VIDEO CORRECTION: someone pointed out that I mixed up the images at 9:26. Total accident! Thank you for the person who pointed it out. I will update it on my blog post. I always triple-check my stuff, but human error happens, and things can fall through the cracks. Will be updating it in the blog!

Canon really needs to allow third party native full frame lenses on the RF mount. Seriously, $2800 for a lens is ridiculous.

I think you may have mixed up the images at 9:26. Btw, another advantage of the cheaper 2.0 lens is that it is also a near-marco lens. It's great for close-ups such as say, wedding rings.

Oh. my. gosh. I did!!! Shoot. I always triple-check my stuff, but there definitely are things that can fall through the cracks. I will update it in my blog post and maybe make a pinned post in the comments here. Thank you for letting me know!!

i would go by what min focus distance you need. Aside from that, the sharpness between the two IS different. The 'L' lens is by far superior, and the color rendering is just better overall.

Always love your videos Jessica! I’ve been shooting professionally for decades and the RF 85mm f1.2 L USM is as close to optically perfect as any lens I’ve ever seen!

Despite its heft, the RF 85mm 1.2 balances nicely with the R5 body - optically it's the best lens within the RF lineup (maybe together with the RF135mm 1.8) - I can highly recommend it.

Do not forget the nifty fifty 1.2 in that line-up. I catch so much light with it that I can do things with it I can do with no other lens.

I still use my 85 f/1.8 USM with an adapter and it is still amazing. Would love to eventually upgrade, but it is doing the job pretty well.

I have and love the 85mm f2. I will likely one day upgrade to the 1.2, however I will miss the size and the macro capabilities of the f2. I'm just a sucker for a fast prime!
@lukasvandewiel8604 ай бұрын
That beauty of a 1.2 goes new for € 3.249 now, which is would be 3.630 US$. 2.800 is the second hand price if you are lucky to find it that 'cheap', although are still usually in very good condition. 🙂Keep in mind that a lens is more than a focal length and an aperture. Bleeding fast autofocus is also great, and in general way more solid construction. You really do get your money worth.

My RF 85/f2 compared to my RF 24-70L. Both set to f2.8 85 and the zoom at 70mm also 2.8. The prime is sharper.
@JessicaWhitaker5 ай бұрын
Ohhh that is interesting. That might be an interesting video to do as well! Use the popular 24-70 and set it at most of the popular prime lengths. Compare the difference. Primes are usually sharper but I know some photographers who ONLY use the 24-70 for weddings. So that could be a good idea for a video!

I remember before mirrorless the best L primes were around $1000 - $1500. The price increase for lenses since they went mirrorless is insane (all brands).
@nicedward75445 ай бұрын
@@77dris ya I really don't understand what's going on. DSLR days were when r&d big breakthroughs in lens design were happening that laid the groundwork for the amazing glass we have today. It's technically easier to make lenses for mirrorless as well. I think it has to do with cameras hitting a wall performance wise and people aren't buying bodies like they used to. In the nineties every new model iteration was a huge leap in tech. I think companies are now relying on glass more than bodies for profits.
@nicedward75445 ай бұрын
@@77dris further with this point is I know plenty of working pros that still use 5-10 year old bodies and dslrs. I see so many of the younger photographers flexing and arguing over the latest and greatest lenses and it's kinda hilarious. My 200 I use is the Canon prime 2.8 from 1990 and I'll never trade it for some $2000 clinical thing that everyone raves about.

@@nicedward7544 I'm one of them. I use my Canon 5D Mark IV and EF lenses, one of which is 15 years old! ;) My job is to review gear, and this is one of those videos. :)
@JessicaWhitaker5 ай бұрын
@@nicedward7544 I agree with you that a lot of people, regardless of age, like to buy the latest and greatest. I would rather put that $ toward a vacation or a handbag than another camera. Also what's funny is, I second shoot for someone who even though I have told multiple times I am most familiar with my Canon 5D Mark IV, they insist I shoot on my mirrorless R camera (that I use to film youtube videos on- love it for that) because they "prefer the mirrorless look". I was gagged because mirrorless doesn't have a "look" it's just the technology. It might look a little different but honestly, in the end result. It's not. Perfect example.
