I don't even have a problem with the R1 not being a full flagship, my problem is that when the R3 they were like "The R3 the flagship? Don't insult us, the R3 isn't even close to what we can do, just wait for the R1." Then the R1 releases and it's literally an R3.

I really think it’s because the R1 feels so much like an incremental update to the R3. It makes it seem like Canon couldn’t decide on what the R1 was going to be, even though they had years to decide. As a sports photographer, I will say that my Canon R3 is a true beast. When put in the hands of a professional photographer with skills, it is unmatched. And remember, long before any of these cameras ever existed, photographers were taking excellent sports photos over 50 years ago. Back then, you actually needed real skills. So it wasn't the camera, it was the knowledge of the photographer and not the camera. The professional lens selection for sports shooting is also unmatched. The RF 1200mm the Canon RF 100-300mm and the RF 400mm. With all of that said, I am totally 100% on board with the Canon R1. There has been much debate and many fake rumors about the capability of this camera over the years. Personally, I'll say this to all of the haters. Don't buy it. Stick with whatever you have or sell all of your Canon gear and move over to another camera brand. This camera will not make you a better photographer unless you already have exceptional skills. This camera is built and designed for professional shooters, not amateurs. And if you think it's cost too much that's okay. If you don't have the money, don't worry about it. Stick with what you have or go buy something cheaper. And just to let you know, yes, I do think it is too expensive, but I'm going to buy it anyway regardless. With all that said, let the rumor mill begin for the next 4 years on the Canon R1 Mark 2.

Even the R6 II is a beast. I shot as a pro for over 15 years using Canon's 1D cams which were the best sport cams on the planet. Got the R6 II last year and it blowowowows the 1D cameras I used out of the water in every area except battery life and build (the 1D's were like pro power tools). Even using adapted 70-200 2.8 III lenses the R6 II keeper rate shooting fast sports like hockey is nearly 99% compared to maybe 50% with the 1D III.

Happily preordered the R1 at the announce. To my view this is a failure of canon marketing, not a canon product. The R1 is more or less exactly what it should be, do i care about AI upscaling or denoise? Nope, but this is exactly what the canon 1 series has always been. The 5Dmk4 was 30mp to the 1dXmk2's 20, the 1dxIII stayed at the same 20. Sony and Nikon choosing to make their most expensive cameras high resolution, and Canon accepting the premise of what a "Flagship" should be when the reality is they were staying the course with their product lines is what the issue really seems to be. This kind of thing is extremely common in the PC space where things like commercial workstations or ECC memory are significantly more expensive than even high level gaming PCs despite being objectively less capable in a number of ways. In that space it's to be celebrated when something like the R5mk2 exists where the more generally desirable set of specifications geared towards the more mass market is the significantly cheaper option. Most tech companies would crank the price on both of these systems and just shrug their shoulders when people commented that they are out of reach. Is the R1 a worthy upgrade to the R3? Maybe, maybe not. We are in a pretty awesome space now where most camera upgrades are going to be pretty marginal kind of no matter what. Image quality is fantastic all the way around, auto focus is going to get better but its still fantastic all around, and there is extremely healthy competition across the entire space which is exactly what you want. I guess when we see the A1 mk2 or the Z9mk2 we can start to see what the other companies consider worthy upgrades, I suspect they will be similar in their scope(which just means you don't need to upgrade if you don't want to!) For me canon is the no brains choice period until sony or nikon start coming out with the same kinds of glass that Canon has been putting out(even if you're not buying it, the availability of rentals make it usable for just about any situation) That is the primary difference in the systems at this point, and while all the systems have fantastic glass that will cover all the bases only Canon has the stuff that is the best at covering all situations.

As a long-time Canon DSLR user, yes, it's warranted. They've had so long to figure out what their flagship was going to be, and while it may excel in a few certain (and very niche) areas, it overall falls so short of what is being offered from other brands at a similar price point. Far less overall performance and features in a much larger package. And the same can be said for pretty much their entire mirrorless line. If they were going to catch up, they should have done it by now, but they're still lagging way behind. They're out of the race for me entirely at this point, and I'll be continuing to explore options from Sony or Fuji.

The main problem is, that the R1 does not make enough noise. So far there are no real world Tests of the final product out there besides short Hand-ons, but because of the low MP (which is totally in line with Canon‘s 1-Series) and other not so spectacular specs it has to be bad, disappointing, but in the end it is a Camera that has to deliver for the target group of photographers. I was surprised to see an article on PETA Pixel, that Canon has the biggest market share in mirrorless cameras…does not look as if they would fall behind in anything. Another problem is, that Canon did not bring out the R1 in 2020, instead they released the DX3 and 2021 the R3, which leads to confusion, what the R3 was/is in the line up…i simply think it was a trial run, a R1b. The R1 comes out 4 years after the 1DX Mark III, it is Canons Flagship Camera, how they define it since the first DX.

But as the R5 is a mainstay for video creators they've kept it small to put on gimbles and such is my guess. I think that R1 is so good in teh hands that no pro would not go that over R5 in real world sports and birds , and i would love to see @canon do a r5L body for just photo peeps so then it could have the built in grip and maybe cut some vide features out . Sensor size does not make a Camera a flagship. While the camera could be faster on shot speed. What people who would be looking for are duel cards, spot on focus and quick read out of the sensor. What’s funny is they didn’t call the R3 a flagship, but everyone else said “that’s your current flagship so that’s what we’re gonna call it until your true flagship comes out.” Fast forward to the R1 and the main thing that stands out from the R3 is mainly the AF. I’m sure it’ll be great for pros, but come on now. At least bump the megapixels up into the 30s…32-36mp at least. Also, the one thing I’m personally waiting to see from Canon is a telephoto of around 150-600 at f/5.6 or f/6.3 at 600mm. Their 100-500 might be suitable and I’m sure it’s fine at 500mm with the maximum aperture of f/7.1, but man, that price point is just too high in my opinion. Some might disagree and that’s fine. This is just my opinion.

things have changed and so companies like Canon and Sony make two flagship cameras to accommodate two type of professional users. Yes now we have two type of professional users who need the appropriate camera that suites their needs. The sport and journalist type that they do not need a high megapixel camera but a very fast with great autofocus to catch the moment they like and seek and need a big and robust body to handle the elements and the big heavy lenses they normally use. Then they are the other professional users who are dedicated to landscape and wild life and macro and portrait photography who need big resolution cameras with high megapixels to catch the maximum detail and do not need big lenses and camera body to carry for they are in move all the time and they do not need to take thousands of photos to catch the moment they seek. So now we have two type of professionals with different needs and likes and so the companies produce two types of flagship cameras to satisfy both of their needs and this is why Cannon presented them both at the same time. Sony is doing the same with their A1 and A9III cameras they are both flagship cameras that are fulfilling the desires of the two types of professionals. Before people need one flagship camera that would suite both type of professionals for there was not a big difference between their flagship and the other lighter professional camera on the megapixel counts.. Like the Eos !DXii and 5Dmarkiii they were very close in megapixels and so the !DXii could be assigned as a flagship camera for all uses and assignments for it was more robust and had better autofocus.

After the initial financial outlay for the R5, as an amateur stills shooter for wildlife, there’s just not enough incentive to buy this very expensive camera. If I didn’t have an R5 and needed a camera of that quality, I’d buy the now much cheaper R5 above the mark 2.

I’ve accused the fro of being a bit of a Canon apologist in the past but I’ll say you gave them a pretty fair shake here. The R3II assessment I think is spot on - a flagship camera in my view is one that has the tech and features to excel in almost every facet of photography, and the R1 is instead more of a specialty sports/wildlife/journalism camera. That could still potentially be a flagship camera if it’s specs absolutely outgunned the rest of the market, but in that niche the A9III outpaces it, and I would say the Z9 and A1 are both better “all around” cameras due to their greater sensor resolutions. I do give them credit on the R5II, I think they got a lot right there to build on the original R5, but at the same time they priced it higher than a lot of competing models that have already been out on the market, some of which (namely the Z8) still outpace it in some areas. This whole release from Canon feels like a rushed exercise to get product out on the market, and it’s hard not to think that haste was motivated by what their competitors have done recently. For as much as Canon was a titan of the DSLR market for so long, now they feel like a company who’s scraping and clawing to try to keep up in mirrorless.

I really think that like canons other cameras the camera comes to life when you use it and realize that the new functions do make a difference. For a "small" to medium business a setup for both photo and video could be the R1 (24 mp BSI) and the C400 (26mp BSI) both with C-log 2... a good do it all combo for professionals.

Jared, Of the two cameras both the R5 Mark II and the R1 have improved focus capabilities, and stacked sensors with faster readouts and 14 bit electronic shutter sensor output. The R5 Mark II is $4299 and with the battery grip and the new P battery purchases required for some of the new features brings the total to around $5000. My question is that being the R5 is currently available new for less than $2400 in NYC is the improvement really worth twice the price? I think that most people would be very happy with an R5 for $2400 as opposed to the R5 Mark II at $5000. That’s a 2 for 1 price difference and $2500 can get you a couple of L RF Mount lenses. What do you think about this analysis given how good the Canon autofocus already is?

My only problem with this is that the sensor readout is too slow and the body doesn’t have two CF memory card slots. Sony has got to be close to releasing the Alpha 1 version II. @@froknowsphoto the slow readout speed of the R5II means that rolling shutter is still an issue with birding photography. Yes, it's better than the original R5, but no, it's inferior to the R3 @ 4ms. It's AF will be marginally better than the R5, a near 5 year old camera... if you're shooting birds, like I do, the R5II is better than an original R5, but not enough to warrant upgrading from said original R5 to the R5II. @@froknowsphoto , Everyone who shoots events is going to need the extra P batteries and likely will want the two batteries for the extra shots that it will offer. From my experience you generally need a set of two batteries and a spare set . In the old days you needed 3 bodies to get insurance coverage on paid events and they needed regular maintenance inspections based upon use. When I was busy I had to get my camera bodies cleaned and lubricated every 3 months. The local repair service guy offered yearly rates to most of us. I just chalked it up to overhead expenses but it was not cheap. Today, I often see weddings being done with a single full frame camera and an APS-C backup. All the best but I don’t think that someone who wants the R5 Mark II is going to be ok with just one or two batteries. I think that 4 batteries and a grip are essential given the amount of power that these cameras consume. I’m not anti R5 Mark II just not convinced that it is worth twice as much as the R5 for stills photographers. For video it is a significant improvement but is hampered by the single CF slot with 2 TB limitation. If you are shooting the faster frame rates you simply don’t have a backup. That’s OK for some but not for most professionals.

Canon’s problem is satisfying the masses without satisfying the masses. If they release an R1 with all the bells and whistles then what do they release in a few years as a follow-up or what do they put in a different camera so that it doesn’t cannibalize from another? Already they have consumers stating they are not upgrading from a R5 or people turning to a R3 instead of an R1. If they released an R1 that was 50-60 mp, shot 40fps and could do 8k and didn’t overheat; would you buy an R5m2 or any other camera? However a camera with all those features would certainly cost over $8500. What prosumer would pay that? What everyday Joe would even look at it? An average person will buy an expensive car or house because it’s a necessity but not a camera that isn’t used everyday. A camera like everyone is wishing for would either be a one time purchase or would sit on store shelves because everyone would be happy - there wouldn’t be a need for an upgrade which is what some people are saying now. They are happy with their R5, R3, R7, R6,R62. Canon is treading carefully in what to produce while trying to figure out how can they get you coming back in a few years. Technology is improving but it’s not improving fast enough to be able to excite you every few years without breaking the bank. So it’s best to stay comfortable with the niche cameras. Everyone falls into one of those niche categories in how they use a camera but everyone wants that one all inclusive camera at a very cheap price and Canon won’t do it because they can.

The 1D have never been about MPx. Low shutter speed = high ISO (often) = low SNR, so you want large pixels, thus low MPx. The r3 existence is a bit weird, for sure, and confuse the naming scheme. On a personnal note, I don't find camera release very intersting nowadays. I can speak to why I'm choosing the R1 over the R5-ii. I choose the R1 primarily due to 1) the body design; 2) probable best implemented AF canon offers currently; 3) buffer depth. Secondary reasons include probable better low light performance. Hesitated for a slight bit due to the 24 mp vs 45 on the R5-II. In the final analysis I felt the 45 mp would be more of a liability than a benefit. Don't like the bigger files. Have little to no need for cropping 95-99% of the time. If I need extra reach I'll get longer lenses. Would I prefer same R1 specs with 45 mp? Sure. But I would not be willing to sacrifice any of the aforementioned R1 benefits to get it. Hard for me to say that the R1 was rushed. I personally think the R1 was literally the camera cannon wanted to release, and believed was the best fit for the intended audience. In 4.5 years, I would think Canon had enough time and resources to bring a "better spec-ed" flagship camera to market. I don't think they wanted to. If that was a mistake or not I guess sales figures will tell. 🙂So far public opinion is not a good predictor of the R1's success...that's for sure.

I have the R6ii which also has a native range up to 102,400 and it's low light performance is mind blowing: I regularly shoot images at 40, 50,000 or higher and they're really clean even before denoising them. There are other benefits to lower MP too such as the diffraction limited aperture is better: the R1 has a DFA of f/9.7 whereas the R5ii DFA is f/7.1 so as you stop down to f/8 or narrower the diffraction starts to have an effect negating the higher resolution benefits. For those of us who wanted top notch AF and 45mp stacked sensor with fast readout speed, the R5II is a failure on all accounts. No cross type AF. Shitty slow sensor readout speed of around 8ms. I don't give a fuck about video content, as I'm a stills photographer, so the video upgrades are worthless to me personally. I was hoping that the R5II would have a readout speed of 4ms (same as R3), 45mp AND the same AF system as the R1. Course it's deserved they need to bring out a decent APSC camera to compete with OM1 and G9ii - it has a bigger sensor than the latter but has worse low light performance and dynamic range amongst many other shortfalls

I think their APS-C cameras are great. If you want a fully packed camera, you go full frame. You can't have it all for a lower price in APS-C, there has to be trade offs.

@froknowsphoto £6.5k is ridiculous just for some better low light and depth of field (in my opinion, the latter is subjective the former definitely objective) APSC should be the king of the ring being the mid point of full frame and M43. Yet it's treated like a ginger step child. Who in their right mind wants an APSC camera and the advantages that could bring to then whack on a huge full frame telephoto onto it? Madness. A mirrorless D500 is how many years too late at this point?!

First, let me say “Thanks” for all of the good content. My thoughts on the R1… it’s like owning a Tesla, meaning the “Features” you want will (hopefully) be delivered one day with software updates, which are only possible because of the awesome hardware you already own. Think about it… almost every time you said “flagship?”, it was about something that could be fixed with an update. Next, Do you think that 24 megapixels disqualifies you from being “‘flagship”? If you’re limited to only shooting uncompressed/raw at 20 megapixels, does that disqualify you? If you can shoot 120 fps, but only in Jpg, does that? Or, if you’re limited to CFX type A, does that? Ok you get where I’m going… the A9III, the A1, the Z9, and the R1 are all fashion models you can marry… one has a mole on her forehead, one has a mole on her hand that touches your hand when you hold hands, and one has a mole on her baby toe so she walks funny…. None are 100% perfect!!!! I would be honored to own any, but I have lots of Canon glass, so …. There’s that.

That is except for durable pro body, larger more capable battery, and sub par autofocus compared to the R1 and still video overheating without the purchase of an expensive add on grip. Why did they lower the rear LCD resolution from the R3, and lose the super fast 195fps mode? Not sure why it's worth more than the A9III which is only expensive due to the global shutter. R3 was $1500 too much, R1 is $1K too much. Laughable that they want $800 more than the Z9. R5II would be my choice any day of the week.

I think Canon is a bit like Apple and that's not "bad." These cameras are iterative updates in much the same way as Iphones which rarely have big changes. So we get better AF for sports, a little bit better video specs, a little nicer EVF. Its not much different than Sony and Nikon. They're not exactly lighting the world on fire with innovation either. I would llke to see some fundamental changes, like serious amounts of computational photography, built in memory, really great wifi and cloud backup, and better interfaces. This will be much more compelling than having a few more FPS and slightly better AF.

There is no need for a fan grip - that's why it's only one option out of three. What the grip allows you to do though is shoot in very demanding situations where it becomes useful, e.g. video shooting in the middle of summer in Phoenix.... Why put that extra cooling design and extra cost across the board for all situation shooting when it would likely only come into effect for a smaller percentage of time? That's where you went wrong - you assumed because there was a fan grip it meant it needed it.

Let's see what the first software upgrade has to offer for the R1? Maybe they can upgrade the specs in the software to cover the area's everyone says is lacking in the flagship. There are plenty of amazing innovations in this camera to make it great but maybe not what Canon are claiming flagship. I was a little disappointed and surprised about the specs but as a long time Canon user I'd still take one if someone gave me one.

I think what people are really upset about with the r1 is the mp not being 45+. Though historically flagships have been lower mp. It’s only since the a1 that “flagship” cameras became high mp. But their peak photojournalism, wildlife, and sports camera is the a9 series, which had been their top tier performance camera for years before the existence of the a1. Nikon has the only real camera that fits the title of being a top tier photojournalism, wildlife, and sports camera as a flagship. The r1 is on the same level of mp of previous canon flagships, which have been lower mp cameras than others and never been an issue until now. People are putting their own personal expectations on what the companies should do or call a flagship. The r1 is an a9iii competitor, not the a1. The r5ii is an a1 competitor, as the Sony flagship a1 wasn’t really that much better than the r5. Each company has their own personal definition of what cameras are and it’s not up to us to answer or label them as such.

Except you seem to forget that the word "flagship" actually has a real meaning. And people are going to understand that Canon is dead wrong to suggest that it's their best and most important product. Already the public thinks the R5 MK2 is. So the problem lies with Canon, not the consumer!
