Canon XA40: Pro Audio Top Handle Settings Explained

The Canon XA series (XA40, XA50, XA45, XA55, etc al) comes with a detachable top handle which contains 2 XLR inputs as well as physical settings knobs on the reverse side. In this video, I explain how to use the very settings to make sure that you're capturing audio from the right source(s) and avoid capturing accidental one sided audio.

Great video Daniel, I find the “in-camera” preamps to be fairly good. It is trying to adjust the on the fly , difficult due to the position of the dials at the back of the left side of the camera. I have purchased a Zoom H1N and mounted it on top of camera but even being so small it is bulky in that position.

Same! I also actually have a Zoon H1N but to be honest I have never used it in this manner (yet) although you'll probably end up with better audio. I love the form factor of the XA40 and that everything is ready to go. Sound guys will tell you that recording direct-to-camera is heresy but at my (fairly basic) level of production I find it more than good enough to get the job done.

Great video…….what happens with the audio when the speaker maybe 10-15 metres away, do you employ some type of Bluetooth microphone?

I use a wireless XLR system with the receiver placed into the XLR jack.

@@DanielSRosehill -Wow…..that was an amazing response, I researched what you said and for example and I came up with RODELink TX-XLR system. So what happens if your videoing the groom at a wedding reception giving his speech and he’s already got a microphone that’s feeding into the PA. Do you set up a wireless lapel microphone on the groom…..I guess. Thank you for your time.

No problem at all. If the groom's mic is going into a mixer ask the sound engineer to give you an output off the mixer and set that input to line. Otherwise yes of course you could just rig up your own mic. Don't forget there's a 3.5mm input too so you really have all options. Those wireless systems (eg Wireless Go by Rode) tend to be cheaper as XLR tends to be more for professional uses.

Does the handle ever die? Or is it connected to the camera? Or how do you charge the handle

No. Its connected to the main body through a hot shoe mounting and is supplied with electricity. So its controls will operate for as long as the camera has battery.
