Good video. I think you hit the important points about the usability and what makes the R5C a good camera, and (side note) I especially agree with Sony looking like jaundice, it's why I was reluctant to switch even though I think their cameras in the past were better designed for video use. Having used both C70 and the R5C and I think the R5C is a lot more user friendly ergonomically and flexible with the full frame field of view, and I especially like the image quality better in the R5C since the C70 is pretty soft image wise. Have used the R5C in a bunch of different situations, and really happy with what does.

I increased my speeds for the focusing and it fixed the issues of not being in focus even though the box was tracking properly.
@ChristianSantiagophoto2 жыл бұрын
I did the same but I also noticed that doing so made the camera hunt for the background when I’d walk out of the frame in the face only mode. I got much better results with the slower speeds. And I also find the slower speeds give a much more pleasing transition when you’re walking back and forth. The higher speeds snap to focus right away. Which is great if you’re doing events and such and just need to lock focus but not the most pleasing results for more “cinematic “ aesthetic. But 100% the second you do any type of movement with increased speed and acceleration you should bump up the settings to the max.
@NathanPhillipsPhoto2 жыл бұрын
@@ChristianSantiagophoto going to run that test again and see if mine does the hunting in fast speeds. I referenced from the atomos. Might be a different story in post. Thanks a lot

Great first impression video! That distinction from "review" and "first impression" of a product is really missed in video titles. Love to see you getting more on camera and sharing your skill and experience with the world bro. Cant wait for the full review of it to really see what you're able to get out of this camera. Ill be looking for how you rig it up for that battery issue and editing workflow. Im subscribed and the notification bell is set! Love bro ✊🏽

Dude FANTASTIC video. Super informative and balanced. Really helping me. I’m in the market for a good video camera, trying to choose between R5C & FX3. Already have 3 canon lenses and a 5D Mark IV so it’s a tough one. Love the canon colours but love Sonys frame rates AF and FULL SIZE HDMI. Decisions… Keep up the good work man. Subscribed. 🏆

That’s one thing I neglected to mention, but that micro hdmi is a fucking joke. Can’t comprehend why canon would put that in a “professional cinema camera “

Good video. For my money I choose the Canon EOS R3, over the R5C. The battery life is a drain when I want to pack small. Dynamic range of the R3 is about the same as the C70 and rolling shutter is much better than both. High ISO performance is best in class. Beating even the Sony A7SIII. Lastly, battery life is great on the EOS R3. Will it replace my Komodo? Nope. Komodo is just a different animal. In my experience my Komodo is no harder to setup on the Ronin RS2 than anything else. I frequently use the smartphone app… which is much better than the horrible Canon app. The two are complimentary. That said weather Red Komodo, Canon R3, R5C, Sony or Nikon… all are more than good enough to tell a compelling story with. It’s really just a matter of personal choice. One last thought: I would truly love to see built in eVNDs on these cameras. At these price points it should be standard. Keep up the good work!

I literally had the R3 in one hand and the R5c in the other when making my decision. Aganozied over it for days and almost regretted my decision. Ultimately it was the size and the 10bit XF-avc codec that won me over as all I ever wanted from the R5 was an efficient high-quality codec with great playback speed. And since architectural photography makes up a huge chunk of my income, I also needed a camera with a higher resolution sensor since I often used the R5 as my backup/ second camera on commercial architectural shoots to my FUJI GFX. Although the backside-illuminated sensor on the R3 also makes some very nice looking photos I find the komodo very difficult to balance on the Rs2 and don't entirely trust the AF on it. For gimbal work, I want a set it and forget it a camera that's just gonna track what I am following and call it a day. And I have not had the best experiences with the App. Sometimes it works great, but it's not consistent, and too many times it's just been unable to get a feed to the phone. This means rigging a monitor on the gimbal too, which at that point, really starts to get annoying on those one-handed pistol-grip gimbals. I am more than happy to leave the Komodo rigged out in its Handheld-Tripod orientation and have the smaller, lighter R5C be the gimbal cam. Especially since the RAW should match well enough, and you're usually not doing long takes on a gimbal, so even the internal battery shouldn't be much of an issue as you still get about 45 min on it. Low light performance is a wash for me and not that big a deal. I rarely ever shoot above base ISO in video and above 100 in photos. And even when I do, all of these cameras nowadays can handle 3200-5000 iso with no issue. And having the DUAL native ISO on the R5C should be a very appealing option should I ever need it.

Dude, my RED EPIC DRAGON fell into a fountain today. Devastated. Waiting to hear back from the insurance company to see what they will do. Might be in the boat of getting a camera around this price range. Komodo and R5C are the 2 at the top of the list I'm comparing. Appreciate the thoughts. still a tough decision. Hard to give up RED's raw flexibility and ease of use. Still keep feeling like the bump in image quality really is noticeable. But, less rigging, better auto features, 8K could be attractive to some clients for pulled frames from final vids, more frame rates, full frame sensor, and a true amazing photo camera... all has me leaning back onto the R5C.

Red Komodo $8,500 / R5C $4,799. There's a $3700 difference. I don't think it's fair to compare them. With that being said, the R5C seems to be in the ballpark in overall features & image quality.

Nice video. How come you got rid of your FX6? You didn't have that for too long did you. Do you just prefer Canon in general (I know you mentioned the colours) or do you need a hybrid as you like your photography.

never heard anyone say that balancing the komodo on rs2 is annoying. Glad youre honest about it!
@ChristianSantiagophoto2 жыл бұрын
It depends on how you rig it. But I need a monitor and I’ve never found a comfortable, efficient way to balance and rig it onto the one handed pistol style of the rs2. Especially when you’re using a heavy prime. I always preferred using the R5 on the gimbal. But now I can do that and get closer to the reds image quality.

Thanks for your impressions on the R5C. Why goodbye to the C70? And your thoughts on highlight roll off between the two?
@ChristianSantiagophoto2 жыл бұрын
The c70 highlight rolloff is beautiful. The R5c is inferior to it in that regard. But the R5c makes better use of my RF glass and is better in a lot of the areas that matter to my workflow. Honestly having second thoughts about selling the c70 too after revisiting footage from it for this review lol.

@@ChristianSantiagophoto What’s your point? My point was that you said (and you’re not the only one) that DR doesn’t matter too much for you because you’re usually in light controlled environments. Which makes people believe that that is the main reason to chose a higher DR camera.
@ChristianSantiagophoto2 жыл бұрын
@@artwerkmedia8616 gee I didn’t realize you or anyone else is locked into following my priorities and personal workflow preferences. For some ppl retaining information is the reason to go for a higher DR camera. If you shoot a lot of real estate content or outdoors in uncontrolled environments it’s a legit concern. For others smoother highlights on skin tones are more of priority. For my clients and the work I do, I care more about how the camera functions for ME and can live with a slight downgrade in DR Let ppl decide for themselves what matters most to them and don’t lose sleep over it. Good review. I think the same, just going out to film a pretty girl or a couple of landscapes is not enough to say that a camera is good. I bought the Panasonic S5 a few weeks ago and I'm still testing it, it has many good things and some that are a bit annoying, but I know it's an excellent camera that has very good features. I'm testing it with a gimbal, camera in hand, on a tripod, in many ways to get the most out of it.
