I use this lens all the time for weddings, portraits, and even some sports (wrestling). Been really happy with the results.

@@Thedivinevision.19if you use the focus limiter you'll have much faster focusing. If you leave it set to 'full' then it can struggle. I always leave it in the middle and I'm happy with the focus.

7:27 the "blurry" photo of your friend. 1. What is the shutter speed and aperture in this photo. Was the shutter speed to long for hand held even with IS turned on. Or was the IS turned of. 2. Did you use a lense hood for the 85 mm to avoid stray light and lens flares and lover contrast in photo. 3. perhaps the sharpness is on the pine tree to the right? I know this lens in generel is a sharp lens, so I'm a little surpriced about this "blurry" photo. I like the rest of your video, keep up the good work.

I have this lens, and I use it professionally, in relation to price, quality is fantastic, knowing a little about photography we get great benefit from it, it is very sharp even at f.2

I started out doing photojournalism in 1970 with a pair of Nikon F bodies equipped with 35mm f/2 and 85mm f/1.8 lenses. I loved the results I got with portraits using the 85mm. Later when I went to work for a master portrait photographer I learned why that focal length works so well for head and shoulders cropped portraits-near far perspective is a factor of shooting distance and with a full frame (e.g. 35mm format) camera the near far perspective of nose vs. ear size on human subject is ideal at the same distance needed for an in camera head and shoulders crop. Anything shorter in focal length requires moving closer to the subject to get the in-camera H&S crop but moving closer makes the nose start to appear larger relative to the ears and isn’t as flattering for most faces.

I appreciate the review, but one thing that I have to comment on is turning off the lens correction. Why? If my eyesight is blurry, that is my true representation of my vision, or is it? I can put on glasses and suddenly, the blurry vision is crisp and clear. It seems as though quite a few lenses have the issue that the image is not quite as good without correction. In the end, the corrections seem to make the photo look better, just as glasses may make someone's vision better. I would be more concerned if the images look awful after the correction profile was applied. Just an observation.

Great review. One of my most hated lenses. Have to absolutely agree with all that's said here. Now I will say. I only used it for 4 hours max. It wouldn't track my fast moving toddler. And the autofocus was also slow going from short to Long distance as mentioned. So I returned it. Great review as always my dude.

@@MarcusNunes the 100/2.8 macro is the cheapest RF prime with Nano USM. For more versatility there’s the 70-200/4. Both are 2x as expensive as the 85.

@@officialvisaural I thought about the 100 f/2.8, but I wasn't sure about it. I was always more inclined to buy the 85 f/2, since the 85 f/1.2 is too expensive for me. I think maybe the 70-200 f/4 isn't fast enough for my use, though.

I used this lens when shooting “simulated surfing” in Hawaii last summer. The lens physical quality SUCKED as it always felt like something was loose inside it. HOWEVER, unlike a lot of these comments, my image quality was pretty high up there, I never knew how hated this lens was until now. Also, I returned it after I got let go from that shoot so I can’t test it… maybe that’s for the better.

Mine broke right on 12 months. Off to canon for repair , thank god got 2 year warantee on it. Only thing im worried about is i bought it brand new on ebay, just hoping canon dont denies claim because it ebay and not propper shop Is a good lens and not a bad macro lens. Can't attach ring lights to it. No focus shift like with rf 100mm macro

I’m not sure why you’re talking about doing macro at f2. That’s not really a thing and when you do that of course you’ll have CA in the image. But, this lens is a budget lens so even closed down a bit you’ll see some. I still like mine though I don’t use it though

IMO, the RF 100mm macro only costs a little bit more and has far less CA and is ultra sharp, even wide open. It is slightly slower aperture-wise, but the IQ is just very good. This lens is just ok. It's macro on a budget. The 100mm lens does a better macro reproduction too of 1:1.4.

No. The rf 85 f2 is crazy sharp, slow to focus sure, but fun to use and take great photos for social.

There is no third party lenses for the canon RF lens system. Canon just has some cheaper alternatives :) And the difference is just over all quality. They are not bad tho.

I would say probably just get the 85mm. I think that would help, especially the f2 aperture will make a big difference. 35mm and 50mm is more used in street photography but the 85mm is versatile and will give you a different perspective

I have R lenses and this one, and you should not compare them. To keep saying this is not an L series lens is oxymoronic. If you are not clicking “remove chromatic aberration” as part of your Lightroom workflow, then you are not taking full advantage of a LR fix for the shortcomings of non-L glass with this and similar lenses. The glass on this lens is more than adequate.

I tried this lens. Wasn't a fan. Images weren't sharp. Especially how I wanted. The AF on it was SLOW. If it lost focus, it took forever to get it back.
