That's not been my experience, at least with my R7/RF 100-500/1.4x TC. I am sure it slows down to some extent, but it isn't appreciable to my eye. Moreover, I think the bird eye tracking actually finds it easier to "lock on" when the eye is larger in the view finder.

Cool. It's always interesting to here real world experiences. While I'm (mostly) a Nikon shooter, I'm excited about the R7 and hope it lights a fire for Nikon to do a little more with their APS-C stuff for the Z mount.

According to Canon the R7 has weather-sealing equivalent to that of the 90D, which was not to the same level of the flagship DSLR the 7DII. Canon have also advised my that this camera is more an equivalent to the 90D overall, and not the 7DII, which may not be an issue for you or a lot of other viewers - and it DOES represent brilliant value for money, but personally for the work I do - which can be in some pretty hostile environments - I shall wait to see if a higher-end model comes along. I am hoping if that happens, that they will have a stacked sensor, bigger buffer, and dual type 1 CF express cards (compatible with SD cards) to provide a much faster processing path. This would improve recognized issues as regards shutter lag and fast overloaded buffer (with RAW) at 30FPS ES - if one moves to the mechanical shutter, it maxes at 15 FPS, but sounds like a tinker's cart. Finally, a battery grip is a bit of a loss, when one is using heavy telephotos in the field - it helps to bring the CofG back to the body, plus dual controls and of course the extra energy supply. Again, I think that at the price point, I think this represents great value, but not for me - I would be prepared to pay more for such a system.

I'm in a similar situation to you as I often find myself working in pretty unpleasant conditions with big lenses. All the issues you've raised are valid - the R7 is definitely not as robust as some of Canon's other cameras and it comes with a lot of compromises. Unlike you, I decided to go ahead and buy it anyway while I wait for a higher-end mirrorless crop body to come along (I keep a crop body along with a full frame body because it's always nice to have one around for wildlife!). I've managed to find workarounds to many of the problems with the R7 but not all. I put a weather-proof coat on my lens and body at even the slightest hint of rain, and this hopefully gets around the weather sealing shortcomings (got to be careful with coats though - get a good one and constantly check it's on properly). I also bought a 500g counterweight which screws into the mounting hole in the bottom of the camera and balances the rig very nicely on a gimbal with a 600mm f4L prime, so that gets me part way around the lack of a grip. The buffer is more of a challenge, but I find that feathering the shutter and releasing short, regular bursts keeps me going through most action scenes at 30fps. Obviously I'll miss some keepers but at least I'm not buffering out all the time - it's a compromise. Mechanical shutter is simply too loud on the R7 for any sensitive environment though - it's like a AK47, and the only solution to that is going electronic. My biggest gripe with the R7 is rolling shutter - it's definitely a poor performer in that regard. I don't mind a bit of background distortion or even a little bit on the subject (most people viewing a single frame wouldn't know it's there - it's only by viewing the sequence that you can see the distortion). But I've had fast-action frames of small birds where their wings are almost twisted around their body by rolling shutter and that is definitely a problem! All-in-all though - the R7 is a great little performer and let's face it - a camera at that price point is going to have some limitations. When a higher-end crop camera comes along, I'll switch (provided it has a stacked sensor and a bigger buffer). But for now the R7 is handy to have around and a lot of its failings can be worked around... Cheers

@@mikebrownhill4662 Thanks for your response. It's great to see that I am not alone in this. For the time being I shall stick with my R5 and R6 units. They do what I need - I can crop the R5 down if necessary. Certainly, the R7 is a great deal for its price, I just am concerned that the opportunity has gone with the R7 brand slot now used. Perhaps the R2, which I believe has been unused, will be a spot for the APS-C camera of my dreams! {:-)

I kinda stumbled across your tictoc ans I'm looking for a new camera to take pics of my kid playing soccer... would this camera be good for that? And the lense.

Great, thanks for taking the time to look me up! The R7 is incredible for outdoor sports (standout features include a fast burst rate and tracking autofocus with human subject detection), and it has one of the best supplied lenses for medium-telephoto field sports (will give you medium-wide shots when the players are on your side of the field); it also offers an EXTENSIVE selection of upgrade lens options and can utilize professional lenses you might upgrade to better than most cropped-sensor camera bodies. I really though about selling my EOS RP and getting R10, R7 if affordable enough. Luckily... since i wanted mainly more reach - the cheaper (and overall better...) option was just to get a "big" lens, the RF 800 F11 instead. Im barely happy with the RPs ISO handling (usable and nice up to 6400, "just ok" at 12800 and "not really ok" at 25600), let alone the "crappy" high ISO handling of R10/R7....

I love my RP but the eye detection on the R7 is a real game changer, just like the 30/15 fps. But I am happy I was able to keep my RP as ff camera.
