For Canon, get the Visioncolor custom color profile and you won't have to grade much, it desaturates just enough to uncrush the blacks. Saves so much time and looks great.

In all honesty: The R7 and R10 only came out this summer. Of course there aren't too many APS-C RF-S lenses out yet. What do you expect ? But there is a ton of perfectly good working EF-S lenses out there and the bonus is, in camera VND, if you use the filter adapter.

I don't see any problem using full frame RF lens on R7/R10. The RF16mm on R7 is still usable for vlog. All the silver ring primes/cheap RF lens fits R7/R10. (16>25, 24>28, 35>56, 85>136, 100-400>160-640) And why people always look down on adapting EF lens, not all EF lenses are heavy. There's pancake lenses in late EF era, put them with the speedbooster on R7/R10 and you can a decent pair. It's not expensive.

Great job on the tests and analysis. I assumed they would be relatively similar, but the Canon did a bit better than expected! That 30mbps encoding option on the Sony sounds appealing. It's a challenge saving projects these days so I often use 8-bit 4:2:0 h.265 hevc on an Atomos Ninja V when indoors because I don't need to adjust much in post. I'm actually using two Canon M6ii cameras right now for my videos, but if I can ever afford it I'm leaning towards a full FX30 dual body kit. That might change if Canon opens up their mount to 3rd party lens makers like Sigma and Tamron.

There are some great, fast, small, and inexpensive lenses for the Sony, and thats just not as true with the Canon, not to mention their whole thing with banning 3rd party lenses for rf

The R7 and R10 came out this summer. There were no Canon APS-C mirrorless bodies up until that point. Of course it takes a little while, until those surface. In the meanwhile, you could have used inexpensive EF-S lenses with the adapter.

I feel like you under sold the Sony stabilization in the beginning. I own the FX30, and it has standard stabilization and active stabilization. The active stab, although with a crop, works really well for handheld shooting in my experience. Sony is not know for their stabilization, but they did a good job with the FX30's active stab IMO.

Contrary to your belief, if Bresson was alive today, I believe he would choose Canon or Sony because they both let him focus on the real important stuff, the decisive moments, less time fiddling with camera settings. @McSnapples all the pro products you mentioned are adding more and more auto functions into their newest offering than the last generation. Those niche brands don't have the technology Canon and Sony have otherwise they would add AF tracking without blinking an eye. Fujifilm included. Gfx 100s keep improving their af capabilities firmware after firmware, now it is about 3 generations behind Sony FF in AF. Leica is no longer competing in the professional world anymore, a high end pricetag doesn't mean they are in the hands of top photographers, they are more on the shelf of dentists, lawyers, politicians' home. Even Leica SL series have had major AF improvement over the years.

For its price it shouldn't be this good, It's surpassed my expectations, but then again I haven't upgraded my camera since 2015. Also acquired a Lumix S5, and have to say, the dynamic range and stabilisation is truly awesome on that. Camera manufacturers have picked up their game in the past 2 years =)

I think I'd probably get the FX30. In fact, I've been thinking a lot about it since I currently shoot a Lumix S5 and it's leaving my wanting more. The third party lens option just isn't really there for Panasonic, and I kind of want the ability to go out and buy something like a Viltrox 33mm f1.4 or something to test some different focal lengths. I have a few EF lenses for Canon and I could get an adapter for the R7, but I think the FX30 would be more useful too. Especially with the autofocus.

For Panasonic you have sigma 16-23-30-56mm f1.4 for L-mount Lumix S5 is a full frame camera but you can choose to use it like an apsc camera. It’s cheaper than the fx30 + better dynamic range + more cinema features + AF in apsc mode is good

FX30 IBIS + lens stab is totally sufficient for hand held vlogging. What was shown in the video was IBIS only. For everything else you have Catalyst Browse for GoPro level of stab. Perfectly good trade off for not having IBIS wobble if you ask me (or any vlogger).

The lines are blurring. Great comparison, but as someone who has invested in sony crop last 3 years, I think the canon had the edge in a lot of scenarios. Its annoying as outside of in the studio, lack of stabilisation means I seldom take video out and about on my Sony which sucks. The ibis on the r7 looks real good. Speed boosters won’t affect the depth of field but will give you more light. CVP done a great video on it. Also Meike have a great drop in rf adapter. Neat video!

Speedboosters does affect your fov - a 35 mm ff on an apsc would give a 52mm equiv fov , the 35 on a speedbooster would give you a 35mm equiv ( or close to it )

In regard to the number of lenses, I think it's a bit of a myth at this point that Canon has more lenses than Sony. I was an early adopter for mirrorless (coming to Sony from Canon), and I still remember the old days when there were gaps everywhere in the lineup (I remember being on a waiting list for the Zeiss 85mm back in the day so that I wouldn't have to adapt my Canon 85mm all the time). Even for me, I still remember that feeling of there not being a lot of lenses out there. But the times have changed. A quick query on B&H shows 222 new EF/EF-S lenses listed vs. 364 E/FE lenses. While I would agree Canon has released more EF lenses over time, that number is mostly padded by old versions of lenses, and doesn't necessary reflect what's available today. Plus Sony's embrace of third-party lenses has really filled out the roster, especially at the more reasonable price points. Also, a couple misses on the adapted lenses. While Canon does have the advantage with their RF-EF adapter (which should outperform any third-party, especially if shooting action), Sony was the original mirrorless platform that everyone adapted to, so there is a huge library of adapters out there for everything under the sun. Which is why it was also confusing bringing up the Speedbooster in the comparison section since the E-EF version was where Metabones first started. And, for transparency, I have an FX30. But I would have bought it regardlessly since I'm very deep in the system 😅 (Though I do miss Canon's color science...)

I realize this is going to sound very juvenile.... but here goes! I had a sony zv1 for vlogging and basic family photos... then 1 morning the lens decided to screw up and move itself in and out without anyway to get into the menu to try and reset it. So I sent it in for a $400 repair and decided 2 things. ONE. buy a new camera that has a removeable lens so this wont happen again. and TWO (this is the juvenile part) Buy a Canon! I was mad at Sony and their service which is basically non existent at my local camera shop. So after watching many reviews, Including yours. I opted for an R7 with an EF 10-18 mm lens because of the crop and an EF adapter with the removable ND/clear filter. I also added a EF 35mm for family photos and macro and a Tamron 18-200 mm Telephoto for outdoor shooting. So thanks for the great videos...always a hoot. Now I just need to learn how to fly my Mavic Air 2 with the confidence you fly your drone and I'll be just like you.. LOL Take care and keep up the great work!

I just bought a canon r50 and i can say that this camera is really handy and easy to use. And those colors omg... the colors are absolutely stunning in canon. I belive that r7 is much better, you know, 10 bit log, ibis etc. I tried some fujifilm and sony cameras... they can shot beautifuly but those menus... idk they look like chaotic, i mean I don't like the softwere.

I've had most of the Sony mirrorless cameras and currently own a pair of FX30s, so my opinions are not without bias. That said, I've owned Canon and Fuji cameras as well, so I'm not a total Sony fanboi. The "cine" camera designation on the FX30 makes a differece for workflow; dual XLR inputs, the ability to jam timecode, DCI 4K, 1204K all-intra, S-Cinetone to match with my FX6, and possibly the most important thing for professional work, no overheating. As a final bonus, 16-bit RAW output via HDMI. The R7 has vibrant colors out of camera, but they're oversaturdated, and while it's not nearly as bad an overheater as earlier Canon or Sony cameras, it will still shut off when you ask too much of it. Ever since the A7Siii/A9's (and maybe A7Rv?) and their revised color science, I think Sony's colors have been totally on point. The 8-bit cameras were prone to banding and some weird green/yellow shifts, but those things are now fixed. For the money, I don't think there's a better camera on the market.

The 3rd gen a6/a7 bodies partly fixed the colors , but the 4th gen is where its fully fixed

I would go with the FX30 just because its more center focus on video than photography. R7 can do both media but its body was designed to be a photo-first camera before video. Having that fan, red tally lights and button layout for filming really helps a lot. As much as these new cameras can dissipate heat better now, i still prefer to have a fan to help cool the camera better because you never know when you're going to be in 90+ degree weather.

was in Morocco this summer with temperatures going way above 100 degrees.... didn't really notice a dfference when using my X-H1 compared to in colder climates.... the batteries drain faster but the camera didn't overheat any quicker

@@LoFiAxolotl It's always better to have a fan rather than rely on a heat sink or mother nature alone. No matter how good a camera's body dissipate heat, it does have its limitations on how much it can release before being overload. Canon R5 is a good example of this. Colder Climates will help cameras cool down better as I was able to record with my Sony a7IV for 2 hours without any temp warning signs coming on. This is in Minnesota during last winter when the temp was at 7 degrees Fahrenheit. My question to you is, how long did you leave the camera on for recording? If you only record 5 minutes here and there, then it's not going to overheat. For me, I record at least 40 minutes of footage every hour with likely a 2-3 minute break between each recording. This is where your camera gets tested and when its a paid client gig, you will want your camera to be able to handle those long recordings without overheating.

ADHD question for Gene. Do you think you're "Body Doubling" in all your videos? Basically using having another person with you to motivate you and keep you on track. Recently heard about it and realised I often get more work done when my wife's just on the couch nearby. Do you think this is something you're consciously or unconsciously doing?

Hmmm. Interesting point. I bring on other people primarily to get different perspectives and opinions to make the videos more balanced. But also, what you said makes sense because I enjoy filming a lot more when I have others there, and it definitely keeps me on track.

The best camera under 2k is the ZCAM E2M4. 4k 160p prores 422 internal, low light performance. At 51200 iso, you get pretty clean images. Just ettr.

Very interesting! I’ve used Sony NEX/ a cameras since 2012 and I like them but just hate the colors and overall darker look in mixed light/ natural lights. The FX30 looks awesome in reviews but this was the first time I really saw a comparison to a Canon camera and again I like the Canon color and ease of use. However here in Norway both the FX30 and R7 are ca 2200$ body-only but the Canon RP with kit lens costs only ca 1200$ and I wonder if crop sensor is worth it… compared to the RP with kit lens (latest firmware) and some small Samyang lenses that are smaller than some crop lenses. I think for the money I rather go fullframe in HD over crop and 4K. For social media that’s still fine.
