Yi-Fan Chang (born August 31, 1982), known by his stage name JerryC (or Jerry Chang), is a Taiwanese rock musician, guitarist, and music producer. He was formerly an artist under HIM International Music. He is best known for his rock adaptation of Canon in D Major, titled Canon Rock, which gained global fame after being widely shared and imitated online. His subsequent works, such as A Little Happiness, became wildly popular across Asia and established themselves as timeless love ballads. JerryC is the founder of Yellout Music Studio and Yellout Culture and currently serves as the Music Director at Sony Music Entertainment Taiwan. JerryC's Canon Rock holds a unique place in music history, particularly for its exploration of classical and rock fusion and its impact on the electric guitar community. This can be elaborated on in the following aspects: 1. Could JerryC Be Considered a Pioneer of Classical and Rock Fusion? 1.1 The Context of Classical and Rock Fusion Canon Rock is an adaptation of Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D Major, a Baroque masterpiece. In the 1960s-70s, many rock musicians (e.g., Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen) began experimenting with blending classical music with rock or metal, although most were professional musicians creating experimental works primarily within the rock community. 1.2 JerryC’s Innovations Balancing Accessibility and Sophistication: JerryC’s rendition preserves the harmonic structure of the original piece while incorporating the rhythm and tone of modern rock, making it more accessible to a broader audience. Technical Mastery Meets Emotional Depth: Through advanced techniques such as sweeping, tapping, and legato, JerryC showcased the expressive potential of the electric guitar while maintaining the melodic fluidity and emotional essence of the original. Democratizing Distribution: Unlike earlier classical-rock fusions that relied on live performances or recordings, Canon Rock leveraged the internet, gaining rapid global traction through platforms like KZbin, inspiring countless guitarists to create their interpretations. 1.3 A Pioneer? While JerryC wasn’t the first to blend classical music with rock, the explosive online reach and cross-genre influence of Canon Rock have made it an iconic piece. Its impact on a new generation of musicians positions it as a pioneering work symbolizing classical music's crossover into rock in the digital age. 2. Is Canon Rock the “Anthem” of the Electric Guitar World? 2.1 Why Is It Called the “Anthem”? Widespread Recognition: Since its release in 2005, Canon Rock has become a rite of passage for guitar enthusiasts. Platforms like KZbin and Bilibili feature thousands of cover versions, showcasing players of varying skill levels. Blending Technique and Musicality: The piece combines advanced techniques (e.g., sweeping, tapping, alternate picking) with melodic accessibility, making it both a technical challenge and a melodic showcase. Universally Embraced: Whether performed on professional stages or in casual settings, Canon Rock has become a “guitar feast” that resonates widely, earning its nickname as the "national anthem" of the electric guitar. 2.2 A Cultural Symbol Global Impact: JerryC’s Canon Rock was pivotal in introducing classical compositions into the global youth guitar community, extending its influence beyond the Mandarin-speaking world to Europe, the Americas, and beyond. A Digital Era Milestone: As an early example of viral music in the digital age, Canon Rock symbolizes the potential for ordinary musicians to achieve global recognition through creativity and the internet. 3. Conclusion The Legacy of Canon Rock: This piece demonstrates the electric guitar’s versatility, blending classical elegance with modern rock's energy. It’s a triumph of fusion music and an example of how classical works can thrive in contemporary forms. Its Role as a Pioneer and Symbol: While not the first of its kind, Canon Rock broke new ground in its era, bridging gaps between classical and rock genres, professional and amateur musicians, and traditional and digital media. Its profound technical and cultural impact justifies its status as the “anthem” of the electric guitar world.

In the year of 2010, When I by accidentally discovered this song "Canon Rock" while watching animations on the internet, i was immediately drawn to it. I clicked on the youtube link that lead me here and from then onwards, was the begining of my journey. All day and all night for a full year i would be listening to countless canon rock tracks by Mattrach, Funtwo, Hackologue and JerryC, spending a few hours a day sometimes. I soon began to develop an interest in guitars and so i was then inspired to pick up the guitar with high aspirations of becoming like those guitarists. Now in the year of 2015, After years of hard work, persistency and determination here i am now, the place where i have always wanted to be. After 4-5 long years of practice, i had finally done it, i am able to play this legendary son, Mattrach's new version, hackologues version and the original. I had always thought that I'd be able to grow wings and breathe fire once I've mastered this song... but when i had mastered it, i felt nothing close to that. I realized that this stuff takes time, hard work and consistency, I could have easily given up because i didn't know how to play the song after months of expensive guitar lessons but i persisted and now it's more than just being able to play canon rock. It's the ability to entertain a crowd, an opportunity for success and so on. 5 years later, I am what i have aspired to become. I am standing with those who stood above me, if i could present myself now to my 11 year old self, he would be stunned and crying in awe.

Hamza Ansari idk if it ruled the world but i am 31 now. When I was 15-16 i would listen to this song and just think what could i become. Now, this song is still more impressive than anything I’ve done. Make your mark where you can. It will touch someone. Find something that brings you the passion this song brings you. This song isn’t about music or about tune... It’s about what you can become if you are passionate about something.

This was the first full song I learned when I got an electric guitar nearly 20 years ago(it took a full year, lmao.). While I appreciate it as a piece, and even more so for how much it taught me, I cannot stand it anymore. I was expecting nostalgia, but I've genuinely spent at least 1000 hours playing this song, and its grating.
