I've been using a XA30 for the last six months and love it. I use a Rode NTG4+ shotgun mic and a Lume Cube light and this is my main camera kit. I have just purchased a Benro Aero 4 tripod and also us a Benro Move Over 4 slider. The XA 30 is awesome and I film a lot, just about everyday and very happy about it. The only problems I found are that sometime while filming I need to tweak the audio levels, while the dials move easy when you just want to tweak it a little they sometimes they go too far...not sure what the fix would be. Possible I just need to work on it. The other problem is on the other side of the handle - Some XLR cables once you connect em...are just about impossible to get out. I have used the same cables on my Zoom H6 (no problems) so it seems to be something with the handle. Also where do buy short XLR Cables, Canon make the camera and including the handle which they tell you that you can install a shotgun mic on - but where do get the cables? I had to make mine (45cm long for those playing at home.) Nice review, the XA20 wasn't an option when I was looking..I had the choice between the 30 and the 35...not sure what the difference was apart from few hundred dollars which was a few hundred dollars I didn't have on the day. So I walked out with the XA30 and I'm still very happy about my choice.

short XLR cables can be purchased at Music stores, Amazon, or video retailers like B&H Photo and Adorama.

What applications are you using this camera for? I was considering buying a new camera for interviews, lectures and science communications projects. My day job is in TV and it has been years since I have ventured out into other video work beyond my day job. Where I have truly high end gear to work with, but not on my dime.

I came to the same conclusion about Wide DR mode on the HF-G40. I was looking to upgrade my HF-G10 last Autumn and wanted to see whether the Wide DR and Highlight Priority modes justified the added expense of going for an HF-G40 or settling for an HF-G30. So I shot some matched samples on the HF-G40 in a camera showroom. Examining them at home, all of the Wide DR shots showed increased noise levels in the shadows and a definite loss in detail compared to the Normal and Highlight Priority modes. As it turned out, a deal came up on an unused HF-G30 that was too good to pass-up. What I wish I'd had opportunity to properly check out on the HF-G40 though was Auto White Balance; the camera store showroom had strong daylight balanced lighting and, for some strange reason, they wouldn't let me take the HF-G40 to test outside. I've become increasingly frustrated with the way AWB behaves on the HF-G30. AWB on the HF-G10 was, in my experience, very good - quick to adapt to changed lighting conditions and in mixed lighting usually arriving at an good compromise. I rarely had to manually white balance off a card to get acceptable result, which is what you want for run-and-gun and events work. AWB on the HF-G30 takes much longer (often 10 secs or so) to fully adapt to changed lighting conditions. So there is a tendency for blue casts to linger on white subjects when moving from full sunlight to shade outdoors and likewise when shooting window lit interiors, especially on overcast days. Yes, the Color Temp (K) setting option is useful when you have time to make fine adjustments, but often you don't. And correcting shifting color casts in post does not always achieve the desired results. The HF-G30 otherwise perfectly meets my needs but this AWB behavior has me at the point where I'm thinking about jumping ship and going for a Sony CX900. The only thing that could change that is if, by some miracle, Canon addressed this issue and improved AWB performance on the HF-G40. Which leads me to the reason for posting here, since the XA30 and HF-G40 are essentially the same beast under the boot. How do you find AWB performance on the XA30 as compared to the XA20 under the type of shooting scenarios I described ? Cheers.

I took the opportunity to do a hands-on comparison of AWB on an HF-G40 vs my HF-G30, both Vixia models. Dynamic range is definitely improved on the HF-G40 and there is more of a magenta tinge to the colour tone. But the AWB behaviour is basically no different to the HF-G30. Very disappointing and I can't imagine it's any different on the XA30/35. WB/AWB is a mature technology and surely this could be addressed and resolved with a firmware update.

Hi would this be suitable for a live feed from a stage - I notice it doesn't come with a shoulder rig - can you recommend a good used model that could be tested on a shoulder. I'm researching what to buy used and no nothing about this type of camera. I basically need a camcorder that has a full hdmi out a zoom and AF that can be used on a shoulder.
@VideoGizmology6 жыл бұрын
You can buy a shoulder rig and mount any camera with an HDMI out to it, including the Canon XA30. If you don't have a rig and need a camcorder that can mount on your shoulder, you do not have a lot of options in a low price range. The only model I can think of is the Sony HXR-MC2500.

What about a difference in a XA10 and XA30? I have a XA10 now but looking to get an XA30 also.
@VideoGizmology7 жыл бұрын
The XA30 is a big jump up from the XA10. You will notice a difference in almost all areas from image quality to improved features across the board. I would argue that the XA30 isn't that much better than the XA20, but both of those models are wonderful improvements to the XA10. I made a video where I compare the XA10 to the XA20 on my other channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bH_HlX99jKh8jsk

I'm looking to purchase the Canon XA35... Canon just announced the XA15... Annoying cause its a lower number sooooo, I don't understand... There seems to be NO IMPROVEMENTS... I've researched as many specs as possible.... Perhaps they improved the WIDE DR problem you talked about.... Have you heard any news???

I have not heard any news about the XA15. Seems like it came out of nowhere and I don't know what Canon is thinking here. I wouldn't get it. Nothing about it seems like an upgrade from the XA30/35. I just tested the Canon GX10. Impression video coming soon.

The XA30 has HDMI only. The XA35 Has HDMI, SDI and the XA15 has HDMI, SDI and Composite Out puts... Its a lower number cause its not a step up just an added feature...

I 'm pretty sure that is not the case.

Is anyone else having an issue with the Cannon Xa30 giving a "task in progress" error? I am unable to turn it on for more than a second unless I switch it to media. In camera mode it shows the view for a split second and then black screen with "task in progress. Do not disconnect the power source." It never ends this "progress." I searched this online and found nothing advising what I can do myself. I did find a Canon forum where someone said: "If this occurs when the camcorder turns off when it's powered by its Compact Power Adapter CA-110, the camcorder will require service to correct this issue." but mine was not using the Compact power adapter at the time. Neither was the person asking for help, and no one ever replied to them either. :/ I would love to find out that there is a quick fix and who else has had this issue. :) thx

Hey Kristin - I have never had that problem with my XA 30 camera and I've used it for over 2 years now. Sounds like there is a software problem. So I would think you should contact Canon and see if they can help you. I really like my camera and use it lot!!!!
