I really don't know what to say. The Canon R5C is real good. Also, a side note - the Komodo may have been a smidge less exposed compared to the Canon in these tests, making that green shift more prominent. It's not usually that bad. More Canon R5C content to come!

Great video! But I think you need to double check your data rate conversions and the difference between megabytes (MBs) vs megabits (Mbps). Red raw data rates on their own site states up to 280 MBs in HQ and 110MBs in LQ. That is the equivalent of 2240 Mbps and 880 Mbps. Canon raw data rates are listed in Mbps and in 8k raw range from 836 Mbps (8k24p raw light to 2570 Mbps (8k60p raw). So it actually gives you more time. On their web page red actually gives you times with a 512gb card and red actually has higher data rates compared to r5c in 8k raw

I've been using an R5C for over a year and I love it. I've also been shooting on vintage Ironglass lenses. I just watched this to see if I was missing something by not shooting RED. I'm not really seeing a meaningful difference in the end. If I can't see a difference, regular people sure aren't going to notice. The lenses make a bigger difference I think!

Love the R5c. I’m trading one of my C70s for another one. The image and functionality ar3 stellar. The short comings are fixable. Battery and micro hdmi. I use the cable protector that came with the camera. It’s badass and thrown to the side by most. Great work.

The R5C could also be your A cam for stills, which is really quite amazing! I use an R5 and an R5C for both stills and video now. So great to not have to use two systems.

Thanks for the comparison! For the longest time I was convinced on buying 2 Cameras: RED Komodo for my video work, and R5 for my photography. Alternatively, I'm now using the R5c as my primary hybrid camera and this video proves that this was a good call! Cheers :)

I tested the Komodo vs C70 and ultimately jumped straight at that Canon. That DGO sensor is incredible. The built in NDs have their merits and the ability to rig up or down depending on project was good. I can shoot both Doc and Narrative now feeling pretty comfortable I’ll get what I need if for some reason there isn’t a dedicated soundie.

I mean.. both look great but that komodo has that filmic image to it . If your lookin for that film look hands down that komodo is where it’s at. Hands down there really isn’t much comparison . I’m an fx3 user so for me it’s the same thing . Fx3 is great but doesn’t have that filmic look that the red holds over it.

Hmmm. Yes, you can decode (keyword, decode) the raw files in Clog 2. But you can't record internally in Clog 2, because according to canon, the sensor is not rated that much dynamic range that Clog 2 would provide. So does decoding in Clog 2 make ANY difference whatsoever compared to Clog 3 already in camera?

Get the battery grib, fast!! 😅 and the Canon ND filter tray + the xlr top. The R5C doesent have a DGO sensor (Dual grain output sensor) :) - The c70 and the c300 mark 3 has. It does however have Dual native ISO but thats a different thing.

The 2 biggest complaints that I had when using the R5C were the micro HDMI port and the battery life. Canon could remedy these issues with a C80. Same sensor and codecs, but a bigger body with bigger battery and full sized HDMI.

C80 would be straight cinema though. R1/R1C should remedy these issues. I do feel Canon can fix the battery issue by making a R5C Standalone battery grip that gives a battery block like the R3. Easy fix.

What does using the micro HDMI do to you? Does it make you cry? You do have a secure bracket that Canon gives with the R5C. And battery life? Do you cry also? Every single cine camera uses an external battery supply. Use a battery bank or brick and you can film all day. The R5C internal battery is so bad you have to use and external battery source.

Komodo goes up to 300MBps not 300Mbps... Actually komodo 6k raw is about the same size as r5c 8k raw with it being about 100MBps (800Mbps) minimum and 200MBps (1600Mbps) maximum at uncropped 24fps.

Thanks for the choice of cameras for comparison in terms of image but beyond that these two cameras could not be more different so it seems kind of obvious what the conclusion will be here. It’s like comparing and Alexa with and iPhone??! We all know the difference. I don’t quite understand why SS says that they are similar?!? Literally apart from the rf mount and raw they could not be more different. If the objective is to see if the r5c image could be a useful companion camera that seems obvious. Of course it can, particularly if you are a hybrid shooter then the differences in design can of course be essential not just useful. The practicalities of these cameras will surely always be the issue particularly if pushed into a professional set. The external monitoring, sdi connection v micro hdmi, the camera control and ui, the rigging, put simply cube v dslr???! I get that these days a lot of content is for social media but It would be interesting to know when and how SS would use either. How would he professionally rig up the r5c?? Would he use it on a commercial shoot??! Btw I’m assuming that as with any test SS has a card but the whites aren’t really even close here and I’m not sure why??? I think its noted, but the exposure seems a little off too. Meanwhile I know SS js experienced enough to know this but why not choose an f stop that allows you to be in focus a little easier. We all know about the crazy detail in the 8k image but it would be kind of nice to be able to see how the Komodo stacks up with some post sharpening added. Having more in focus picture would help. Also if SS is using his meike SS then how are the focus assist tools and the practicalities of using the R5c in different scenarios?? Does it need another monitor? Sure great on a gimbal but what else??! I know how much effort it takes to do these videos and it’s always super appreciated but in a camera comparison I guess the ideal is to be able to compare the cameras and not the ability to nail focus so why not make life easy and choose an f stop that is more manageable??! Great that this video has been uploaded in reasonably hi res. Having the raw files would be fantastic. thanks so much again for the post.

I wonder if even 0.00001% of everyone complaining about micro-HDMI has ever had a single issue with it. I can't remember ever connecting a cable to ANYTHING and then having trouble getting it tangled up, or pulling it by mistake. For most users I'd say the cable format is a COMPLETE non-issue. It would be interesting to see a -day-in-the-life of a person having this problem and see what other issues they might encounter tackling a normal day around people and machinery.

@@AndreeMarkefors I've had 3 micro HDMI failures with an a7sii in my years with them. Cables get twisted as you move around and one time I had one break inside the port. I was lucky to be able to remove the remains of the cable from the port. Never had an issue with my full sized HDMI on my a7siii. It's a legitimate criticism for a $4500 camera aimed at professionals. There is no excusing Canon's omission

@@james_slaven Not going to argue with actual experience. Sorry to hear that. Never had issues with cables myself and sometimes feel the micro HDMI thing gets repeated ad nauseam 'just because'. Had Canon fixed my gripe (by basing the R5C off of a pro body like the R3, to make it easier to grip and make buttons marginally bigger, maybe they'd find room for a larger HDMI as well. (R5C owner myself)

Well that's why Canon made a cinema version camera like the C100/200/300 for outputs like SDI/HDMI out. Tilta released a Canon R5C cage that has a bracket mount that "helps" reduce the possible issue of micro HDMI cables being DC'd from the socket, they even give you a Micro HDMI to Full HDMI cable.

Great video! I returned my Canon R5c. The deal breakers for me were the battery life, micro hdmi, no LUT during playback, and lack of autofocus at 4K60 with EF adapted lenses. I use a lot the 24mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4, and currently, Canon doesn't offer those lenses in RF mount. The tiny micro HDMI port is a nightmare. You need so much rigging that I felt like I was back in the old Canon 5dmk2 days. No thanks. The Sony is a much better system.

I would strongly argue dual native iso is also significantly worse than the way the iso works on the red sensor. Dual native essentially means you have 2 points where you can take advantage of the full latitude of the dynamic range.. then you add gain/reduce gain (introducing artefacts) to hit the between stops. (Also reducing the dynamic range) On the red, the sensor works differently,the dynamic range is the same at every iso stop. It’s why with the red you can begin to manipulate the iso to move the dynamic range into the areas you want it to live in, with 0 cost…which is such an incredible tool. Sunny day, wack the iso up high (1600) and pop the nd’s in. You’ve now got a huge tonal range in the bright areas. And the opposite is true for a dark space. You can’t do that with other cameras to the same degree. That and compressed raw are probably the 2 biggest factors that make red even have a chance to stand up to power of the Alexa. Which surprisingly still struggles with having a naitive iso.

@@JonPais arri definitely have a better dynamic range, (& sensor) sorry for the confusion, i just meant that the fact that it can’t have the same dynamic range throughout the iso stops, is a shame, and is something I’m sure Arri would love to have, which is what I meant by struggles. One day I imagine they will find a clever way to address that. I mean, that’s what dual iso is all about with Arri’s new camera. But let me be clear, with the new alexa35, the dynamic range on the weakest iso is still better than all the Red’s.
