As a photographer, I got the Canon EOS R8 because I've owned and used my Canon EOS 5D Mark III for 8 years now and given they discontinued DSLR production and have all the EF lenses I need, this was the perfect upgrade. It was a no brainer. I made the jump because although I have a SONY FDR AX100E if I wanted to shoot 4K, it meant that if I was out doing photography, it was cumbersome switching between the two and due to that I more often than not didn't bother. Now with 4K built in I can simply switch between the two, and if I wish to shoot professional video, I would use a tripod or would invest in a gimbal. I can't think of any reason, however for requiring shooting near 1/4000th of a second, unless it was on holiday, a bright sunny day, seldom would I ever. Wildlife shooting I've done in the past has largely been using a shutter speed between 1/1000th to 1/2000th. If there's anything that really stands out, however, going from 5D Mark III to this EOS R8, it's the autofocus, it's insane, and as someone pushing into pet photography with a bit of experience what that's like with a pet running towards you, this is a big step up for me. My experience testing the low light is mind-blowing, if I tried pushing my DSLR 5D Mark III to 6,400 especially at night, oh, the grain noise is very noticeable, whereas on the EOS R8 I've tested it even above that and it handles low light very well. Amazed by the quality for the price, which is reasonable given that it has all the same features as the R6 Mark II but without certain things which isn't really a deal breaker. The battery life is pretty decent and no big deal changing over SD card if need be, which I highly doubt I would need to with a 128gb card.
@richd3174 Жыл бұрын
Do all your EF lenses have IS? if not then lack of IBIS is a deal breaker. As an RP owner I can tell you that the R8 battery sucks big time, another deal breaker. The R8 sensor is exposed when changing lenses which makes it prone gathering dust on the sensor, the mechanical shutter on the R6 mitigates this.
@Libertarianach_na_h-Alba Жыл бұрын
@@richd3174 That depends, if you're talking about for video walking about, I wouldn't do that, if I want to take professional 4K video footage, I would take short clips with the camera on a tripod, and that's why it wasn't a problem for me. My goal as a photographer is to produce the best work I can, if I wanted moving footage I would use a gimbal. However, the main reason I got this is for photography and given that the autofocus is brilliant, it's a great camera to compliment my 5D Mark III. From a photography perspective, it depends how much you're using the camera in one day. Having studied photography and graduated through college, I typically know what I would shoot before hand, so I wouldn't overuse the camera. If doing something wildlife or pet photography, again, I wouldn't keep the camera on at all times. To put it into perspective, I didn't charge the battery for the next day, went out and did a pet shoot and the battery lasted me without having to reach for my second battery, plus I have another 2 batteries, so 4 in total. If it were that much of a crisis, I have my 5D Mark III and the spare batteries, so it's not a problem for me. Whilst I understand your point about a minor issue regarding dust, places like Calumet did sensor cleaning free of charge on specific days and one will be fine so long as they're quick at changing a lens over, and ensuring the camera is switched off. The worst thing a person could do is to change the lens when the camera body is switched on, as that is what will really attract dust. This was the same story for my 5D Mark III and that is a professional body camera. Given that I'm knowledgeable and experienced enough, the only people I know who would use up a battery like that are video content creators. If you're a photographer and chewing the battery, you're either doing a long shoot regarding sports photography, or something of similar nature. Add to that, batteries do have a lifespan as well, which is why spares are important for me. And honestly, the R6 Mark II was considerably more expensive and the things you've stated here really are not that big of a deal. I can say that and I am a photographer, not a hobbyist, which is why when I saw this camera at £1500 I was shocked, taken aback, somewhat laughing, and in disbelief by some of the other reviews I saw on it because the following is not an issue: • battery can easily be switched over, and really doesn't take that much effort to do, even with my camera on the tripod I can do it. • switching over SD card is the same and even with the 5D Mark III, I honestly cannot think of a time I've gone through a full SD card even after doing shoots for a day, and for me, I empty the card onto my drive after each day, so the dual card slot is not the end of the world, and bearing in mind, that's a pretty good price for what it's worth and capabilities. Even if someone was to say it is 24 megapixels, my 5D Mark III is a 20 megapixel camera and I've had A1 size prints done, especially when I did my graded unit at college before I graduated and honestly, blown up at A1, you wouldn't notice a difference unless you looked very close and compared 2 to get overly fussed about it, and that's A1. Even then, I now have Topaz Labs Gigapixel. So all in all, I really cannot see much of a fault for this camera, it's more than enough for a professional. It'll see me through my pet and landscape photography easily. The only downside for videographers is obviously going to be the overheating and time limit it'll switch off if they're doing an interview type thing, but I didn't get this for 4K video for that, I got it for the style of video you see a serious of stills from clip, to clip, to clip. So it all depends on who is after it.
@Libertarianach_na_h-Alba Жыл бұрын
@@richd3174, oh and I forgot to add, sure, but doing photography, I saw someone saying that without image stabilisation the lowest they could go was like 200/s, my lenses are large image stabilisation, but for arguments sake, if I was out shooting people with random street photography on holiday at night, the higher ISO is insanely good on this camera compared with my 5D Mark III. And how often would I seriously drop my shutter speed below 125th/s, perhaps indoors photographing people? But that doesn't fuss me, I use my bounce flash, or like I mentioned I'd use higher ISO. The only time I'm not using flash is some circumstances in pet photography or landscape, that's it. If using flash photography, you've nothing to worry about in that respect. Seriously, it really is such minor things that when I saw the price of this camera, and given that I wanted a second camera for my professional work, I was gob smacked, it's actually insane they're selling this at this price for a new camera and photography is what it's primarily for.

At 3:31 R6 looks better to my eye. I realised after I released my video on why I really like the R8, that it’s biggest shortcoming for video is the low bitrate of the IPB compression compared to the R6 MKII. Will most people notice it with KZbin compression? Probably not, but it stands out in your shots shooting into the sun. The R6 looks much better in both the highlights and the shadows and the R5 (which I own) would be another step up again. Though, I still think the R8 would be great for very well lit scenarios as a longer form interview B cam. Edit: I am actually wrong about the difference in the codecs. The compression bitrates in Canon Log 3 video are the exact same for the R8 and The R6 MK II so James you are absolutely right, there should be no difference in the video quality. Not sure why the R8 highlights look slightly more blown out at 3:31- perhaps exposure shifted slightly and clipped the highlights in the R8 clip compared to the R6 MK II.

Thank you for watching Michael! It was a pretty cloudy day so I think the sun was just slightly less diffused and more direct on the R8 clip as the sun was in and out of the clouds all day. Good to hear there's no difference in bit rates. Gonna go over and check out your video now!

Nice video, but I'd add: Consider the lenses you'll be using most and type of photography you'll be doing before making this choice. I do 2 things primarily: portraits (individual and group) and wildlife (mostly birds). I bought an R8 and used it for the past 6-8 months fairly casually as an enthusiast (and previously pro-photographer). I found it exceptional for wildlife and portraits, mainly due to the fast focus and easy menu system. The focus options are a bit overly complicated to me. But I've gotten the hang of it. (I think) I used a 24-105/f4 for portraits and general street and a 600/f11 for wildlife. I added a 100-400 too. All handle well on the R8. I don't use video and ibis wasn't important to me. However, I bought a 28-70/f2 and that lens really made the R8 body small-feeling. I already have large-ish hands and that made it to where I was primarily holding the lens to shoot. My fingers really dug into the R8 to stabilize it. I ran out of room to hold it. It's interesting that the way the way weight is distributed in my hand makes the R6/lens combo feel lighter than the R8! It's definitely more controlled and I feel less like I'm going to drop it. I was also tired of constantly running out of battery w/ the R8. I'm not a great planner and not a full-time photographer.. so always remember to charge was a problem. I had 3 batteries and it was 'just enough'. I always seemed to have 2 dead ones. It seemed to drop quickly after being full. I thought about a grip but Canon doesn't make a battery-extender for the R8. I'd have to use Vello and deal with its idiosyncrasies. Your experience of shooting for 2 hours and only losing 1 bar is interesting. If I did that, turned off the camera, then turned it back on later in the day, I'd be at 1 bar somehow. I could shoot maybe 30 more minutes to an hour before I'd have to replace it with a charged one. I also plan to buy the 200-800 for wildlife and again, the R8 is just too small for it. The 600/f11 was fine, though. I think the 800/f11 would be fine too, but not as comfortable/secure as the R6. Also to note is the way the R6 sounds and feels when taking a photo. It is a re-assuring, perfectly timed sounding shutter release. It clicks exactly when I think it would. The 'break-over' point is better on the R6. The R8 feels a little mushier or more nebulous to me. The sound isn't as crisp. The moment I shoot and say "I got it" matches the image for me on the R6. I know the shutter type has to do with that, and maybe everyone else knows this is the case, but it's new to me, and the experience of shooting with the R6 is simply more accurate and precise than the R8... and I don't see many talk about it. So, those are the big differences I notice as someone re-entering the pro photography scene after a very long hiatus. Hope it helps someone. Thanks for your review...

You have the best camera reviews on KZbin imho (and I've seen most of them). Instead of just shooting charts, you use your cameras in the real world and that's what counts (especially when it comes to real world dynamic range vs charts or "tests"). Also, I like that you actually compared the sensor output as well as most just say "they have the same sensor so they have the same image quality". I remember hearing that when the EOS-R was released as most said it had the same sensor as the 5D Mark IV, but as somebody who owned both, the image quality was very different (the EOS-R had less dynamic range, more noise and also banding that wasn't on the 5D Mark IV). The IBIS wobble is a bit concerning for video at wide angles. I just got the Sigma 14-24 2.8 for my R6 Mark II and wonder if I'd just be better off turning off IBIS completely and doing stabilization in post? Also, your model is absolutely fantastic.
@JamesReader Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much as always DRIS, your comments are always super encouraging. I had the same thoughts regarding sensor, I had heard similar things regarding the EOS R so it's good to see that there really is no image quality penalty here. In regards to the IBIS wobble, if you're shooting wider than 20mm and the shot has lots of movement I would consider turning off all stabilisation. In Davinci Resolve I only add the lightest of stabilisation in post and I think the results are good. Gimbal is always best but of course not always possible. Thank you for the kind words about Rachel too!

The R8 has been on my radar for some time now since its release. I shoot primarily with the original R and R6 and have had no gripes regarding these two, except the overheating in the R6 for long periods of video coverage… I noticed that you mentioned the R8 does have an indicator regarding this issue, which is helpful, but still suffers from the overheating nonetheless. If I were to shoot a wedding with it, for video, would it be sufficient enough without overheating? I have used the original R numerous times for hybrid coverage at weddings and it remains FLAWLESS despite its age and lack of certain features. In fact, I shot a 10 hour wedding video using only the R and I actually ran out of battery life and memory storage before anything else. There was no glitches, or issues, indefinitely! So, really, I might not ever sell it, but as for the original R6, I have considered selling it and replacing it with the R8, or its successor, the R6 MkII, but the price tag is a bit steep, however. The thing that actually makes me gravitate towards the R8 is actually the simplicity, going back to the nostalgia of the RP, which I have owned at a point in time, but have sold due to its lack of features that I required-C-Log, video frame rates, and DPAF in 4k to name a few. The R has those features and more!! So, I bought that and sold the RP. However, I miss the minimal design of it and size. Furthermore, the some of the most intriguing things about the R8 is the fact that it shoots 4k 60fps (NTSC) downsampled from 6k without crop, and can shoot up to 40fps in photo using the fully Electronic mode, with a shutter speed of up to 1/16000!! 😮 It truly does make for an epic experience overall!! Also, the EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) is flawless compared to the IBIS in Canon’s other models-due to the artifact wobble-and that just goes to show that the EIS that once was, has either been refined or has been slept on by many due to the demand of IBIS… just goes to show, what once was old is new again 😏 I think my only gripes I have of the R8 is the battery life being as it is the LP-E17 with a 1040mAh power output. But to get around this issue, just carry more batteries 😅 And being as the batteries are about a third of the price of the larger LP-E6NH batteries, it’s worth the investment. One thing I am still uncertain of though, is its weather sealing… no one really talks about it. Am I able to shoot in the rain like I can either one of my other cameras, or is it null and void? 🤔
@JamesReader Жыл бұрын
I've had really good experiences with the R8 shooting long days of video with no overheating. That is in the British climate though so it's not stress tested too often. It certainly seems better than the R6 where overheating always seemed unavoidable. In terms of weather sealing, again, can only talk from personal experience but I have been brave enough (or unwise enough) to use it in the rain even with the none weather sealed primes and not had any issues. Certainly would avoid really heavy rain but it seems to keep out light rain.

Hi James. Will the lack of IBIS on the R8 significantly affect camera shake and picture clarity with the RF L lenses for portraiture ? Do you think a 3rd party battery grip or RP grip extender Will neutralize this situation ?Thanks. Beautiful Images; thoughtful reviews as always .😊

Thank you! No I don’t think you’ll have any issues with camera shake, shutter shock seems quite well controlled on the R8. If you are concerned then I would suggest EFC shutter for any shutter speed under 1/1000 just to be sure, and fully mechanical above that.

I have this combo and it’s a great combo. I tested shutter speed at 60-100 and still sharp…did not tested at lower speed. Ut as it opens at 1.8, you can easily set the shutter speed to 150-250 in most situations, even rather dark, without exceeding 6400iso at 150-250

I've found the 1.8 primes are great on the R8, the 24mm, 35mm and 50mm 1.8. I still adapt EF lenses too, the Sigma 24-70 is reasonably priced and stabilised so a good option for the R8. The Sony certainly has more budget primes and zooms. The mirrorless Sigma lenses are great on E mount.

Anyone shot landscape at night with stars(no moonlight) and how do they find their ability to frame/compose.(with either of these two cameras)? I recently got the R50, which for my use I really liked - except for the aforementioned type of shots at night. I shoot in manual pre selecting my aperature, shutter and ISO . The R50 for focusing is no problem either as I use the viewfinder scale and set to infinity which is what I want for these types of shots. However, the big downside is that I can't frame/compose my shots - there's not enough ambient light to 'activate' the viewfinder/view panel. It's too noisey can't make out anything. To get a shot I would have to do a series of shots and guess how much to move the camera on the tripod each time to get the framed shot I wanted. I decided to pass on the R50 to someone else I know who can use it for their purposes while I research another camera. I would like to stay with Canon, but if I can't even get a faint image outline in the viewfinder I think I may have to move on to another 'brand'. I heard and have seen videos on Sonys Bright Monitoring feature which lets you frame your shot first time on dark night time scenes. With the older DSLR and SLR film cameras, there was always enough ambient light that I could always compose my image on the first shot with the optical viewfinder.

I notice the same about Canon JPEGs but I also notice slight blurriness. And low quality noise reduction that removes so much detail. Fuji is the worst though. Messy and muddy. Not sharp at all. Sony and Panasonic are the best. Then Nikon. Color would be another category to rate though.
