam though doesn't switch which is the Canon C70. That said, I ended up selling the a7s3 because I HATED the color science, and get the Canon R5 tomorrow. How has the overheating issues bothered you? I do not run long-form content. And if I did, my C70 would do so... but as. B-Cam. What are your thoughts?
@DeafDirector3 жыл бұрын
Always great to hear from another content creator, I know how much work you put into your channel! This is a great question with a complicated answer. I actually really love my R5 for video, but there is definitely a learning curve in figuring out how much you can push and get out of the camera in regards to overheating. As a dedicated B-Cam that you would be using in short dedicated bursts, paired with a C70 I think this will be a great combo. The R5 autofocus actually is a little better than the c70 and c300 mk3, so you will probably really like that. The image quality is great in 4KHQ, and depending what you need as B Cam applications the Standard 4K might work for you, too. In my real world applications, I have found that I can usually work around the overheating issues, but I have still found myself frustrated a number of times when the camera needs me to wait 10 minutes to shoot. I have found huge improvements in overheat times in the way I shoot with firmware 1.4.0 which lets me set Stanby:Low Res. The other thing about the R5 as a potential B Cam is that if you are okay with standard 4k (not 4KHQ) it will NEVER overheat on you in 24 or 30fps. If I were you, I would do some real world camera tests to see if the Standard 4K can work for your BCam footage, because that would save huge overheat worrying for you. I have actually shot a number of professional jobs with Standard 4k, and my clients were always happy, and I never had to worry about losing the camera to overheating on a shoot. All in all, I think the R5 would be a great BCam to a C70. I hope that helps, thanks so much for the comment and have a great day!

@@DeafDirector Fantastic response. As a content creator myself, I make responding to my little community top priority, so when I see other channels doing the same it absolutely makes me smile. Thanks. That said, I do not do a ton of vlogging for my stuff, however my plan of action is here: 4k Standard: Vlogging shots, the typical walk-in-talk stuff. Also for filler shots, potentially for any long-form running content, as a second angle for the c70. 4k HQ: In studio, in house, talking head stuff for another camera angle to the c70 4k 120: Obviously for the slo-mo goodness when needed... I dont do a ton of this. Very seldom. But use it when I need to . Bottom line: I got the A7s3 because I assumed it would be a perfect pairing to the c70, since "on paper" its a beast, and fills in the size gaps that the c70 unfortunately is a little to large to use. I however, find the IQ to be "clinical" or too clean maybe? Too digital? Also as stated before, I HATED the color science... which I dont want to spend hours color grading to match the beautiful C70 IQ. Follow-up question: Have you tried doing a tiny bit of post sharpening to the standard 4k? Obviously riding that fine line before it gets too digital looking? Finally: From one content creator to another... THANK YOU for your time and effort making these videos... I find our genre of KZbin is the most time-consuming because we care so much about the quality of the content we are producing.

P.S. Forgot to also ask. What about IPB-Light? Did that improve overheating at all? And, have you tried using a battery grip? My thoughts would be that maybe since the battery isn't slotted directly into the camera that maybe the BG-R10 might help a little?

@@AndrewKuttor I haven't noticed any overheating difference with the CODECs, but the battery grip may help out. The biggest culprit I found in the overheating was the LCD and EVF, but it can't hurt to try the dummy grip.

@@DeafDirector No I'm saying there's irony in that you can't tell that the 8k is a higher resolution than 4k, which defeats the point of 8k in my eyes. I love your channel and tone. @@CanditoTrainingHQ Gotcha! The quality of that 4kHQ downsampling that 8k Sensor is nice. Where I have personally been find ing the role of the 8K comes in (because the quality is so similar to the 4kHQ) is when I have a client that wants me to deliver photography and video for a job. The nice thing about the 8K is that it is the equivalent of about a 36MP photo, so if I am tight on time, it's nice knowing I can double up and get print size stills from my video capture. I still try to capture my photos separately, but there have been some times (in tight schedules) that this method has saved the day. Have fun out there shooting!
