I expect to stick with Sony for the foreseeable future (I'd have to take a big loss to sell all my lenses and accessories and rebuy from a new manufacturer). I currently use an A7IV as my primary camera, mostly for photography. I get up to 10fps with mechanical shutter. Someday I'd like to have a stacked sensor body with higher speed burst shooting and minimal rolling shutter effect in video. That might mean picking up a used A1 or waiting to see what a future A9 markIII can do

What I do is use hi without a plus which is 20fps electronic shutter. Your buffer doubles and you get around 150 shots in compressed raw or joeg. 20fps is very fast it is what r5 can do with a fresh battery. I do use 40fps mode sometimes but I highly recommend using 20fps which is plenty fast for many things and no buffer issues

Hi Simon, I’ve been taking photographing birds for a few years. I want to upgrade my m50(used with a sigma 100-400mm). I tried using a fujifilm xs20 ( which we had at home) with the same sigma lense and an adaptor. It’s just to heavy for me to carry around . I am doubting about the canon r7 or r8 with the 400mm. I am leaning towards the r7 but I am doubting about low light performance and noise as well as the background. What do you think? Must I accept to drag a 600mm to get good shots with an r7 or r8? Should i get a more expensive body/ lense? Wait for the new models?

My biggest wall deciding what camera to get for 4k video is the sensor type. Full frame? Or crop sensor. Price is a big factor: My buget is under $1,600, if possible. I like full frame because of the wider image which I assume would provide better wide screen cropping. I was looking at R6, R8, and 90D. 90D has the best price and I love the joystick for moving around the menu screens, but then there is the crop sensor.

First of all I'd like to say very good through review of the camera. Thanks a lot! Secondly I'd like to ask your opinion on this camera. I'm a fairly long time Canon DSLR shooter (mostly 7D) and I'm about to switch over to mirrorless. Full frame isn't a must have but while I'm making a change I'd like to switch over to FF finally as well. I'm not a pro by all means but when I do something I'd like to do it as best as I can. I mostly shoot birds like seagulls which doesn't really count as wildlife in my opinion, outdoor sports like soccer, voleyball or tennis and a little bit of macro. With my new camera I'd like to take a serious step into portrait photography as well. The setup I have in mind, at least to start off, is Canon R8 with Canon 24-105L f4, 50mm f1.8 stm using the adaptor. What do you think of this setup? Autofocus is important and I'm a bit worries about using adapters.

The sensor is not shielded by a curtain when changing lenses so dust contamination of the sensor in this situation is more likely in comparison to what would be the case for the R6 or R5 for example. Therefore, it seems that it is best to pair this camera with a good quality image stabilized zoom lens that covers 90% of the desired use-cases and basically leave the lens on the camera.
@NelsonPiresMusic Жыл бұрын
I’m in the camp that it’s definitely not worth the shutter wear and tear even on camera bodies that have this feature. If dust is going to to go anywhere I rather it on the sensor glass that can be easily blown off and swabbed than on the curtain that can’t be touched without being damaged.

I have recently purchased the R8 for creating underwater video's. I was a bit disappointed in the fact that the camera does not have IBIS, which makes me dependant on lens stabilisation. Stabilisation is very important underwater. However, I have come across a very interesting solution for extra stability! Have you heard of the GyroFlow software? When pairing a camera like the R8 with an actioncam such as a GoPro mounted next to each other, the software can use the gyro data from the GoPro, to accurately correct for small movements. I'm excited to try this out, as the GoPro is already in my possession! I think this a lot more accurate then the digital stabilisation canon offers.

R6 if you can swing it for the larger battery and image stabilized sensor.

Hi Simon - thanks for another very great video. I have bought the R8 as a travel camera in addition to my R5 and I love it. Regarding the battery indicator I have seen so many reviews saying "I didn't even used a single tick". The reason is that three ticks (maximum) means sufficient battery, two ticks means low battery. Really hope Canon will change this - how it is now is misleading, and probably to cover for the 'small' battery. There is no reason for this as the battery is 'okay', but, Canon, please let us know what is left on the battery as 100/75/50/25 that most other camera's.

My EOS R's menu has more accurate battery information. I believe the R8 also has. SET UP3. Battery Info.

Simon have you used the 90D? Is it still a viable option or should we go all in with mirrorless like R10 and R7 etc…
@simon_dentremont10 ай бұрын
I’ve not but have friends who have. Still a super camera capable of good photos. The R10 does have mirrorless benefits like an EVF and worth getting if not too painful financially b

Hi, I have an R7 and I'm looking for a backup camera, the R6 is out of my budget, but this R8 seems good to me, thank you for your, again, perfect explanation. Ooh and I have the 70-300 L from Canon but also the Sigma Contemporary 600mm, so perfect for the R8, wildlife shooting

Simon, thanks for the concise exploration of the R8. While I am still heavily leaning toward the R7 you gave me lots to think about.

I almost bought it. But the lack of a dedicated button for switching from Evf and LCD (for taking shots) - made me rethink my choice.
@simon_dentremont2 күн бұрын
The EVF auto,atically turns on when you look into it, and reverts to the lcd when not.
@alex_nita2 күн бұрын
@simon_dentremont that I understand. Here is some context: while walking on the street, I see a "shot" but I have to take it from the ground level. A button that would switch the evf to lcd would be an awesome "tool" for cases like this.

Hi! Great video! What Canon camera would you recommend to start shooting portrait photography? I see that a full frume camera is often suggested when shooting portraits. I would like to get an R6, as you recommends in the comments because it has IBIS, but it's a bit expensive to me, so I am wondering is the R8 worth the, almost, 1000€ more than the RP? Or maybe there is another camera I am not aware of that would work great! Your help would be much appreciated! 🙏
@simon_dentremont Жыл бұрын
I’d get the R8 over the RP to get the eye detection, and pair it with an image stabilized lens to make up the loss of the IBIS compared to the R6.

@@carlosr.2027 I’d pay the extra for the R6…IBIS, bigger battery, more robust build.

Does the R8 have a protective cover which protects the sensor when you turn it off? I had an RP which had the same body (?) no protective cover.

First of all I'm really enjoying your content I'm learning a lot about editing and photographic landscapes, which is what I also want to start photographing I'm looking for my first camera I was thinking about a Canon R50 or R10 to start this journey I would like to know if they are good options or should you look for something different in that price range, thank you very much

For landscapes, also consider an R8 full frame.

Hi Simon not sure if you answered this already but how important do you think is the loss of IBIS on this camera? This camera checks off all the marks for me for someone still entering the hobby. I don't plan on recording much and doing mostly still photography. However, if I ever decide to vlog when I travel I would like to know just how bad the no IBIS could be.
@simon_dentremont Жыл бұрын
It’s good for most, including vlogging using the digital stabilization. The latter crops though, so you need a bit wider lens. The RF 16mm f2.8 would probably be good.

Hi! First a HUGE fan. I’ve learned so much from you and it’s led to me really enjoying a hobby (finally)! Question, I have the R8 and the RF 100-800. I’m struggling keeping focus on the short ear owl (a distance away, starting to lose light). Suggestion on best settings for point of focus, and others to maximize? Any other bird any other time of day I’ve been great! I shoot auto ISO for the most part. Basically I have a lot of blurry owl images and clear background at my attempt. I appreciate your time and input. Thanks!

Do you think I should upgrade from RP to R8 if I started wildlife photo with RF 100-400 5.6-8 lens? Or it is better to take R7?

If 100-400 is your longest lens, I’d go R7. 400 on a full frame is a bit short.

That's interesting about the battery life. I have a Canon 850D (T8i) that uses the same battery. Being a DSLR it has to power more mechanically actuated stuff than a mirrorless. I often get 500+ images per battery but just last week shooting in Arkansas I was usually in auto-bracket mode and I almost never got more than the mid 200s per battery. Some of that was with an older Canon IS lens but more often not. I'm not sure why it was using more power but that battery is indeed a decent performer for its size.
