For those who come looking for lens reviews, this is a list to help you differentiate the acronyms between the brands:Sigma - OS (Optical Stabilization)Canon - IS (Image Stabilization)Tamron - VC (Vibration Compensation)Nikon - VR (Vibration Reduction)It does get jumbled at first, seeing as how there are so many acronyms for these brands, but you'll get accustomed to it.

the telescoping on the cannon i think is due to the fact that the lens hood attaches to the non extending part of the body and gives shading throughout the zoom range but I could be wrong

12:50 The Tamron is indeed weather resistant. I've used it myself, outside, filming for several hours in sleet and drizzle. The lens was soaking wet. I had no issues. What a fantastic piece of work.

What you are seeing there with the star flares is the number of aperture blades. Flares from the starburst are matched to the number of aperture blades because it's based on the corners from blade to blade. When the number is odd, the star flares are asymmetrical, so you see lots of flares. When the number of blades is even, the aperture corners are symmetrical, so they double up on each other and you see half as many and each flare is double the brightness.

*about the Canon zoom; it does loosen up with use. I have a 24-70 with a decent amount of use and it's much more loose. THE REASON for the backwards zoom on the canon (extended at 24mm and compact at 70mm) is to allow for a lens hood that attaches to the frame of the camera instead of the extended part of the lens. that way if the lens hood gets hit, the impact is absorbed by the steel frame instead of by the moving parts of the lens. i think the design is genius.

The Canon extends as you zoom out because it's coordinated with the hood which is fixed in place. So when you're zoomed out wide to 24mm the lens is extended so it only uses a minimum length of the hood so the edges don't vignette. When you zoom in tele to 70mm the lens is not extended so it uses the maximum length of the hood to minimize flare. That's a very clever design that the other manufacturer's haven't copied.

Its called a "Follow Focus". Yes it is what it is used for. It allows the camera operator fluid, smooth movement when focusing and you can also get one for zooming, on a capable lens.

not sure if this was already mentioned but the canon reverse-zooms to maximize the effectiveness of the lens hood, which on the canon 24 70 does not with when the lens is zooming in and out. it, imo, is an ingenious design.

@unamaxify

the inverted zoom of the canon has the advantage that the lens-hood will work better at shielding from the sun (at 70mm the lens sits deep inside the hood which is optimal, at 24 the lens is very close to the edge of the hood so it won't cause vignetting). Compared to the lens-hood on the tamron or the sigma which wont work from 35 to 70mm, the inverted zoom is a big plus for contrast & preventing flare.

if you really want image stabilization, i would go with the canon 24-105. the image quality is almost on par with the 24-70 but with a much lower price, better zoom range, and image stabilization. i just bought a 24-105 to relieve my 24-70 of cheeper or more dangerous gigs and so far i love it. thanks for the comparison. you make a clear distinction between the lenses. great review!

I have the Tamron VC, and I'll keep it until Canon decide to produce an IS version of a fast standard zoom (not the F4 BS.)... or maybe if Sigma decide to give us an Art fast zoom lens with OS that gives Canon a run for their money. The Tamron is adequate. It's kind of soft wide open. But I am okay with it.

I have the Canon 24-70 2.8 version 1. I paid only $1200 for it a year ago. It is super sharp and built like a tank. I didn't care for the inverted zoom at first, but as stated by others that makes the hood work correctly at all zoom settings, which to me is a small plus.

Also, on the 17-50mm (DX), it's shortest at it's 17mm, which is where most of the handheld, walkaround videos get shot. You should really give the 24-105mm a try as well, for the Canon, it's a nice, often used L lens with IS, albeit 2 stop IS, but the good thing is it can be found very cheap since it's being sold as a kit with many 5d bodies.

I shoot both, and have found that the requirements for video lenses are evolving away from those typically important to photographers shooting stills. I shoot both, and find that while a 2.5x zoom range is perfectly adequate for shooting stills, it's much less than what I would *like* to have when shooting video - particularly when I'm shooting off a stand/tripod.

you said that it's weird that the front tube from the canon lens is comming out at the lowest focal length! But it's nice in combination with the mount of the lens hood... with this system you have a better effect of the lens hood at the higher focal length! :)

Hi, thank you for the review. Although I disagree on some points, I must say this is a great review. From a photographer's perspective I think Canon lens performs better overall. However, right now I need to purchase a lens for a video project, and Canon is out of reach. Do you think that Tamrom lens at full HD resolution (1920px widthx1080) is up to par with Canon, because all those differences seems to be visible at full resolution only (5616 px). Thank you.

Preordered the Tamron 24-70VC and have no regrets. Significantly better than the 24-70L mk1. The VC is awesome for video AND photography. I love shooting stills at 1/20 with full confidence. It allows me to absorb as much light as possible to get the lowest ISO and stopped down when possible (TV mode ISO auto). That translates to higher quality shots. For fast action shots, it's neck and neck with the 24-70L mk 1 except my copy of the tamron was noticeably sharper at all focal lengths.

Handheld tips: Avoid caffine. If you are left handed, brace your left elbow on your belt and squeeze both arms against your sides. Tuck your chin to touch your hand(s). This allows limited Left-to-Right movement but stablizes your shot by 50%.

I have the Sigma 24-70 2.8 and I use it a fair bit in low light and full sun light and have never found any problems with my images. I shoot sunrises when its not winter because I hate the cold and use it as my every day lens. I only ever use f2.8, f5.6, f11, f18 and f22. In all honesty, if you buy any of these lenses you won't be disappointing if you aren't earning money from them.

The canon's design on having the wide end being extended is actually a clever bit of design. When the lens hood is attached, it gives better shading to the lens. (you will notice how when you zoom in, more area for shading is produced) a bit hard to explain lol but yeah. that's why it's made that way.

"I am impressed Sigma won at f/22" I would not expect a comment like that about f/2.8 glass. It's almost like saying that Canon L lens has better surfaces for hummering nails. It maybe true, but it is definitely far from the main purpose of the lens.
@sergeichumakov9101
@sergeichumakov9101 9 жыл бұрын
f/22 has its purpose. But then again, for the performance boost that the L-lens show everywhere (except maybe f/22) I'm willing to use them instead of Sigma.
@TheVitalishe
@TheVitalishe 9 жыл бұрын
How often do you use your lenses at or around f/22? One typically uses small apertures for landscape shots with something relatively close in focus (like flowers). As a reference, at a typical landscape focal distance of 24mm and the optimal sharpness aperture of f/8 hyperfocal distance is 2.4m. Focusing just past it, at 2.5m everything will be in focus from 1.3m to infinity. Similar numbers for 24mm and f/11 are 1.7m for hyperfocal and 0.9m-infty. So what is the point of using f/22? To introduce visible diffraction? So it is my firm belief that the fact Sigma is sharper at f/22 is irrelevant just like the fact that it may taste better and have fewer calories ;-)
@TheVitalishe
@TheVitalishe 9 жыл бұрын
As an additional argument against performance at f/22 is the fact that many fast primes simply don't go past f/16.

I currently shoot with 7D and 70D and have three L lenses plus 50mm f/1.4, 10-22 and 17-55 f/2.8 IS. I've used the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 as well and I found that although it was decently sharp, it was quite a bit softer at f/2.8 than the Canon. But what was most noticeable for me was the AI of the autofocus. It just could not keep up with any other lens in my bag, constantly hunting, losing focus, missing focus. I'd put that high on the priority list. But good overall discussion.
