Canon SX280 vs SX700 Review

I just returned my new SX280 due to the battery problem and purchased the SX700 which I managed to locate at a cheaper price, so all in all I am happy to hear the problem is fixed.

I had the same problem with the 280 and returned it . I just tested out the 700 in best buy and the shot to shot time was very decent grabed focus on moving subjects. Thanks for review ...

The SZ700 is built like a tank. It has a full metal jacket and is built to last....a very long time. Pics are great and the interface is typical pf all Canons...spot on and very easy to understand.

Great review and very helpful. Two years ago I bought Canon SX240 x20 zoom and I am still with it, I do both photography and like you more of video. Talking about video sx240 has 3 problems: 1. Zooming makes noise, audible during playback particularly quite video. (I notice that from your video, this problem still exists in sx700), however, I have another two cameras Panasonic TZ20 & 30, it makes no noise 2. Zooming is not smooth, it jumps or jerks every time you zoom in or out closer or further - This make video footage shaky. But TZ20/30 is fine as its zooming is smooth like any other video cameras or camcorders. 3. Not at all good for shooting concerts or shows with louder stereo music with multiple sound speakers. Sound is so horrible that it actually ruins the video. It may be fine in the indoors or auditorium but sometimes it ruins there too depending what wattage they sound system is. I use TZ cameras for such occasion but it has its own disadvantage, it blurs temporarily /autofocus during zooming now that I am really thinking of buying sx700 very soon, I would like to know if the problem of SX240/260 still exists in SX700 ref. 2 & 3 above. thanks again.

Hello from Scotland ... you can reduce the noise of the wind if you go into the menu and go to wind filter and select on. I also turned up the sharpness and it makes a difference.

Hello Alexander, I am from México City and my english is not very good, I wold like to know how is the audio quality of the SX700?? I like to record concerts and upload them to youtube, but with the camera that I have (Canon PowerShot SX280) some times when the music is very strong, the video is saturated, So I wonder if with this camera I will have the same problem or if you could give me some tips to prevent the problem... To Mary. For a point-and-shoot camera, this ranks among the best in taking pictures. It works admirably in scenes with adequate light. You do get some noise with darker conditions, and it doesn't have panorama or HDR (capturing bright and dark subjects at the same time)

Additionally, for a safari, I think you are going to love the zoom and the fast shutter times!

It's nice to see that they fixed the 280's battery issues in the 700, but that doesn't help people who paid over $300 for the 280 and have to live with the battery issues despite the firmware update that was supposed to fix them.

Great review, Alexander. Wondering how is the audio quality of the SX700. In your sample clip, it doesn't sound so good, understandably because of the wind noise. How is the audio indoors? I wish you post a raw sample video indoors. I'd be happy to see how it performs. Thanks, Alexander.

The sound quality is sufficient for the videos I've been making. It does not hold up too well with wind noise, however, and I have to fix wind noise in iMovie (I did not fix wind noise in this review). The speaker is not directional, so sounds will be picked up from the area you're filming rather than what's being shot in front of you. This isn't noticeable unless you're filming at 20x-30x zoom and you're around people talking. There's no external mic port. Overall though, I'm happy with it.

Great video, been debating which to buy since I've heard EXCELLENT things about the SX280 and the SX700 (about £50 price difference) but I think I will go with the SX700 :) Also in your description you mistakenly call the SX700 the 'predecessor' when it should be called the 'successor' :D

I have to agree with some comments on here asking why you didn't do a picture comparison? Surely most people buy this type of camera for photos rather than video, although I appreciate that video may be your priority. Perhaps you would be so kind as to do some photo comparisons, talk about those in a video, and post a link to some photos you've uploaded to Flickr or something? Still, nice video, keep it up!

Very good information but I wish you would've shown pictures and video in low light areas,so many of these videos talk a good game but most won't touch on how good the camera does in low light,in my opinion that's a pretty significant point,I don't quite understand it...

A great review/comparison. Thanks. A question: you can record about 30 minutes of video with the SX700 at 1080p (60fps) before you start to run out of battery? If I record video at 1080p (30fps), does that extend battery life to any great extent?

That will help extend the battery life. It won't be 1 for 1, but you'll likely get a few extra minutes.

Question about the Canon SX 700....why by chance is the LED screen grainy? When I try to take a video in low light I find that the screen seems very grainy...how can I set it up where maybe this does not occur...what measures do I take to prevent this?

I have the Canon SX260HS camera, which I just got last year in April, 2013. I'm having thoughts of upgrading to a newer camera. One of the problems I encountered with the camera, is the concert performances I have attended. Because the speakers in the auditorium were loud, the camera didn't pick up the music. Just a lot of loud, distorted noise. It seems the built-in microphone in the camera wasn't strong enough to pick up the Extra loud sound. Even outside, the sound was distorted by the band's speakers. Unless you're a good distance away, it might pickup on the music. I was wondering if there is anyway, that the company could add a Volume Control Button to lower the volume should the bands be to loud and prevent any distortion in video recording sound?? Does the SX700 HS have an improvement in built-in microphones to with stand loud concert music???

About what you would expect for a point-and-shoot. Compared to a DSLR though, it won't hold a candle. You can, however, hold the lens open for 30 seconds with a tripod and get some admirable night shots.

Do you think the SX700 is worth the extra $150? I think I would like the better zoom capability as well as the better battery life, but unsure if that's worth an extra $150. Also, Do they both use the same battery type?

Sorry for the late reply. They use a slightly different battery. The SX280 uses an NB-6L, and the SX700 uses an NB-6Lh that holds a slightly higher amperage. I do know that the SX700 battery will not work in the SX280, but since I no longer have the SX280 I cannot tell if its batteries would work in the SX700. Is it worth it? It was for me. I record a lot of video, so the battery life in video mode was important to me, and the 30x zoom is an added plus. The SX280 would be fine if a majority of what you do is picture taking, however. I think given a few extra months, you should see the price drop some on the SX700.

Take them to a club and photograph people dancing in the dark. Go to a playground and photograph children in their moments. Go to a sports game and photograph the action shots. Everyone has a smartphone that handles low demand scenarios. P&S cameras have to up their game if they want to remain relevant.
