Thanks for the vid, and you're right there aren't really bad new cameras or lenses these days. I love my canon eos r, and I'm going to love it even more with this pancake lens! This smaller size and wider field of view is perfect for more immersive street/docu style photography.

28mm & 35mm are brilliant on the R7. I know you're doing video so I would lean on the 35mm since it's a stabilized lens. I personally got the 28 cuz I just love a good pancake lens lol. Hope you have a great day man!

Thanx for the first impressions review - looking for more of your thoughts on this lens... I'll be buying this lens to pair with my R5 to get a relatively "compact" travel setup. I appreciate your presentation style. I sub'd.

Great review. I have a Canon R7 APSC camera and am deciding between this lens (RF 28mm F2.8 STM full-frame) and the RF-S 10-18mm F4.5-6.3 lens. The prices of both are around the same. Which one would you recommend?

I currently have an R50 kit with the 18-45mm lens. I wanted a lens with a shorter focal length to work in the street and test a fixed focal length. I'm hesitating with this one because 44.8mm with the aps-c. And everyone says you need between 24 and 35mm for street photography. Thanks for your test.
@DavidKabra

@@Adiboudibou it's all about what you are comfortable with. Play with your kit lens and focus on the focal lengths you're interested in before buying anything. There's plenty masters of photography who have shot 50mm + like Henri Cartier-Bresson or Saul Leiter.
@Adiboudibou
@Adiboudibou 2 күн бұрын
@@DavidKabra That's what I like to do before buying a fixed focal length. Thanks for the photographic references! I still have a small doubt: do we agree that an Aps-c lens on an Aps-c sensor won't have the crop factor?

Thank You! I am considering the 28mm for my RP camera, then possibly getting on of the new Canon APS-C cameras. I do shoot street with both the RP and MFT cameras, with the Lumix GX-9 being my favorite. Having used the 14mm on a MFT, I have yet to decide if it is for me as a go-to focal length of 28mm in FF. I am so used to the 50mm field of view, and when I see something across the street being able to capture that moment, as standing in the middle of the road is impossible, or the moment would have passed, I fear losing some shots with the wide. Having said this, if I can get in close, the 28mm view is interesting, and renders well, unless I tilt the lens and get distortions --- I will not use street photos when they make someone look bad. If Canon has produced a decent pancake here, it will be the hot seller indeed, with a 45mm field of view equivalent with the crop sensor little cameras. What I would love to see is the Canonet range finder style camera return, with a tilt only screen. I hate flip-out screens with a passion. The Ricoh GR cameras have a fixed screen, which is OK, but then again I am now old and moving the whole body down to frame the shot is a pain -- I mean to really, the next day. 😒 But ya gotta get the shot, no matter what. My street stuff is on the Net, if you have some free time. Thanks again for the video, Loren

For MFT I use a Panasonic 12-35 2.8 & Olympus 17mm 1.8 as my main lenses. 35mm equivalent is my comfort zone & it's pretty small. The zoom when I want a chill day or with family. Since you're used to 50mm for street have you tried 35mm? I bought a manual lens first for $100ish to see if I like it. Then slowly got into 28mm. My first real 28mm was a Canon FD lens that I adapted on my camera.

I’m looking for the same thing. I like flip up screens instead of the flip out. Cameras are all so good now it’ll probably come down to that for my next camera. I wanted to get the new Nikon zf c I think it’s called and then saw it had they typical flip out screen and moved on

Get some step up rings! I had a set for my older 50 1.8 that made it match my other small lenses. I'm waiting for a refund through Amazon to pick up this lens. With my RF16, EF40, this will be a great addition to my travel kit for my R8 and R7. Just got a Tamron 35-150mm to use as well to round it out. Allows me to keep the bigger, more expensive glass (85 1.4, 50 1.2, 100L Macro, 50-100 1.8, 135L, 24-70, 12-24) at home or strictly for work.

I just hate the way they look 😅 but you right it only makes sense. I've been slowly turning into a primes guy even for professional work. Lmk how you feel about the Tamron. My 24-70 G2 sometimes loses focus and I have to reconnect to the body. Also love the lens collection man

Surprisingly R7 shots looks impressive and little better than R6 shots though I have both bodies. But I don't have 28MM lense. What's your view on this ?
@DavidKabra
@DavidKabra 8 ай бұрын
Probably two things editing style & first time shooting 28 on full frame. With the R7 crop factor the field of view is very natural to me. I can visually see the frame before taking photo. I also edited to be a warmer style. Vs on the R6 feels like I left a lot of space and could've gone closer. Small vignettes on the corners and the editing style leans more on the cooler side. Since then I'm more comfortable with 28mm on full frame. Long story short. User error lol.

I’m thinking of buying this lens mainly for video, going to be using it with the canon r6 mk ii. How is the autofocus.
@DavidKabra
@DavidKabra Жыл бұрын
For this video I'm doing the talking head with the 28 on a tripod with the R6II. Studio lens it's perfect. The autofocus doesn't hunt and pretty much stuck to me the whole time and wasn't loud. Since then I've handheld a few times but with digital stabe on and haven't noticed any ibis wobbles Personally I prefer the 35mm over the 28mm for video

@@DavidKabra I have the r6 mk ii, the 35 mm is a little slow when it comes to autofocus, because it’s a macro lens, I wanted to pick up the rf 24 mm but it is also a macro lens. I will just go with the rf 28 mm. I picked up the hohem isteady mt2 AI gimbal, I’m currently using the rf 16 mm, I really wanted a 24 mm focal length. The max payload is 2.64 pounds. None of my canon L lenses work

@@DavidKabra I do, I have the weebil s that can handle up to 7 pounds, this new Ai gimbal is really amazing with the AI tracking. There’s no other gimbal that can do that. The hohem isteady MT2 is a content creators dream. They need to come out with one that can handle a much heavier payload. I even tried the canon rf 14 to 35 witch weights about a pound, but the lens is too big, it’s an L lens.

how pronounced is the focusing sound and the extending of the lens? is it unusable for candid street photography?

3:30 most of my photo examples are candid. The lens doesn't extend much. No one is going to hear the lens autofocus. I use this mainly on my R7 as my daily lens without any complaints. If you need more examples my IG @ kabra.jpg the latest photos were shot on the 28mm

Really depends, when I go on holiday I take a zoom and a prime lens. Zoom when I need versatility and I can't physically move closer to my subject and a prime cuz they are smaller and can open my aperture. This keeps my pack small. I don't know your comfort/budget level, so I don't want to give you a specific setup.
