This video is a collection of clips out of the Canon R6 when paired with the RF 16mm f2.8 STM lens.
SETTINGS:
Most clips were taken at 1/50, 24 or 30 fps, with ISO ranging from 800 to 1600. Some indoor dimly-lit bar ISO hit 25600, but I cannot remember. All footage was recorded with Standard or Landscape Picture Profile. Nothing was captured in C-LOG and no color grading was applied. Only slight adjustments to contrast in Davinci Resolve for indoor shots where lighting was overly orange/yellow).
AUDIO:
Most clips had the Neewer CM14 Microphone attached with deadcat windscreen. Indoor clips omitted the deadcat windscreen. Some clips had such bad audio, I chose to overlay it with music or voice recorded with my mobile phone.
TRIPODS:
- Manfrotto Compact Action Tripod
- Manfrotto MTPIXIMII-B, PIXI Mini Tripod
- Switchpod for handheld walking shots
CAMERA BAG:
Peak Design 20L Zip

Great review. What Nd filter do you used?

The scenes in the forest pop. I think I’m going to buy that lens and give it a try. I’ll be using a wireless mic setup so the STM motor sound isn’t an issue. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, a wireless mic is a must with this lens. The STM motor sounds drove me nuts

Thanks! I was wondering what Log and Mic you used for your videos?

I did not film with log at all. I used the in-camera Picture Profile which was Standard, or might've been Landscape. I find the in-camera profiles to be very good. I did custom-set my white balance, which was around 6000K or warmer. Again, I can't remember and I don't think that data is saved to the file so I can't validate. The microphone was Neewer CM14 from Amazon (great microphone for only around $20!).

I'm all about "love the gear you have." That being said, I happen to be in the (un)fortunate position (depending upon your perspective) to see neat/cool/quirky/random lenses EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. and, as such, I've been on a vintage (mostly Russian) lens kick lately (I just picked up my fifth today) because they're really inexpensive and they have "character" (which is the nice way of saying they're FLAWED AF). Though it's not as bad as waiting to get your prints back from the lab, with these old lenses, until you get home and look at things on your computer, you really don't know what you're gonna get. To me, that's a lot of the fun of this hobby. Thankfully, my recent "vintage" Gear Acquisition Syndrome has nothing to do with Ooooh, if I get [INSERT NEW ITEM HERE], it will make me a better photographer. It's all about Ooooh, that could be fun.

Agreed! I don't acquire gear to become a better photographer, but because it's fun to use. I approached this video as a way for me to easily take inventory of what I have when I am packing for a trip. Instead of trying to dig through external hard drives, I can watch this video and see what it's capable of and say "sold, you're coming with me to [holiday destination]". The other angle is that I'm sure people are curious what the lens can do, in a non traditional gear video. I'm tired of watching videos about specs - I want sample footage! (But I know editing can skew that.) Anyway, thanks for watching 😁

Very hepfull video. Were you using the camera mic on the woods, or an external one on top? thanks in advance!

I used an external mic on top of the camera for the woods shots. It’s by Neewer from Amazon

@@BadSloucher and the autofocus sound was still this loud? 😩 I just sold my camera and lens 10-18mm F4.5 - 5.6 because it was bad at low light environments, but I’ve never had any issues hearing the autofocus while vlogging with an external mic on top. Now Im really considering if I should get this 16mm 2.8

@@martingallivanting yes, the microphone picked up the autofocus sound a lot. You could remove it in post using Voice Isolation in DaVinci Resolve Studio (paid version). I stopped using this lens for vlogging and used the 24-105 f4L and it does not make any noise when auto focusing, but it is heavy and pricey and not as wide as 16mm, obviously, but no noise

Gear reviewers can learn a thing or two from this! If you’re reviewing lenses or cameras, shoot the whole vid with it. My pet peeve is when they talk about the gear using a completely different lens and camera… like bro we appreciate your knowledge, but can you just show us at the same time or something?
