I gave up with that rumour site years ago waiting for the 7DMK3 that never happened. I did get the R7 it's good but yes rolling shutter is the bad you detail it perfectly. It will do for the moment still get nice images and works well with my nice old lenses. I'm also hoping on a Nikon stacked apsc and it would likely be a more feature filled camera than a Canon based on the past (7DMK2 vs D500). So faced with a choice I think Nikon may still get my money this time whether it's apsc or FF because the Z8 is looking too tempting.

OMG Phil ! Truer words have never been spoken ! LOVE my two R7's as well, but they definitely need some improvements, and a stacked sensor might be freaking fantastic ! But at the very least, if they just sped up the readout speed a lot. Like as fast, or a bit faster than the R5. Considering that camera is 3 yrs old, this doesn't sound like an unreasonable request to me. If they dropped the mp's by any at all though, I'd be completely bummed. I sometimes need to crop a lot. Even using a 1280mm equivalent combo.

Phil, your thoughts are very interesting. I’m still not sure if 24 MP would be enough for me, however if it were done I would consider a R7 II. Canon could keep the body the same, but adding the ability to purchase a battery grip would definitely win my support. I enjoy you and Heather’s videos. Hi Phil, indeed giving the R7ii a faster sensor with less rolling shutter and more consistent AF is a must for a next R7. Giving it a stacked sensor sounds like the ideal solution to achieve this this. The OM-1 actually has about the same pixel density as the R7, so I would hope the resolution would not decrease much below the current one. And I'd also hope the R7ii gets a CFxB card. But I don't expect such dream R7ii to be already released before the end of the year. When the R7ii does come like this, I may well decide (in a few years) to get the R7ii for birding and keep my R5 for landscapes instead of swapping the R5 for the R5ii ..

@@PhilThach heheh, but my friend from Tennessee (who's getting married in about half a year) told me a few days ago the 200-800 doesn't resolve well on the high pixel density of the R7 🤔 so he's putting some shade on such plan ;-) Maybe you can invite him on a live, and then I'll wait and see who wins the discussion 😛

It would be GREAT if Canon makes the R7ii the R7 bird shooters were hoping for from the beginning. Faster sensor and processor. Blackout-free, faster EVF. (A higher res EVF would be nice, too.) Bigger buffer. Those would likely fix all that ails the R7. We certainly don't need MORE resolution -- because we don't want more noise. We can dream. (But I suspect Canon has other projects in mind.)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Phil. I got into bird photography and acquired an R7 when it first came out. I've enjoyed the camera ever since, but have bumped into the R7 issues that you mentioned. Meanwhile, I have been anxiously awaiting the R5 Mk II. Now, with this new R7 Mk II rumor, I have something else to consider. However, as with all Canon rumors, I try mightily to temper my expectations. I would probably bite at a newer version of the R7 if it has the improvements you mentioned, even at $2500. But, I also see myself succumbing to the allure of a full frame Canon camera in the future. Can you direct me to the nearest poor house?

I understand the need for improvements on the R7, but I wouldn't give Canon carte-blanche on the price tag. I've enjoyed the R7 and use it probably more than my R-5 because of the reach with the 100-500 lens. It has always given me great photos and was much more affordable than my R-5. Also, a bit bummed about the R-5 never getting any upgrades just the promise of a newer version at a higher price. The R-5 owners have gotten a raw deal in my opinion.

I'm a Nikon shooter but I agree with you on the R7 II. There's a few drawbacks to mirrorless cameras compared to a DSLR. A DSLR has an optical viewfinder so there's no screen blackout in burst mode. Rolling shutter isn't an issue. The focus tracking was better until recently when mirrorless finally caught up. Until the single sensors are fast enough, I think they should put stacked sensors in their pro and semi pro bodies. We're hoping for a d500 replacement on the Nikon side. People were wanting a z90 like the z9 but I think it will more than likely be a z80 like the z8. I think it will have 33 mp with a stacked sensor. I have a z6 II and I love it. I recently bought a z8 and it is an amazing camera. Especially after this latest forbear update. Competition drives innovation so we all need each brand to push the envelope on technology. Every brand keeps raising the bar and we benefit from that. Focus tracking, no rolling shutter, no screen blackout are all big things for me. I'm a hobbyist but I do occasionally do things for the public to help pay for some of my gear. If I was a working photographer I would only buy what I needed but as a hobbyist I buy what I want. I have a good job, I'm single and my kids are grown. My money is my money. If I was still shooting Canon I would want a stacked sensor in the next R7. I'm pretty sure if they don't and Nikon comes out with one that does it will cause some people to be upset with Canon. I know I'd be upset.
@PhilThach9 ай бұрын
I agree with all of this except the part about no blackout with a DSLR. Every shot has blackout as the mirror that guides light to the OVF moves out of the way and allows the sensor to make a shot.
@carlmcneill11399 ай бұрын
@PhilThach true but it's brief. It's more like a flicker. You don't have complete blackout. That was one of many reasons for me to buy the z8.

The rolling shutter is only an issue if you use the electronic shutter. I decided to use the electronic first curtain option to eliminate that problem and reduce the fps to about 8 fps. That maximises the number of keepers. However it’s not much of an improvement over the 90d come to think of it.
@Chris_Wolfgram9 ай бұрын
But slapping so hard it might knock the camera out of your hands... Or so loud it might wake the neighbors, is only a problem with the mechanical shutter 😀 lol Of Course I'm being a little facetious, and you can see my response above that I love this camera so much, I bought two of them > and sold my R5 ! I'm afraid the official "stacked sensor" status doesn't mean much anymore ... My old Sony A9 with a first gen stacked sensor blows both more modern "stacked" OM-1 and X-H2s out of the water ... The tracking of both cameras is so poor that it doesn't even come close to the A9 . Chances are the upcoming R7 II will have the same "alleged stacked sensor". I'll stick with my R7 for now which is awesome for still birds , which is 90% of the birds I often shoot. Great video Phil, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

R7II ideally - R3 body (integrated grip), same EVF and rear LCD screen (no top LCD screen). 24mp stacked sensor. Singular CFExpress type B slot. 24mp APS-C BSI stacked sensor. Same battery as the R3. Ideally, debut QPAF would be awesome, but unlikely. 2899 USD. Expensive, but it'd be a pro level APS-C camera from Canon, perfect for wildlife and birding photographers, which is its market. I know some wouldn't like the R3 integrated body shell, but it would help keep costs down by re-using parts. Same button UI layout as the R3, sans top LCD screen. The current R7 button UI layout is a WEAK spot for the camera and really makes it harder to use than it should be in the field imho. I don't own a R7, but I did have a good play with 1 in store. I do own a R3. And it does everything right, except only being 24mp FF. 35mp would have been a better option for Canon.

The rolling shutter and warping isn’t the biggest deal to me, but it is certainly noticeable in specific shots (though not all), so it’d be cool if we got this resolved. I’d also personally want to see a faster autofocus system, something on par with the R6 Mark II or more directly derivative of the R3. I would take these improvements over megapixels any day, as the 1.6x crop is enough for wildlife for me. I’d gladly take 24 megapixels or less just to have a faster sensor and readout speed.

THAT camera would probably tempt me away from my current MFT system if there were improvements to the AF and the shutter-shock and noise of the R7's current shutter was eliminated. Just a thought but it would take this to move me away from MFT.

If Canon can improve the readout speed to be comparable to or a better than the non-stacked R5/R6 (perhaps courtesy of a new DIGIC XI processor) while keeping or increasing sensor resolution, that would be an acceptable alternative to a 24MP stacked R7II with a substantially increased price tag, IMO.

Canon makes their own sensors stacked and otherwise so it's in their best interest to make Tons of them to bring down the cost of production. So bringing a stacked sensor to their cropped bodies makes perfect sense. Also, the fact that Canon has the FF 200 800 while Sony and Nikon don't have that, well that's just more in favor in Canon. I heard this rumour recently, and am also quite exited about the prospect of an R7 Mark II. I think that Canon should look to make changes to bring this APS-C camera into line with cameras like the Fuji X-HS2 (a very good APS-C camera). The EVF should be increased to be inline with other Canon models, so would expect this should be at least 3.68M dot, obviously a stacked sensor for all the reasons you stated, along with 1 x CF Express + 1 x UHS II SD card slots. This would put the R7 right up there with the best of them. As for the price, its going to be more expensive to make these changes, but if Canon do decide to go ahead with something along these lines, I'll be the first in the queue in the camera store. 🤞.................. Oh yes and forgot to mention, a battery grip as an add on accessory would be nice, (never understood why Canon didn't do one for the R7 ???????).

EVF and LCD are average. The OM-1 outperforms it in every way. 32mp APS-C is also overkill, being equivalent to 82mp FF. I mean, people are saying 60mp FF is too much! A 24mp APS-C stacked sensor would be perfect. Faster readout speed, plenty of resolution, easier to manufacturer too. If Nikon introduces a stacked APS-C before Canon, I suspect that they'll gain a fair whack of market share, especially for Canon users who only have a singular Canon lens. As to Canon Rumours, the site is typically full of shit imho. Hasn't been reliable in years. Designed for clickbait ad revenue.
